If you're using the proprietary Nvidia driver with Linux, and you have a CRT monitor that the driver won't recognise, or for some other reason the refresh rate is set incorrectly, here are the steps for overriding the refresh rate.

You need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Before making any changes though, back it up so you can restore it if you break anything.

Code:

# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.backup-working.conf

Now open up the file as root to edit it.

Under Section "Screen", there will be a SubSection "Display" area. On the Modes line, put your desired resolution(s) followed by an underscore and then the desired refresh rate. For example, I want to run at 1600x1200 at 75 Hz, so I put:

Code:

Modes "1600x1200_75"

Normally, though, this won't override the refresh rate if your monitor is telling the driver the wrong information. To force the driver to ignore the monitor, paste this inside Section "Screen":

Code:

Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "False"

Finally, search for VertRefresh and make sure you are not trying to set a refresh rate higher than the largest number in that field.

Save the file, restart X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and you should be in your desired resolution/refresh rate combination.

Always
make sure your monitor is actually capable
of the resolution and refresh rate combination you select before you override it manually or you may permanently damage it.
Only use this if the driver is detecting the wrong values and won't let you set anything above really small resolutions, for example, not to try and push your monitor over its limits.

If you need to roll back to the old configuration file in case something goes wrong, do:

Code:

# cp /etc/X11/xorg.backup-working.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf

That's it.

For reference, here's what my xorg.conf looks like for a NVIDIA Geforce 6600 GT on a CTX VL950/EX951F 19" monitor for Ubuntu 7.10:

Code:

# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
I installed nvidia driver with the help of this link.

[/url][url=http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-fc6.html#nvidia]http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-fc6.html#nvidia

Now i have a problem. During startup process, the screen goes blank for a while and it then turns white, pink etc However also during startup, it does ask for any key to be pressed within a certain amount of time so on pressing a key it gives an option of OS on the system. It shows 2 linux installations, thats what i think it is. Selecting the top one causes the above problem, selecting the lower one works fine and loads the system. What could be the problem? is there a way to unistall it and then i test if this problem occurs again? I mean i want to check if it is the nvidia driver that is causing the problem.

Below is the code generated during installation. Any help would be appreciated.
I have a 19" monitor, so when I got home I plugged in my monitor and the highest resolution I can go to is 1024x768 which is crap. How do I fix the OS so I can go up to 1600x1200(which my monitor CAN handle)? Another question:I have Windows x64 installed on a raid 1 setup and linux installed on a separate 80g Hd, does linux have a program equal to window's device manager? I want to see where it says what video cards I have, cause I have dual 6800 Ultras in Sli, I'd also like to check the monitor and maybe install a monitor driver.

I got a new(yes thats right I actually got a piece of computer hardware that wasn't ripped from an old system) monitor for christmas and it's awesome. It' s a Samsung 204BW 20" LCD monitor. The manufacturer recommends running at 1680x1050 at 60hz. I would love to do this but it doesn't seem to want to. Anything over 1024x768 and it starts doing ugly things to fonts icons and pretty much anything else. By ugly i mean weird moving edges or ripples and waves. I noticed this originally when I edited xorg.conf by hand, but was painfully reminded when I tried using system-config-display and got the same results. Since it's a new monitor I'm thinking the problem is probably my ancient video card not being able to handle the new monitor above 1024x768, it's a Riva TNT2. Am I correct in this assumption? Or have i missed another possibility? If I'm correct I would love some recommendations for a new affordable video card. It doesn't have to be top of the line but I don't want something worse than I have. Thanks in advance guys.

Right, having now got a bit more experience with Linux, I thought I'd go for installing the Nvidia 3D graphics drivers again, on SUSE 10.0.

Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT 256 MB AGP

Monitor: CTX VL950 series 19" CRT

So, the drivers installed fine and work fine, essentially. The problem I'm having now is that the display settings get set to 1280x800@60Hz, and on my CRT, that is not good. My goal here is to keep the Nvidia drivers on and run at 1280x960@85Hz.

When using SaX2 (a GUI X11 configuration tool) to try and correct the resolution problem, it can't create the test X server for any resolution, and dies with errors (see Xerror.txt, attached). From this I think it's a problem with X not seeing the monitor's horizontal refresh rate properly, so it can't initiate any display modes.

Funnily enough, xorg.conf (also attached) sees the monitor and the refresh rate properly, and hasn't changed (I think) since the driver update. Also, VNCing to this machine from another and logging out via VNC immediately sets the resolution back to where it should be again.

Is there a way I can override what X thinks my monitor can do to get it working at 1280x960@85Hz again without VNCing at the start of every session?

Well, having upgraded to SUSE 10, I thought I would give the Nvidia drivers a go again. They installed without problem. Well, almost.

X works and everything, but I seem to be stuck at 1280x800 @ 60 Hz. I want to (and was running) 1280x960 @ 85 Hz before the driver update. I've tried everything I can think of in SaX2 (the SUSE graphical X config tool). Do I need to modify XF86Config, and if so, what do I change?

I am using a CTX VL951 19" CRT monitor. It definitely can handle 1280x960 @ 85 Hz. I've been running XP at that since I had this monitor.

Cheers for any help,
You might remember my previous thread about having had a problem with X after YaST Online Update. Well, I want to try updating the drivers again (I want to try some of SuSE's 3D games) and I still can't find Xorg.conf or any Xfree86 config files. I'm not even sure which one I use (I am new to the Linux scene).

Could someone please tell me what I should backup in case X goes wrong again?
Thanks
I installed, correctly as far as I can tell, the nvidia drivers to my geforce video card. Tuxracer works, for example, and the nvidia splash screen comes up at boot.

I installed the linux doom3 demo to see if it would work and it does not. This isn't that surprising, but the reason it didn't was surprising. The errors are about locating opengl....Here is the actual output:

I'm trying to sort out if the error is with the driver or with the game. If it is with the game...oh well, but if this indicates I'm having nvidia driver problems still....I'd like to sort it out.

I note that when I installed the drivers and did the "modprobe nvidia" command, it returned the driver information, but now modprobe nvidia only gets me another command prompt. (Yes, I entered su - before trying it, otherwise it won't even recognize the command.)

Does that indicate that somehow linux (fc3 in my case) can't FIND the module again?

Tux racer still works, which was my way of testing if the driver was installed. Tux racer would not play very well at all before the driver was installed.

Appreciate any clues!
