So, dinking around with my system last night I go through the motions of trying to update things and it appears as if I'm good to go. Am I correct in assuming that there are various ways of going about the same things as far as updates are concerned or am I missing something here.

I went through the process of apt-get update, and let that do it's thing.

I also installed Synaptic and ran through its processes and grabbed a whole bunch more updates.

Now I'm reading up on YUM.....Am I chasing my tail here or is this yet another updater that needs to be ran?

Hey, I followed this how-to, but I had httpd, mysql, and php installed from the default Disk install, so I removed php, mysql, and httpd before evreything using rpm -e and now whenever I run apt-get I get the following error,

I got a request in #fedora on how do you create your own apt-get mirror. Well its actually very easy. This will just go over how to do the updates branch for fedora core1. I also use rsync since almost every offical mirror secrectly runs an rsync server. I use this so I can keep my 120+ servers here at work updated without using all the bandwidth during updates.I can download an update once then its on the lan and updates are quick.

This is my mirror.sh script i run in crontab nightly.

rsync -az --delete  --exclude=*src.rpm rsync://mirror.hiwaay.net/fedora-linux-core-updates/1/i386/*.rpm ./

genbasedir --bloat --bz2only /mirror/apt/fedora updates

so i cd into the directory i want to store all the updates. You'll notice its called RPMS.updates this is just how apt works. If you look at your sources.list you'll see an entry like this

rpm [/url]http://ayo.freshrpms.net redhat/9/i386 os updates

so the os means RPMS.os and updates is RPM.updates

you can name them whatever you want.

Then the genbasedir is creating what is on the server so apt knows the the server has for it to download and such.

From there you can link it to your ftp or web site. Like mine is at [url=http://www.domain.com/mirror/apt/fedora]http://www.domain.com/mirror/apt/fedora

so i have a symlink that looks like /var/www/html/apt -> /mirror/apt/

then my sources file looks like

as you can see i also did the os. So I made a RPMS.os and ran the genbasedir on that. You only need to do that once. Those are the rpms off the normal fedora core 1 cds

if you have problems running up2date, and you are advised to clear your rpm database heres how

as root

My job only has a T1 line and we have around 100 RH servers that need to stay updated. If there are upgrades to apply it will quickly saturate the line for a period of time and I could space out all of the upgrade times but that is no fun. So what do I do? I create my own apt mirror from an offical RH mirror site.

I use rsync. Here is the contents of my script.

rsync -az --delete  --exclude=*src.rpm rsync://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/RedHat-updates/9/en/os/\*/ ./

that will create an apt updates directory. I also have a RPMS.os dir there all the rpms that come on the 3 cd's are placed.

As you can see that script will grab all the rpms but not grab any src.rpm files. Doing things this way only grabs a file once per upgrade. If i did normal upgrades it would need to do that 100 times
