Hi all<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
First of all, let me congrats the admins for a great forum!<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Now for the case...<br />
<br />
When I boot my Ubuntu on my Asus A6000 A6km laptop with a USB device connected (my mouse is USB connected), the OS freezes at "Starting up ...". Ok.. when I disconnect my mouse, the booting is ok, and everything is ready to go. Then I can connect my mouse when the login screen is showing.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Any ideas for what this can be? Is is possible to see what is going on during the boot? I used Mandriva before, and I could see if anything was "OK" or "Failed".<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Thanks<br />

Hi all.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Is there any program/application that emulates or act like the MMC (microsoft management console) on ubuntu 7.04?<br />
<br />
Right now I'm using ubuntu 7.04 and a windows XP on a vmware server because there are a few thing I just cant get rid off. Like Lotus notes 6.5.4 that I cant find the linux version anywhere, HYENA that allows me to connect to my servers running NT ( yes NT) using VNC (this is a nice application because I can connect to any computer on my network remotely because what it does is with your administrator rights it copys the VNC application and configure it), and the MMC to manage the active directory, DNS, DHCP, GPO's and that stuff.<br />
<br />
Do you know of something like mmc for linux?<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Thanks a lot.<br />

 <br />
<br />
Introduction<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="mycode_quote"><cite>Quote:</cite>I've been using linux for years now, I started off with Red Hat 5 and gradually learned more and more about linux, and in particular Fedora. Moving from Red Hat to Fedora was the right thing for me to do at the time, and I stayed with Fedora (FCR6) right up to the moment I started my 30 days with Ubuntu. I've also used a variety of other linux distros over the years including (but not limited to) Suse Linux Entreprise Desktop 10, Suse OSS 10 and Suse 9.3 Professional and I have used Smoothwall for years as my firewalls. <br />
<br />
Ubuntu, however never got much notice from me, sure I sent off for the free Ubuntu CD's and was impressed when a pack of 10 (Ubuntu 5.04) arrived in the post to me (including live CD and install CD in each pack), but truthfully, I never really bothered with Ubuntu as a distro, it just seemed 'too popular' and I was already more than happy with my chosen distro, Fedora so why change ?<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Ubuntu's first release (October 20th, 2004) version 4.10, came at a time when Fedora Core release 2 was already out, and FCR3 was just about to be shipped. Amazingly though, through clever marketing and free (shipit) cd's (and of course 'word of mouth'), Ubuntu quickly became one of the most popular linux distros in no time at all, and the Ubuntu hype never subsided as anyone familiar with Digg/OSnews/Slashdot would know. It seemed to me that more and more linux users (or Windows switchers) were now starting off with (or switching to) Ubuntu, so it was time for me to put it through it's paces (for 30 days to get a real feel for the os) and see what all the fuss was about. Would this distro live up to the hype or not ? In the following six-part article, I hope to answer that question.</blockquote>

At this point, I've realised that pretty much all I need configured is already done, I've got multimedia, cd burning with mp3 capability, remote desktop, ssh, cool gui effects (beryl/avant-dock/gdesklets), so my laptop is performing nicely.<br />

I've not had any fatal errors (kernel panics) and all in all the laptop is now setup really nicely !<br />

When I have installed other linux distros such as Fedora or Suse, the first few days (or weeks) are usually the most intense, setting up the system the way that I want it (I guess the same is true for windows users too, more or less). But once the dust settles (and it does) you end up with a system that's working the way you want, which leads me to think about the marketing hype mentioned at the beginning of this thread.<br />

Ubuntu, is (as far as I'm concerned) perceived by many people to be the answer to their dreams if they are entering the linux world for the first time (eg: windows switchers). Why ? <br />

&lt;leftyfb&gt; drag some .desktop files to your avant bar making them launchers<br />
<br />
&lt;leftyfb&gt; and run gdesklets from the CLI<br />
<br />
&lt;leftyfb&gt; that way it doesn't show up in your taskbar<br />
<br />
&lt;anyweb&gt; ah to stop them jumping up and down on the avant dock ?<br />

