  3. Thanks Randall for reminding me to do this Please note this is for the 32 bit installs, if you find this article useful, then I'd appreciate if you'd digg it ! As root (su -) install the current livna rpm to get access to livna's goodies # rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-7.rpm Now let's add freshrpm's to that list: # [rpm -ivh http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/7/i386/RPMS.freshrpms/freshrpms-release-1.1-1.fc.noarch.rpm OK done. Now lets have some fun: Let's install the MP3 plug-ins (currently gstreamer-plugins-mp3 is BAD so will error, but try again in a day or two): # yum -y install xmms-mp3 gstreamer-plugins-mp3 libmad libid3tag Let's install the Flash plug-in. Use vi (or any other editor) to create a new file as root: # vi /etc/yum.repos.d/flash.repo Now copy the text below and paste it into the new file (press i to INSERT text...): [macromedia] name=Macromedia for i386 Linux baseurl=http://macromedia.mplug.org/rpm/ enabled=1 gpgcheck=1 gpgkey=http://macromedia.mplug.org/FEDORA-GPG-KEY Save the file with :wq # yum -y install flash-plugin Next up for multimedia action and DVD playing we will install xine: # yum -y install xine xine-lib xine-skins A Fedora install would not be complete without the coolest video player mplayer, so let's install it # yum -y --disablerepo=livna install mplayer mplayer-skins mplayer-fonts And now we'll install the windows codecs for mplayer # wget http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/essential-20061022.tar.bz2 # tar -xjvf essential-20061022.tar.bz2 # mkdir /usr/local/lib/win32 # mv essential-20061022/* /usr/local/lib/win32 Now we need to install the mplayer plugin for web browsers: # yum -y install mplayerplug-in Install Java 6.0 Update 1. Get over to Sun's Java download site and choose the Linux RPM in self-extracting file version. Location: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Linux RPM in self-extracting file: https://sdlc5d.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServl...0FBE7FAEB98B511 Open a Terminal. Become root (su -) Change back to your home directory (cd ~username) Where "username" is your normal username. Run the file that you downloaded, by doing: # sh Desktop/jdk-6u1-linux-i586-rpm.bin It will display a license agreement. You can press q to skip it. Type "yes" when it asks you if you agree. Then it will install Java. Finally, you can enable the Java plugin for your web browser: # ln -s /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_01/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ The above was taken from anyweb's pinned post on adding multimedia extras with just a few changes for Fedora 7. Dont forget to diable Livna repos so you dont trash your system by mixing Freshrpm Repos and Livna Repos. They are not compatible trust me I know this one Corkster
  4. Thank you once again for resolving something for me that was a small irritation.
  5. I AGREE !!! This stuff is AWESOME !!! Slackware > * !!!!! Everything works ! All the mplayer, flash, firefox plugins install without a hitch !!!! I have finally found my flava !!!! Its SLACKWARE !!!!!!!
  6. Thankfully there are facilities available which make it a simple job to install Sun's Java as a Debian package. Two packages we're going to need are java-package, and fakeroot. These can be installed simply: apt-get install fakeroot java-package Once the relevent packages have been installed you will need to download the Sun release of the Java package from http://java.sun.com At the time of writing the most current version can be found here: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp Once you agreed to the license presented to you, and have downloaded the file you will have something like jre-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.bin. To turn this into a Debian package you should run: fakeroot make-jpkg jre-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.bin This command will first prompt for confirmation, then : Ask you for your name Ask you for your email address Display a license agreement:Press Space to scroll down, or q to quit. Type "yes" to indicate you agree with the terms. (The name, and email address, you give will be inserted into the Debian package information - and not sent to Sun.) Once these questions have been answered the process will inform you that your package has been built shortly afterwards. The final output you should expect to see will look something like this: The Debian package has been created in the current directory. You can install the package as root (e.g. dpkg -i sun-j2re1.5_1.5.0+update06_i386.deb). As the instructions tell you it is now possible for you to install the package by becoming root and running: dpkg -i sun-j2re1.5_1.5.0+update06_i386.deb One final step might be for you to ensure the Java software works for Mozilla Firefox, or the Mozilla browser. The package you've installed should include a plugin for your browser. At the time of writing the most recent Sun Java version we've been using will install a plugin for you at the following location: /usr/lib/j2re1.5-sun/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so Create a symlink to this directory in your home directory: ln -s /usr/lib/j2re1.5-sun/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/ If you wish to do this for all users on the current system instead run, as root: ln -s /usr/lib/j2re1.5-sun/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ (You might find that the plugin has been automatically installed for all users - so it's worth checking whether you need to complete this last step yourself.)
