Hello Folks ,

I don't expect any of you would remember me (I would be surprise if you do)... I was previous known as Vemon. I am deaf lad and used to hanging out in #Linux-Noob on EFNET.

I would say hello again as it been so long since I had my life upside down. All has been changed back in few years, I am married, got four kids... I am hardly to use community such as IRC/Forums.

And you may remember that I am a fan of Apple products - Last year it all suddenly change of heart LOL... I am starting dislike Apple, I been with iPhone for 8 years, now I have switched over to Android. I still got MacBook Pro from 2009, it getting slower now LOL... I tried to run Linux on MacBook Pro and it not well stable especially WIFI!. After Christmas this year I am going to buy a new laptop NOT Apple! I will have Windows 10 pro on half of partition for my daughter, she can do homework on it. Other half is Linux.. intentionally to use Fedora 27 because I won't have time to build from scratch on Gentoo (Still love the Gentoo LOL). I got Fedora 27 on my USB stick so i can use live on any machine till I get a "proper" laptop.

I will return to share the knowledge & support.

I am looking for a good App for Android to use IRC, so I can hanging out on IRC now and again.

Been Dabbling with linux for some years now, with the exception of the "Dreaded", and "avoided at all costs" forays into the Terminal, I can navigate folders/files and perform updates and basic stuff, but when it comes to things like compiling software or re configuring hardware.........oh dont know, as soon as go there it just all seems to go tits up of course I suppose it doesnt help that I'm mildly Lesdyxic as well I do try, but usually things either grind to a halt and then Nothing, or it breaks big time, and i have to plump for a re-install and start over after frequenting other forums and the IRC networks with requests for help, and finding that I usually get either Ignored, or someone just posts hundreds of lines of code without even a explanation of how, what, when, or why, somewhere along the line i just became very dissolusioned with it all, and it seemed to me, that if you didnt know everthing about linux...."Tuff go back to window" and if you did then hey "welcome to the club."

Cue Linux Noob, well here I am throwing myself at your mercy in the hope that i can finally master more than the GUI
Hello everyone!

I'm a n00b who, until recently, only used Windows. I took the plunge and installed Lubuntu a little over a week ago. Although I have had some seriously frustrating moments, I'm really impressed and excited by what I've seen so far - especially with the power and elegance of the terminal compared to the Windows Command Interpreter!

To give you a little more background about myself, I'm a guy in my early 20's, living near Washington, DC. In the past six months or so, I've gotten really interested in Computer Science, and I will soon be returning to school to pursue a CS degree. My brother and father are both engineers, so I grew up surrounded by computers. I managed to pick up some basic CS vocabulary and learn some rudimentary administrative tasks in Windows when I was younger, but I didn't start to look deeper until recently.

CS is an absolutely massive field, and I find all of it interesting... but programming seems to be my biggest interest. I've been teaching myself C++ for some months now, and, like Linux, I find it seriously frustrating at times, but also incredibly exciting and empowering! The most difficult thing for me right now is staying focussed on one topic, and not getting intimidated by the vast amount of stuff I don't know... I have a really bad habit of opening two dozen wikipedia tabs and getting sidetracked into reading about hardware, IP, math, etc, when I really just need a practical solution to why my widget-counting program won't compile!

At the moment, my goals for learning linux are simple: I want to become a competent user and continue exploring. In the future, I'd like to use a linux platform for developing, and contribute free software of my own some day.

However, I have had some hesitation about learning to develop with C++ in Linux. As I said above, I have a real problem with trying to learn too many different things at once, and as a result, I am not progressing as quickly in C++ as I would like. I'm pretty comfortable using Microsoft's Visual Studio (I have access to some pretty nice Windows machines), so I have to wonder if I should just stick with that for now while I build my C++ foundation, and explore Linux from other angles. The main problem being, I have heard that the GCC toolchain is likely to be overwhelming for a n00b, and while people have some good stuff to say about the Linux C++ IDE's, they always seem to qualify their praise with "but ___IDE still has a long way to go". The counterpoint to these considerations would be that I will learn to use Linux much faster if I make it my primary OS, instead of just tinkering with it at the end of the day.

Many, many thanks to all the people who help run this site and / or contribute their knowledge to it!
Hi everyone,

My name is Darshik and I am using Ubuntu. I recently started studying networking, and I am quite interested in understading Linux.

I would want to start with the basic stuff like the commands which are most commonly used. Or perhaps installing softwares apart from the ones available in the software center.

I would also like to learn more about the terminal. How to use, when to use it. I will try and spend as much time as possible here considering this is only a beginning for me and there is lot more to learn about linux.

Thank you!