&lt;leftyfb&gt; no, thats to notify you of changes to them<br />

&lt;kcharle&gt; Do i gotta install drivers for my keyboard or sumthin? cause i cant click anything and the keyboard wont work, the mouse moves tho<br />
<br />
&lt;leftyfb&gt; or downloads or something<br />
<br />
&lt;leftyfb&gt; but with yours you have your launcher on the left, and more firefox icons on the right that could just be running in the same launcher icon with a little triangle to show that it's an open and running application<br />

This avant dock is cool, I have to admit, but the gdesklets icons keep bouncing up and down and it's getting a bit annoying. I probably have to do something with it to configure this but i'm too tired to think heh <img src="https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.png" alt="Smile" title="Smile" class="smilie smilie_1" /><br />

<span style="font-size: 8pt;" class="mycode_size">Day 6</span><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Hi again folks, well here I am on Day 6 with Ubuntu, and it must be said after reading the news and checking my mail I can safely say that things feel just fine with the distro, I mean, it could have been Fedora, or SLED10 or some other distro, and rather than notice what distro it was I was just doing my usual thing, <span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">and that's a good sign</span>. True, every distro has it's advantages and some have disadvantages but I cannot say that Ubuntu is a bad distro at all. What I do feel is that the <a href="http://www.google.se/search?q=ubuntu+marketing+hype&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;aq=t&amp;rls=com.ubuntu:en-US%3Aofficial&amp;client=firefox-a" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">marketing hype</a> that has propelled it to the masses in a very short period of time is <span style="font-style: italic;" class="mycode_i">a bit overstated</span> and that many users that move to Ubuntu from Windows may be in for a surprise that they were not suspecting. However, those same users would probably also run into similar issues with other popular linux distros.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Anyways, on with the show.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Printing</span><br />
<br />
I've setup printing using the System/administration/printing tool. It wasn't difficult, however no linux driver was listed for my printer (Dell Color Laser 3100cn) so I chose Generic postscript, and that worked fine, but to get it to print over the network I had to configure it as Unix Printer (LPD). <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<img src="http://video.linux-noob.com/screenshots/ubuntu/7.04/post-1-1178565924.png" loading="lazy"  alt="[Image: post-1-1178565924.png]" class="mycode_img" /><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
The printing itself, works fine and is fast so no complaints even with the generic driver.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Networking</span><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
I clicked on Places/Network and I could see a Windows network icon, clicking on that showed me two workgroups, and clicking on one of them showed what computers were in that workgroup. I then logged on to one of them using my Windows XP username/password and that was it, I was able to browse the files easily, so much so that I decided to watch a music video (to test the network speed over wireless connection 11mb/s). Unfortunately Totem came back to haunt me except this time with the following error:-<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
"Totem could not play 'smb://home-0ca963252f/C&#36;/music/lalala.avi'. <a href="http://www.google.se/search?q=totem+There+is+no+input+plugin+to+handle+the+location+of+the+movie.&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;aq=t&amp;rls=com.ubuntu:en-US%3Aofficial&amp;client=firefox-a" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">There is no input plugin to handle the location of the movie</a>.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
So, google seems to be <a href="http://www.google.se/search?q=totem+There+is+no+input+plugin+to+handle+the+location+of+the+movie.&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;aq=t&amp;rls=com.ubuntu:en-US%3Aofficial&amp;client=firefox-a" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">aware of that error</a> and while I look around, I decide to copy the file locally from the networked windows box, to my desktop. That worked nicely and fast, well not lightning speed but good enough.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Once the file was on my desktop, i noticed that gnome showed what the video was (thumbnail) so i double clicked on it and guess what ? Totem <span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">played the file</span> with no problem. I dunno sometimes. <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<img src="http://video.linux-noob.com/screenshots/ubuntu/7.04/post-1-1178567456.png" loading="lazy"  alt="[Image: post-1-1178567456.png]" class="mycode_img" /><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
To double check, I tried another file (this time mpg) and it too failed with the odd error.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />

Hey all...<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right area, but I really need help. I know pretty much nothing about linux and was following my friends instructions for installing ubuntu. Everything was cool until the restart.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
I have partitioned about 30gb to Ubuntu, leaving around 150gb for Windows 2000. When it tries to boot from the hard disk, it comes up with grub error 17 at loading stage 1.5.<br />
<br />

Hey all...<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right area, but I really need help. I know pretty much nothing about linux and was following my friends instructions for installing ubuntu. Everything was cool until the restart.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
I have partitioned about 30gb to Ubuntu, leaving around 150gb for Windows 2000. When it tries to boot from the hard disk, it comes up with grub error 17 at loading stage 1.5.<br />

