  1. That yum cmd is magic, I don't bother looking for an rpm or tar file with that!!!
  2. http://www.channelchooser.com/ I have gone to manual install but I can't find what I need (running FC5). Is there a quick yum cmd to install the necessary program / plugin? Chhers
  3. Its a zebra 105s. At the time this was out, it was running on a windows 98 / 95 system, that's how old it is but it is a very commercial machine (it's a label printer). I have found some label software that has the driver for this and run it under wine, but out of the 3 programs that would work (the other 2 wouldn't, kept crashing) it couldn't find the printer. So this was xp drives for a xp machine an I was running it under wine asking it to find ports on a linux machine, no wonder it didn't work I was thinking of maybe running this printer on a xp machine, sharing it across the network and connecting this laptop to it to print? but someone told me that it wouldn't work as I need the drives on my laptop to be able to print? I would REALLY like to get this printer to work off linux, but i'm not sure if its possible Any help would be greatfully appreciated!!
  4. I'm not sure if this is possible, but its my last solution. I have a very old printer that I want to run on linux (FC5) if it is possible that is. This run's fine on XP, but unfortuneately, I just can't find any linux drivers for this. I've read a bit about wine (don't still fully understand it, but getting there ) and it sort of runs xp inside linux right? Well if that's so, is it possible to run xp inside linix to run this printer? If not, any possible solution around it? Thanks
  5. Right, after A LOT of messing and figuring about (which has also taught me some neat tricks!) I have finally got gDesklets on my lappy and I officially now have a 'Cool Desktop' :D I firstly upgraded to FC5 (so lush! What was I ever doing with FC4?!) and tried the above again, but it didn't work. After a bit of dabbling, I got it to work. I'll past what I did here so others can learn. As root I just did: yum install gDesklets ..and that installed it! I was shocked, after the days of messing about that I had It needed a python compiler, but with that yum code, it also installed the needed one + the application. Then to run lil desklets on your computer, you simply have to visit the gDesklets website, drag & drop the download link into the gDesklets shell (the program) and its done! I'm still having lots of fun just adding desklets and playing with it lots! When i've decided what i'm keeping, i'll post ya a screenie of it Happy Bunny at las :D
  6. upgrade to FC5 .. and try Will try that and let ya know how I get one! cheers
  7. The search worked! (the other's didn't) search results.. pyorbit.i386 2.0.1-4 base Matched from: pyorbit pyorbit is an extension module for python that gives you access to the ORBit2 CORBA ORB. pyorbit-devel.i386 2.0.1-4 base Matched from: pyorbit-devel This package contains files required to build wrappers for ORBit2 addon libraries so that they interoperate with pyorbit pyorbit.i386 2.0.1-4 installed Matched from: pyorbit pyorbit is an extension module for python that gives you access to the ORBit2 CORBA ORB. So I yummed all the top 2. It installed one and wouldn't install the other The one that didn't install was pyorbit-devel.i386 yum install pyorbit-devel.i386 Setting up Install Process Setting up repositories updates-released 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00 extras 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 base 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 Reading repository metadata in from local files primary.xml.gz 100% |=========================| 346 kB 00:03 updates-re: ################################################## 1006/1006 Added 443 new packages, deleted 654 old in 14.88 seconds Parsing package install arguments Nothing to do So I did yum search pyorbit again and this give me: yum search pyorbitSearching Packages: Setting up repositories updates-released 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00 extras 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 base 100% |=========================| 2.7 kB 00:00 //var/cache/yum/base/repomd.xml:50: parser error : Opening and ending tag mismat ch: img line 48 and div </div> ^ //var/cache/yum/base/repomd.xml:51: parser error : Opening and ending tag mismat ch: img line 45 and div </div> ^ //var/cache/yum/base/repomd.xml:73: parser error : Entity 'nbsp' not defined <div id="border"> </div> ^ //var/cache/yum/base/repomd.xml:79: parser error : Entity 'copy' not defined <span class="text">Copyright
  8. That installed it (thanks ) but the same thing is still coming up It did install successfully (pkconfig) and I even re-booted the machine before running ./config again, but the same again... checking for /usr/include/python2.4/Python.h... yes checking for pkg-config... /usr/bin/pkg-config checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... yes checking for GDESKLETS... configure: error: Package requirements (pygtk-2.0 >= 2.4.0 pyorbit-2 >= 2.0.1 gnome-python-2.0 >= 2.6.0) were not met. Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively you may set the GDESKLETS_CFLAGS and GDESKLETS_LIBS environment variables to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details. This laptop and tar files don't seem to agree for some reason :S Is there anyway of making a .tar file into a rpm? It likes them a lot! lol
  9. That worked (yay ) but then it said that I needed another compiler?! checking for GDESKLETS... configure: error: The pkg-config script could not be found or is too old. Make sure it is in your PATH or set the PKG_CONFIG environment variable to the full path to pkg-config. Alternatively you may set the GDESKLETS_CFLAGS and GDESKLETS_LIBS environment variables to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details. To get pkg-config, see <http://www.freedesktop.org/software/pkgconfig>. See `config.log' for more details. I followed the link, it don't take me anywhere where I can download it So I tried this on the offchance that it would work.. yum install pkg-config-dev which give me the following; yum install pkg-config-dev Setting up Install Process Setting up repositories updates-released 100% |=========================| 951 B 00:00 extras 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 base 100% |=========================| 1.1 kB 00:00 Reading repository metadata in from local files primary.xml.gz 100% |=========================| 431 kB 00:02 updates-re: ################################################## 1151/1151 Added 11 new packages, deleted 75 old in 6.46 seconds Parsing package install arguments No Match for argument: pkg-config-dev Nothing to do Which i'm guessing didn't install or update? maybe i've got the code wrong, I just guessed that it would be that. Any idea's? Sorry to be a pita but I'm determined to get a cool desktop
  10. Cheers for that I've decided to stick with gdesklets as it looks to do the job that I want and looks fairly simple As I had trouble installing the tar file, I searched for an rpm and downloaded one from this website (I downloaded the "1386" one) - Installed that, but when I've added candy bar or clocks to it, its quite buggy and comes up with errors, so ditch that I thought. So I went back to the homepage to download their latest one which is: http://gdesklets.org/?mod=downloads/gdesklets (which is a tar file). Downloaded that and i've done: - Signed in as root - tar -xjf gDesklets-0.35.3.tar.bz2 - Cd'ed to gDesklets directory - ./configure && make && checkinstall Then it comes back with... checking /usr/include/python2.4/Python.h usability... no checking /usr/include/python2.4/Python.h presence... no checking for /usr/include/python2.4/Python.h... no configure: error: Can't find Python.h! You will need the python development package to successfully compile gDesklets. Is there a yum command to install that? I've looked for an rpm of it on google and there's loads not sure which package it is that I need to install to make this work..
