  1. just a related issue :- I am unable to use the package manager without the internet connection. It won't just start. I wish to use it only with my fedora dvd. What is the way to set this preference ? I only see the repositories option under Edit in the package manager. If I remove all the other repo's and just leave the install media option checked then would that do what I want ? Are there any other way to achieve updation of packages from just the dvd or just from the internet ? where to set the preferences from nishith
  2. yeah you are right I think it needed a x server restart and ctrl+alt+backspace could have solved the problem. Thanks a lot nishith

  6. well that was a problem with my sound driver OSS not being supported by gstreamer. I got to know that from the OSS forum and have updated a library in the gstreamer dir and it is working since then. (the lib file is libgstossaudio.so) thanks again nishith

  8. Yeah I think yum would have been better. Any way I am using GNOME and the rpm downloaded and used was inside OOo_2.4.0-LinuxIntel_install_wjRE_en-US.tar.gz. The tar file was unziped and then I used rpm -ivh *.rpm. It reported all was fine thanks in advance nishith
  9. I have installed vlc using the yum installer. I got a acer laptop which has OSS installed. ALSA didnot work due to issues with ICH8 chipset. Anyway, xmms plays audio alright , but when I start vlc and play the same file, it seems to play it but I donot get to hear anything ! Any idea how to tell vlc to use OSS? thanks nishith
  10. I am using fedora 8 on a acer laptop. I have installed openoffice from a rpm file. I also got a rpm for desktop integration. Everything installed without any complaining.....but I can't see any links for the openoffice on the applications menu. I can start impress, writer etc from /opt/openoffice-2.0/programs dir but not otherwise. Can I get the desktop integration done ! thanks in advance nishith
  11. I have installed gstreamer on my acer 4720 laptop which is running fedora8. But I see the volume control applet with a red cross and on clicking it says : The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured. You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu. I have both alsa and oss installed on my system. Alsa didnot work with my ICH8 s