<span style="font-size: 8pt;" class="mycode_size">Day 1.</span><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Backing up my data, and getting Ubuntu downloaded and installed</span><br />
<br />
I started by first backing up my home directory (/home/anyweb) data in <a href="http://&lt;___base_url___&gt;/index.php?showforum=90" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">FCR6</a> to an external hdd, once done I <a href="http://&lt;___base_url___&gt;/index.php?showtopic=2771" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">scp'd</a> my bookmarks.html (from firefox) via a terminal to my webserver. Next I proceeded to download the Ubuntu iso CD itself, that was easy just head over to <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">Ubuntu's website</a> and decide on the version you want, I chose the Desktop Edition (Ubuntu 7.04 - Supported to 2008) Standard personal computer (x86 architecture, PentiumTM, CeleronTM, AthlonTM, SempronTM).<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
I burned the ISO, labelled the cd and shutdown my FCR6 laptop and removed the hdd for later use. I inserted an old Windows 98 hdd (30gb) and started booting from the Ubuntu cd, I chose the first option which appeared after some moments, which was to '<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Start or Install Ubuntu</span>'. <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
It chugged away for a few minutes and presented me with a Ubuntu desktop, and from there, I chose to 'install to hdd' option which was 7 or so easy steps to go through. <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<img src="http://video.linux-noob.com/screenshots/ubuntu/7.04/post-1-1178097125.png" loading="lazy"  alt="[Image: post-1-1178097125.png]" class="mycode_img" /><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
After about 30 minutes of file copying it said it was done and asked me to restart now, or continue using the live CD. I was ready to continue so I chose to restart. <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Please note that if you had configured Gaim or another application prior to this restart then those changes will need to be done again, as I found out. The first thing that you notice after installing to hdd, is that it boots much faster than from the live cd, and that there are software updates available for download.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<img src="http://video.linux-noob.com/screenshots/ubuntu/7.04/post-1-1178098140.png" loading="lazy"  alt="[Image: post-1-1178098140.png]" class="mycode_img" /><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Wireless issues.</span><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
After the restart I was connected to the internet via a WIRED connection, as the live cd install didn't load firmware for my wireless network card (what a surprise). The wireless network card is a Broadcom ( Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)) which is a pretty standard wireless card. So my first job was to get wireless working, to do that I clicked on '<a href="https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/connect-to-internet.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">system, administration and then 'network'</a>'. I selected to remove the tick from within 'Enable roaming mode' and input the wireless AP's ESSID and WEP key, but still no network connection and ifconfig doesnt even report a wireless device. <br />

 <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
It seems that I have to <a href="http://www.google.se/search?q=ubuntu+Broadcom+Corporation+BCM4306&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;aq=t&amp;rls=com.ubuntu:en-US%3Aofficial&amp;client=firefox-a" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">start googling</a> (or check Ubuntu's <a href="https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessTroubleShootingGuide" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">wireless troubleshooter</a> docs) to find the solution to this problem, and no doubt it'll be ndiswrapper to the rescue, strange though as I was under the impression that Ubuntu was designed to stop linux noobs from having to go through this type of hassle.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Configuring Ndiswrapper</span><br />
<br />
As I'm new to Ubuntu (but not new to linux), It seems that I have to first enable the <a href="https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Packages?action=show&amp;redirect=UniversePackages" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">universe</a> Going there advised me to open the Synaptic Package Manager tool (gui front end for apt), unfortunately I didn't get very far as point 3 refers to <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
"In the new dialog that opens, click the Add button on the right side of the dialog." however no such dialog appears. (see screenshot below). It did turn out that 'community-maintained open source software' was already selected, so on with the next step.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<img src="http://video.linux-noob.com/screenshots/ubuntu/7.04/post-1-1178110112.png" loading="lazy"  alt="[Image: post-1-1178110112.png]" class="mycode_img" /><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Next I closed the Synaptic Package Manager (otherwise you'll get this error in the next stage)<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<blockquote class="mycode_quote"><cite>Quote:</cite>root@anyweb-laptop:~# apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutterE: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)<br />
<br />
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?</blockquote>
 and then I  <br />
<br />
downloaded <a href="http://boredklink.googlepages.com/wl_apsta.o" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">this file</a> and proceeded to <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="codeblock"><div class="title">Code:</div><div class="body" dir="ltr"><code>root@anyweb-laptop:~# apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter</code></div></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
That will prompt you 'yes/no' to install the firmware, so obviously answer yes if you want to get wireless to work.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Next this is where the whole linux and windows users must be getting confused,<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Time to patch the firmware so do this <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="codeblock"><div class="title">Code:</div><div class="body" dir="ltr"><code>anyweb@anyweb-laptop:~&#36; sudo bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware ~/Desktop/wl_apsta.o</code></div></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
And of it goes....done yet ? no. Next we have to do this...<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="codeblock"><div class="title">Code:</div><div class="body" dir="ltr"><code>anyweb@anyweb-laptop:~&#36; sudo bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware/`uname -r` ~/Desktop/wl_apsta.o</code></div></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Nearly there, it tells me I need to bookmark <a href="http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1071920&amp;mode=linear" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url"> this link</a> and then reboot, ok I'll do that. After the reboot everything looked the same and I was still wired, I removed the wired connection and issued<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="codeblock"><div class="title">Code:</div><div class="body" dir="ltr"><code>anyweb@anyweb-laptop:~&#36; modprobe bcm43xx</code></div></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

