I am new to Linux, I have Ubuntu, Is there an addin that can be used to locate wireless networks? And configure them?

Basically I've attempted to find the networks which I know are there and I continue to recieve the message

~$ iwconfig

eth0 no wireless extensions.

pan0 no wireless extensions.

iwlist scan

lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

Thanks, I am still trying to figure out everything with this system....I converted my HP Pavilion over about a week ago. any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
can you paste the results here ?

here's what i got

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

in addition to the wireless not working i only have one of three usb ports working. i am trying to learn more about how these things function and whatnot, so that when i do encounter problems like this i know what is wrong and how to fix them. i'm definitely a noob though.

ps sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this i've been pretty busy, thanks
