Ok... im trying to install xmms-1.2.10, the mp3 player...yeh so, i get to the ./configure stage and i get "checking for gawk... no"

so i try to install "gawk-3.1.5" and i get "checking for bison... no" and "checking for byacc... no", so i try to install bison-2.3 and guess what i get......"checking for gawk... no", im so stumped, man i soo want to learn how to use linux, i dont want to run the risk of being called a n00b, but i do admit that i thought i knew alot about computers, give me xp or vista anyday, but once i saw how much better linux is "supposed" to be, i wanted to change, so please please help!! And if or when aomebody does reply please dont tell me to do domething that im not going to know how to do :)

what linux distro are you using (ubuntu/redhat/fedora???) and what version is it ?

i read that ubuntu 7.10 has a gui for installing progs??? is this true and ifso how do i upgrade to that, do i have to downnload the whole os again or what??

ubuntu 7.04 has it also,

the program you need to use in ubuntu for installing applications is called 'package manager' , so if you don't like using the cli (command line interface, or terminal) then you can click on 'Applications, add/remove' to start the package manger gui.

it'll give you lots of ideas of how to do stuff in Ubuntu 7.04

OK, alls going well, im starting to get the hang of this bash stuff...

i have just installed the amd/ati graphics driver for my card (Radeon 9600 pro)

and the amdcccle program is working fine but i cant get the resolution to go higher then 1024x768,

what do i have to edit or download to accomplish this?