followed by disabling the Wired connection in Network manager. Now ifconfig shows me eth1 (the wireless nic) and I can ping wirelessly, it worked ! *phew*.<br />

Why did i do the above ? because xchat wasn't installed by default. Ok once done I was on IRC. Please note noobs, that if you don't like using the cli (command line interface, or terminal) then you can click on 'Applications, add/remove' to start the package manger gui.)<br />

<br />
Next up, I configured <a href="http://www.pidgin.im/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">Gaim</a> (<a href="http://www.osnews.com/story.php/17651/Gaim-Has-Been-Renamed-Pidgin" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">not renamed to Pidgin yet</a> ?) to use my msn and gmail accounts respectively. Once done, time to copy back the data I copied to the external hdd, I plugged it in, Ubuntu found it, I selected the windows 98 file system I had copied to (fat32) and copied back all my data from the Fedora Core install. Interestingly, Ubuntu also showed the two other partitions on that hdd, which were NTFS, Fedora didn't mount them at all as no NTFS plugin was installed.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<img src="http://video.linux-noob.com/screenshots/ubuntu/7.04/post-1-1178100716.png" loading="lazy"  alt="[Image: post-1-1178100716.png]" class="mycode_img" /><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Configuring Firefox</span><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Next up, I wanted to configure firefox to be able to play all the usual stuff, flash, java, media, and so on, I don't yet know if it's pre-configured but i'll soon find out.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
I go to <a href="http://www.shockwave.com/home.jsp" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">shockwave's home</a> and straight away I'm prompted to 'click here to install plugin' so obviously Adobe Flash Player is not pre-installed, I accept the license agreement and off it goes. Done. I then head over to bbc.co.uk/news and click on a video to see what happens, it prompts for what type of viewer I will use, i choose realplayer (as it's already selected) and then click ok. It says plugin requied, and 'not available'. So I change it to 'windows viewer' and this time it starts up a media player (Totem browser plugin) but abrubptly stops.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<img src="http://video.linux-noob.com/screenshots/ubuntu/7.04/post-1-1178115953.png" loading="lazy"  alt="[Image: post-1-1178115953.png]" class="mycode_img" /><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
At this point I'm beginning to wonder why all the fuss about Ubuntu is there, I mean, I've had to configure the wireless using ndiswrapper, and I have to install plugins in firefox and now I cannot view online content, wasn't Ubuntu supposed to be taking care of all this unecessary hassle ?<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />

