Can't startx in FC3 - Seyfert - 2005-04-15

So currently I'm really fed up with all this linux thing, every time I try a distro... it's either this problem or my bad luck...

Presently I'm with Fedora Core 3 and Mr X doesn't want serve his humble master and I even tried to play hide and seek with his xorgconfig, as people told me to do, although resistance was futile.

If someone wants to help a lonely human, please do so.

Thanks! :)

what hardware do you have ? we need to know in order to advise

to configure X in fedora core release 3 you need to type the following as root

Code:
[root@localhost ~]# system-config-display

cheers

I did that and of course, as always, and as much as life can give, it didn't work...

"Hardware state" not defined, or something, did this hidden agony utter in this miserable life!

Hardware? Oh, that thing that rapes wives and kills flesh? Oh yes, although my mind wouldn't bear this much gnostic irony and couldn't possibly emit this stark destruction audibly, this is what my device manager whispered to me:

Maxtor 2F040j0 (hard disk)

SiS 300/305/630/540/730 (display adapter)

Intel Celeron CPU 1.70 GHz (processor)

Now I think that destiny wants only those little important imps right?

Well if god would want a glass of wine just give me a holler! [img]<___base_url___>/uploads/emoticons/default_laugh.png[/img]

Quote:SiS 300/305/630/540/730 (display adapter)

"hardware state not defined" means:

welcome to an adapter that fedora core 1+2+3 cannot autodetect. [img]<___base_url___>/uploads/emoticons/default_rolleyes.gif[/img]

maybe an upgrade to 4? maybe try a manual method?

try as root walking through the setup:

Code:
setup

select x configuration, and in there you should find a sis300 option.

you could also try a manual config of the /etc/xorg.conf. "man sis" for info on the look of the sis card setup for that