  11. I'd be happy if I can create a desktop like this.. http://antares.escomposlinux.org/images/Ca...s/Captura14.jpg I love the menu bar on that one I have looked for gdesklets, then I've looked for an rpm in that and installed that. It has installed (wahoo!) but it doesn't seem to do anything. I think I need other packages with it or something? This is a screen shot of what I have got... Any idea's? *Really wants a coool desktop now *
  12. Tried that, didn't work couldn't find the mirrors all the time. I downloaded it from there, but it doesn't want to work on my FC4 After I've extracted it (tar -xvzf ksmoothdock-3.6.1.tar.gz) and done ./configure, it just keeps saying: ...... ... checking for crt_externs.h... no checking for _NSGetEnviron... no checking for vsnprintf... yes checking for snprintf... yes checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X includes. Please check your installation and add the correct paths! Any idea's for an alternate solution? unless the above can be fixed?
  13. What a great forum you guys have got here I've not been using linux that long and I'm very impressed with my own progress, all thanks to this forum, and also many thanks to znx & anyweb who have helped me out a lot! I rarely have to post as just with searching it gives me most of my answers to my questions Keep up the good work!
  14. Hi, I have seen a few screen shots of linux and some have got like a really fancy menu bar which enlarges as you pass your mouse over it, it looks a bit like apple mac os's actually. Which linux is this? I'm currently using FC4 and can't seem to find any options to have a cool menu bar Thanks!!
  15. Stupid question.. I'm interested in running wine on my laptop whichis currently running FC4. So which RPM do I download? There's only 1, 2 & 3 there and I'm running FC4
  16. BINGO!! Finally worked! YAY! I'm so pleased! Your a genius!!! :D:D I used the bottom code as I want them in number order. THANKS AGAIN, your a star!!! Made my head spin a bit, I got there in the end tho
  17. I have done a search, but I can't find what I want. I want to install thunderbird on FC4 and I have downloaded the linux version from: http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.h...ux〈=en-US I can't find a rpm for this and have to install the .tar.gz version. The normal way that I go about to install a program is: * cd /home/mizzy * tar -xvzf thunderbird-1.5.0.2.tar.gz * cd thunderbird * ./configure && make && checkinstall But the ./configure step doesn't work because I don't think that there is a configure file in there bash: ./configure: No such file or directory I have gone to the read me file, but it directs me to their webpage which I can't find help for linux installtions All I can seem to do, is extract it, but not install it. Any idea's guys?
  18. Oh, my apologise's for not making myself clear... Its images files and they are named as : dscf0264.jpg, dscf0265.jpg, dscf0266.jpg etc But if I can, I want to re-number them to a date and chosen file name, then order them in number order. So like I want the final result to look like: 07052006_whatever_001.jpg, 07052006_whatever_002.jpg, 07052006_whatever_003. jpg etc
  19. Thanks for that, I did run that in the bin folder and I've have got a lil bit further but... After all the above is done and I unlock the de-renamer file, I then CD to my folder that has my images and type: de-renamer funkyevent and I get back: ls: [0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]: No such file or directory There are about 20 images in there, and they even show up when I type ls in terminal. Any idea's?
  20. Right this is what I've done, can you tell me where I've gone wrong? Everytime I try it I just get permission denied Terminal > mkdir ~/bin Opened up Text Editor and copied & pasted the code above exactly > saved that as > ~/bin/de-renamer Then I have opened up terminal again and cd'ed to my image folder and typed : de-renamer funkyevent and all I get back is: permission denied. I have tried copying my images to the bin directory too to and run this script again in terminal, but the I got persmission denied back again Where have I gone wrong?
  21. Yes it is!!!! Gee thank you!!! Now just give me a few hours to work out how to do that
  22. Blonde user! figured it now. To all other users, the steps that I mentioned above, they did work for me I just erm, well, rather not say! They do work!!!
  23. I have a shared folder on my desktop (which is on windows) that i want to view on here. It has been done previously on this laptop when it was running windows and it ran successfully. On here I have gone to network > windows network > and that is blank So then I have go to Connect to server > entered the service type as windows share desktop ip which was 192.168.0.3 and I put the shared file name. This did find it and make a connection, but the folder appears as empty on here. It contains a few images in it and it shows up on my desktop. Any idea's why its hiding the images? well everything (running FC4)
