in steam i have it configured so that using a controller combination i can change the volume. however, whenever i do so for the first time and after not using that for a while, a popup asks for confirmation
the popup window title is "remote control"
the popup content is
"an application is as asking for special privileges
-remote control"
while it seems there are ways to disable the popup outright system wide, i do not wish to do so because there is probably a good reason it exists. what i would like to do is to make it so that only steam gets special permission and it doesnt ask if steam does it.

p.s.: i am still quite new to linux, so if i asked this in the wrong place, please kindly direct me to the correct one.
i am on Garuda Dr460nized Gaming with the default kde desktop environment that shipped withit

furthermore: i dont freking know if this is the right place. i have tried garudalinux reddit, but it doesnt allow support posts. i tried to sign up to garudalinux forum that it directed me to, but the veryfication email didnt send. i tried to post it on linux4noobs, but the it kept being banned by reddits filters. at this point please i beg you, if you know the answer to this problem, do answer, because i could not for the life of me find a better place to post this.

Currently using Ubuntu 25.1. I'm trying to get it to work on my laptop, but I've had this same issue on an HP desktop and a desktop I built myself. The issue is the same each time, no matter which distro I use and which PC I use:

I boot up, Wi-Fi works great. If I stop interacting with it for 5 minutes or so (like during a network transfer), the system stops recognizing my Wi-Fi and it doesn't work again until I reboot. Then the cycle just continues.

It makes torrenting impossible and I can't use network file transfers because they all take longer than this timeout bug. This happens on Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, and Debian. What am I missing here? How do I fix this?

Good morning fine people of the Linux world.

Please, forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong section. Was not sure where to post.
This is just query. After a bit of searching about, I found a solution to something I was looking to achieve, which was to switch my monitor off by clicking on a shortcut/icon, so that at 3am when Im done watching whatever and Im half asleep, I dont have to reach over and switch the monitor off as one would usually do.

My solution, a fairly simple one. A bash script consisting of the following two lines.

#!/bin/bash
sleep 1 && xset dpms force off

Well my primitive understanding is that bash is a simple programming language, which seems rather overkill simply to run a terminal command from a shortcut. So my question is just about the way in which things are done.......have I reached the typical solution for such a desired result, or are there easier, more basic methods, to run terminal commands on demand/from shortcut, than to use bash

In Win, the typical solution would be a batch file, that is simply a list of commands to be ran.......and whilst my bash script is essentially the same thing, you are STILL having to elicit the use of programming language to do so. I just cant imagine theres not a lower level way of getting such a simple job done?

Hope you dont mind me asking such a dumb question. Thank you

So here is my problem:

I wanted a window manager switcher and found this one: https://github.com/xircon/wm-switcher. So I proceeded to clone it, so I could use it...

... and then I realized that I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with it!

I'm used to windows but I am willing (and wanting) to change. Problem is: I'm always expecting icons. If I needed to run a program I'd double-click it, even python scripts.

By the way, a little introduction:

I've been using windows for over 20 years, can fix the thing even if you try really hard to break it on purpose, I was very frustrated with win10 and a few days ago I finally had enough.

After doing some research I figured that Puppy Linux was ideal for me.

Hello all. I have recently bought a new computer and plan to convert the OS of my old computer to Linux. I am in the capstone for my Bachelor's in IT so I have a pretty good understanding of computers. I may look into earning certificates with RedHat so I am thinking about using CentOS as my distro. My questions are:

1. Is it a good distro for beginners? (Again, I have programming and IT education)

2. Does anyone recommend any step-by-step (video or document) tutorials to completing the switch?

Thanks in advance for the responses.
Since then when i select Debian on Grub, it takes like between 5 - 8 mins to boot up whereas before the partition adjustment it toked like a 4th of that time, and keeps showing lots of errors like:</span>
Please forgive me, I am coming from the windows world and am sure I am using the wrong labels/terminology regarding drives.

I have a Dell laptop with a 1TB NVMe C drive and a 2TB D spin drive. I want to install Linux Mint Cinnamon to the C drive so that I get the greatest amount of speed which means disconnecting the D drive to insure the Linux is loaded to the C drive. Can I later connect the D drive and use that for bulk storage?...like for photos.

Thanks

I've changed strategies. Since the permissions issue was obviously too complex to tackle with my limited ability to explain the problem, I decided to simply use my router's Samba hosting and plug the hard drive in there. SUCCESS! I can access the samba share using smbclient from the command line, and I can access it from Gnome in "Files."

However, when I try to use CIFS to create a permanent mount to the Samba drive using the EXACT. SAME. INFORMATION. it says, "mount error(112): Host is down."

This is the most frustrating thing I've experienced in the world of computing. I just want to share my damn external drive so that I can use Plex/Kodi/etc. to watch my decades of media on my devices in my house. I'm using Ubuntu 18.04. It shouldn't be this complicated. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