<span style="font-size: 8pt;" class="mycode_size">Day 1.</span><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Backing up my data, and getting Ubuntu downloaded and installed</span><br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
It chugged away for a few minutes and presented me with a Ubuntu desktop, and from there, I chose to 'install to hdd' option which was 7 or so easy steps to go through. <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<img src="http://video.linux-noob.com/screenshots/ubuntu/7.04/post-1-1178097125.png" loading="lazy"  alt="[Image: post-1-1178097125.png]" class="mycode_img" /><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
After about 30 minutes of file copying it said it was done and asked me to restart now, or continue using the live CD. I was ready to continue so I chose to restart. <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Please note that if you had configured Gaim or another application prior to this restart then those changes will need to be done again, as I found out. The first thing that you notice after installing to hdd, is that it boots much faster than from the live cd, and that there are software updates available for download.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<img src="http://video.linux-noob.com/screenshots/ubuntu/7.04/post-1-1178098140.png" loading="lazy"  alt="[Image: post-1-1178098140.png]" class="mycode_img" /><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Wireless issues.</span><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />

 <br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Configuring Ndiswrapper</span><br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
"In the new dialog that opens, click the Add button on the right side of the dialog." however no such dialog appears. (see screenshot below). It did turn out that 'community-maintained open source software' was already selected, so on with the next step.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<img src="http://video.linux-noob.com/screenshots/ubuntu/7.04/post-1-1178110112.png" loading="lazy"  alt="[Image: post-1-1178110112.png]" class="mycode_img" /><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Next I closed the Synaptic Package Manager (otherwise you'll get this error in the next stage)<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<blockquote class="mycode_quote"><cite>Quote:</cite>root@anyweb-laptop:~# apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutterE: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)<br />
<br />

 and then I  <br />
<br />
downloaded <a href="http://boredklink.googlepages.com/wl_apsta.o" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="mycode_url">this file</a> and proceeded to <br />
<br />
 <br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="codeblock"><div class="title">Code:</div><div class="body" dir="ltr"><code>root@anyweb-laptop:~# apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter</code></div></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
That will prompt you 'yes/no' to install the firmware, so obviously answer yes if you want to get wireless to work.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Next this is where the whole linux and windows users must be getting confused,<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Time to patch the firmware so do this <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="codeblock"><div class="title">Code:</div><div class="body" dir="ltr"><code>anyweb@anyweb-laptop:~&#36; sudo bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware ~/Desktop/wl_apsta.o</code></div></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
And of it goes....done yet ? no. Next we have to do this...<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="codeblock"><div class="title">Code:</div><div class="body" dir="ltr"><code>anyweb@anyweb-laptop:~&#36; sudo bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware/`uname -r` ~/Desktop/wl_apsta.o</code></div></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="codeblock"><div class="title">Code:</div><div class="body" dir="ltr"><code>anyweb@anyweb-laptop:~&#36; modprobe bcm43xx</code></div></div><br />

<br />

followed by disabling the Wired connection in Network manager. Now ifconfig shows me eth1 (the wireless nic) and I can ping wirelessly, it worked ! *phew*.<br />

<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;" class="mycode_b">Configuring Firefox</span><br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Next up, I wanted to configure firefox to be able to play all the usual stuff, flash, java, media, and so on, I don't yet know if it's pre-configured but i'll soon find out.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
 <br />
<br />

			<description><![CDATA[<br />
I decided I wanted to test Feisty this easter, even though it's a Beta. <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
A quick "update-manager -d" in terminal, and a button click later, I was on my way from 6.10-7.04 (Edgy-Feisty)<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Things were OK until Friday the 13th, when It was time for a Kernel Upgrade. I quickly figured out that something was not right with the new kernel (2.6.20-14), since it wouldn't boot. The boot splash would come up, but grind to a halt early on. Shortly after I would get the following:<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-2ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)<br />
<br />
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off<br />
<br />
(initramfs)<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
As I was looking into this problem, I found out that this was a common problem.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
To get around this, I booted with an older Kernel (2.6.20-13), and things worked almost as before, so I started looking into this too. A little reading went by, and these following "problems" are common.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
The first thing I discovered was that windows were missing the _, the square and the X up in the right corner. This is caused by the fact that metacity is not starting automatically any more. I solved this, for the time being, by adding it under Sessions, and now it works fine. Windows don't end up on top of my panels. As far as I have understood, this problem pops up for users that automatically saves the session. <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
Another little problem I had was that DVD movies wouldn't play anymore. This was also an easy little fix, simply reinstall libdvdcss2. For some reason libdvdcss2 had been deactivated during the upgrade the 13th. <br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
As for now, this is all I have, but I'll keep on testing things.<br />
<br />
 <br />
<br />
I will come back with a little more info on the Kernel problems when things indicate that this problem is solved.<br />
