How embarrassing. Eight years ago, I had sysadmin powers at my university and knew my way around unix backward and forward. Now I've installed Fedora Core 6 and I'm still relying on the GUI to take care of most of my business. [img]<___base_url___>/uploads/emoticons/default_dry.png[/img]

At present, I'm trying to install Firefox 2.0.0.1. I un-tarred the compressed file and put it into a directory, /home/jennifer/firefox. That should be enough, right? Well, I execute "./firefox &" in the console window while in that directory, and ... Firefox 1.5.0.9 invariably runs. All I can guess is that in spite of explicitly stipulating that I wanted to run the version of firefox in /home/jennifer/firefox, it's defaulting to a system-wide link that refers to the old version.

How do I overwrite Firefox 1.5.0.9, obliterating it so that only Firefox 2 is left?

Thank you so much for helping out this noob.
Ok, so I downloaded firefox2.0 and now I can't install it. I'm a total n00b to the entire linux world so bear with me here. I was able to download and install the flash and java plugins for firefox 1.5 due to detailed installation instructions, but all I get from the firefox site with regards to installing 2.0 is:

Quote:Installing Firefox 2

Please note that installing Firefox 2 will overwrite your existing installation of Firefox. You won't lose any of your bookmarks or browsing history, but some of your extensions and other add-ons might not work until updates for them are made available.

Yeah. As one can see, it doesn't exactly state how to go about it for us hopelessly new users. Any help would be appreciated.

Next problem, didn't want to go create another topic while I still got this one, is that I can't get my sound to work. I get this error message everytime I log on.

Quote:Sound server informational message:Error while initializing the sound driver:
Hi there,

I sort of installed FF 2.0: it runs from the applications menu and the "web browser" button in the GUI, but if I run 'firefox' from the terminal, I still get version 1.08.

Here was my procedure:

Downloaded the tar.gz archive from firefox's site to /home/

Untarred to home:

cd

tar -xvzf firefox-2.0.tar.gz

then ran the firefox file in the directory

I also lost my bookmarks in the old version.

Can someone tell me what I did wrong?

Thanks,

Adobe have released Flash Player 9 for Linux Beta.

See the post on the Penguin.SWF blog and download the beta now!

Using it here on FC5 and it absolutely rocks!

(Note to newbies:

to install, you need to copy the file libflashplayer.so contained in the .tar.gz file to your browser plugins folder.

For Firefox, this is usually either

/usr/lib/firefox/plugins

or

Installing Sun Java and The Firefox Plugin In Debian

Corkster

Thankfully there are facilities available which make it a simple job to install Sun's Java as a Debian package.

Two packages we're going to need are java-package, and fakeroot. These can be installed simply:

Code:

apt-get install fakeroot java-package

Once the relevent packages have been installed you will need to download the Sun release of the Java package from [/url]http://java.sun.com

At the time of writing the most current version can be found here:

[url=http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp]http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

Once you agreed to the license presented to you, and have downloaded the file you will have something like jre-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.bin.

To turn this into a Debian package you should run:

Code:

fakeroot make-jpkg jre-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.bin

This command will first prompt for confirmation, then :

Ask you for your name

Ask you for your email address

Display a license agreement:<ul><li>Press Space to scroll down, or q to quit.

Type "yes" to indicate you agree with the terms.

</li>
</ul>(The name, and email address, you give will be inserted into the Debian package information - and not sent to Sun.)

Once these questions have been answered the process will inform you that your package has been built shortly afterwards. The final output you should expect to see will look something like this:

The Debian package has been created in the current directory. You can install the package as root (e.g. dpkg -i sun-j2re1.5_1.5.0+update06_i386.deb).

As the instructions tell you it is now possible for you to install the package by becoming root and running:

Code:

dpkg -i sun-j2re1.5_1.5.0+update06_i386.deb

One final step might be for you to ensure the Java software works for Mozilla Firefox, or the Mozilla browser.

The package you've installed should include a plugin for your browser. At the time of writing the most recent Sun Java version we've been using will install a plugin for you at the following location:

/usr/lib/j2re1.5-sun/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Create a symlink to this directory in your home directory:

Code:

ln -s /usr/lib/j2re1.5-sun/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/

If you wish to do this for all users on the current system instead run, as root:

Code:

ln -s /usr/lib/j2re1.5-sun/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

(You might find that the plugin has been automatically installed for all users - so it's worth checking whether you need to complete this last step yourself.)

[url=http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp]http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

</li>

It's unpacked on my Desktop, but I dont know how to install it
I can't just replace it with my old Firefox, and there is no File in the Folder wich I can run

I just found out this nice little feature in firefox. If you like to save those funny video clips you see on some websites and hate searching through the page source for the link to the media then this is for you.. So lets go to this funny video for example

[/url][url=http://www.ebaumsworld.com/videos/signfun.html]http://www.ebaumsworld.com/videos/signfun.html

Ok so when viewing that page in firefox right click anywhere on the page and goto "View Page Info" and then click the tab "Media"

Now the embeded movie should be listed as embeded in type.. just click on that and then the save as button and your saving it without looking at the source and then using wget.. NICE!
If you find that browsing webpages in FireFox is particularly slow, or non-responsive in Fedora Core Release 3, but other apps like GAIM/IRC and so on work just fine, then check the following in FireFox.

type the following address into the address bar

Code:

about:config

and scroll down to the following value

network.dns.disableIPV6

change the setting from false (default) to True by right clicking the value and choose 'toggle'

this is very cool,

if you find a webpage that doesnt render properly or simply denies you access because 'you are not using Internet Explorer' then try this, it allows you to simply 'switch' between different browser altrernatives without leaving FireFox,

in simple terms. the browser 'identifies' itself to the website, with this little application, it can 'pretend' to be Internet Explorer, try it out, it works very well.