I left college in 1995, where I had been studying to be a Graphic Designer. My dad wanted the best for me and offered to get me my first computer. It was an Apple 2cx. I screwed it up almost immediately, and it never worked quite right. I was never able to use it for its true purpose, and, it was about as useful as a paperweight. Every once in awhile it'd boot up, give me hope and go back to useless. I got to the point where I just hated Mac. Every once in awhile, someone would give me an older Mac and it'd make me nuts. I'd keep this one Mac locked in the closet as a way of punishing it. I hated iPods; because, the interface resembled Mac too much.

A friend gave me an Optiplex SX260 with a missing HD. He suggested that I make a Linux Pendrive. I started with Mint, then tried SUSE, then a few different Ubuntus led me to Xubuntu 10. I tried Xubuntu 11, but, the Optiplex freaked and crashed. I'm back with 10.

Linux and I have a love/hate relationship; but, its far better than my Unix relationship, though I have a jailbroken iPhone. A few of my friends are IT guys that've given me just about all that they can give. Recently, one of them suggested that I use the repository to find a package that'll do what iTunes will do. I thought, crap, what's a repository again? So, I Googled it, and, I found this place. Bear with me, I want to do better.
my interessting about linux startet since i startet with an android Smartphone and hate all the Bloat into the system and beginning with rooting and costumizing. then more and more im beginning to test some Distributions on mi Acer Notebook, but have a lot of problems with installation, Wireless connetions, mounting Harddrives and understand how to manage this things - but im not given up - and now found Linux Mint and it works - i also begann to understand the differences betwen a Linux Shell and a Dos and the installation Prozess. And now, i dont wona work with any other OS anymore... more and more im beginning to enjoy the possibiliys from Linux. So i hope i found here good inputs for use my linux.

outside from computer neding (on a noob level ) im interesting about Music (also and most and more and more free Music) and politics (like the Pirate Party and left political ideas and hate rassist and every form of discrimination) and Philosophy (my favorite philosophers are Nietzsche, Adorno and Foucault, but i also like middle age philosophers and the ancient greek)

so, thats a bit about me. And, if my english is a liitle bit foolish, its because im from switzerland and living in germany
Hey guys,

my name is Adam and I am new to linux, and when I say new..I mean NEW!!! I've tinkered around with it a little bit, read some online help posts to get some things working... but it was mainly copy paste stuff.... does anyone recommend somewhere I can go to learn what all the commands do??

for instance I have used sudo command before, but don't really know what it means and I wouldn't know how to use it if I needed to unless I was reading it online.

as far as experience, I am in IT support, supporting mac and windows computers both hardware and software, but I want to learn how to use linux and possibly use linux as a server for files, web, and email. right now, I have Ubuntu, is there one that is recommended? I Read that I should start out with fedora though, will it be that much different?

I have been through this site many times before now, I don't know why i just didn't sign up way before this... well anyways, thanks in advance guys/gals!
I have been toying with Linux for years but as I get closer to finishing my degree and aquiring more certs it's about time to buckle down and learn *nix. Eventually I'd like to get the CompTIA Linux+ cert. I know a very few comands from getting the Network+ cert but really not enough to run and maintain a linux envioroment. The goal being to dump windows all together and run in Nix.
Hi everyone. Its very nice to meet you. I have recently installed Kubuntu (my first time on Linux) and have struck a problem which hopefully you can help me with .. I am trying to install the Opera browser and I was told to open the terminal Konsole and type sudo apt-get install opera. Then it asked me for my password which is fine.

Now it reads ... package listsone .....building dependency tree ...reading state infoone ...Package opera is not availabe but is referred to by another package ....may mean package is missing obsoleted etc

Eackage opera has no installation candidate

Thats it ^^ Do I have to have gdebi installed ( i dont know what that is ). On the Opera download page it had Debian package as the default so maybe if I just go ahead and download it I can save myself all this hassle ? I havent tried that yet because I dont want to mess up my newly formatted computer with half installed programs that I dont have the skills to uninstall.

I think ive bitten off more than i can chew with this Linux thing XD

But your help would really be appreciated

thank you.

Hello everyone from an aging noob lol. I have wanted to join a forum and learn as much as i possibly can about Linux for quite sometime now so here i am.

I am currently running Ubuntu 11.04 on a 160GB Hard-Drive and have installed Lubuntu 11.04 on a separate 200GB Hard-Drive. I would really like to learn how i might install these two hard drives into the same machine and eventually i would like to learn how to dual boot two different Linux Operating Systems. Well that's my wish list for the present. Cya!
Hi Everyone,

I wanted to get with a group of Linux people that can help me get with this OS. I am an IT Guy, but I started taking class at ITT to get an actual degree and this quarter I have my fist Linux class. So I have a administrator level of knowledge when it comes to Microsoft, and a user level of knowledge when it comes to Mac. When it comes to Linux, I am at square one: running into all the noob issues (like: Where is the Device Manager? & How do I get a driver for my wireless network adapter?).

Anyways, looking forward to chatting some Linux with you all.

Thank you,
