Hi, complete noob here. I am running a dual boot system with Gusty Gibbon (Ubuntu 7.10) and am trying to use my Logitech THX Z-5300e 5.1 speakers but am getting nothing. Everything is fully updated as far as I can tell, the speakers work when I boot into Windows (I needs my gaming), and when I plug my old stereo speakers into my front audio jack they work fine. I see myself using Linux quite a bit as time goes on and would like to be able to listen to music while I do so.

I do not need the actual 5.1 settings (that is really just for games), if I could even get just the front two working I would be happy. I really do not want to end up needing to plug in a second set of speakers just for Linux.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I got Ubuntu about 2 weeks ago on my PC. So i'm just getting used to some the features. I wanted to be able to watch MOV, DIVX, etc files so I downloaded Mplayer and removed Totem

After downloading and extracting Mplayer, a set of binary libraries from the mplayer.hu website, and a skin. i created a folder, /usr/lib/codec, for the libraries and placed them there. when i run ./configure i get the following terminal response:
The following information assumes you've already added them.
Fristly, as a easy way out first. Is there a built-in .avi player in any linux distro? (preferably a easy/beginner distro)

I have tried a few distro and this does not seem to be defaulted. So, are they are .avi players that you recommend; hopefully one that is easy to install. I seem to have trouble installing.

With SUSE, no idea how to use RPMs. With Ubuntu; I paste in things and it does not seem to work and constantly get errors! So maybe as another question, which one is "good" for installing, so there is not much hassle.
Hi, we're running a fedora core 7 server which we have to run in command line mode for reasons to do with an issue with backup software. We also want to start using XMMS as a hold music server, but because of the aformentioned conflict, we need to also run xmms in commandline mode. we'll therefore need to create our play lists manually. What I've been unable to find is a really clear example of what the format of each line in the playlist should look like when we're creating it in a text editor. Can someone please show me an example so that I can start creating my own.

Thanks,

Hey all,

Well its been a while since I posted a guide on linux-noob this is due to being a bit to busy with university work, anyways I thought I would write a small guide on how to record your desktop using xvidcap. Xvidcap dose not require VNC and is capable of saving your recoding in the following formats:

Quote:X11 Window Dump (.xwd) Portable Graymap File (.pgm)

Portable Anymap File (.ppm)

Portable Network Graphics File (.png)

Joint Picture Expert Group (.jpg, .jpeg)

Microsoft Audio Video Interleaved File (.avi)

General AVI file (DIVX default) (.mpeg, .mpg)

Microsoft Advanced Streaming Format (.asf)

Macromedia Flash Video Stream (.flv, .flv1)

Macromedia Shockwave Flash File (.swf)

DV Video Format (.dv)

MPEG1 System Format (.m1v, .vcd)

MPEG2 PS Format (.m2v, .svcd)

Quicktime Format (.mov, .qt)

The first step to this guide is to install the livna repository. If you don't know how to do this you can have a read of [/url][url=<___base_url___>/index.php?showtopic=2533][/url][url=<___base_url___>/index.php?showtopic=2533]https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2533 tutorial which

shows you how to install the livna repository. Once you have installed the livna repository you can install the xvidcap utility, which is the program we will use to record your desktop

Code:

yum -y install xvidcap

Once xvidcap has been installed you can simply issue the following command to start recording your desktop:

Code:

xvidcap

If you want to specify a larger region of the screen to record you can simply issue the following;

Code:

xvidcap --cap_geometry 800x600

You can also specify the X and Y co-ordinates of the screen as shown below:

Code:

xvidcap --cap_geometry 800x600+0+0

The above will record 800x600 in the top left corner of your screen. If you want to save your recorded desktop into one of the video formats supported by xvidcap you can simply issue the following command with the following qualifiers.

Code:

xvidcap --cap_geometry 800x600+0+250 --file test.avi --format avi

Let's have a break down of the qualifiers and what they do:

--cap_geometry 800x600

This qualifier specifies the region of the screen you want to record.

--file test.avi

This qualifier tell xvidcap what to save the file as, the default is test-001.mpeg

--format avi

This qualifier tells xvidcap what format to save the data in, for a list of formats just use
Hey all,

Well its been a while since I posted a guide on linux-noob this is due to being a bit to busy with university work, anyways I thought I would write a small guide on how to record your desktop using xvidcap. Xvidcap dose not require VNC and is capable of saving your recoding in the following formats:

Quote:X11 Window Dump (.xwd) Portable Graymap File (.pgm)

Portable Anymap File (.ppm)

Portable Network Graphics File (.png)

Joint Picture Expert Group (.jpg, .jpeg)

Microsoft Audio Video Interleaved File (.avi)

General AVI file (DIVX default) (.mpeg, .mpg)

Microsoft Advanced Streaming Format (.asf)

Macromedia Flash Video Stream (.flv, .flv1)

Macromedia Shockwave Flash File (.swf)

DV Video Format (.dv)

MPEG1 System Format (.m1v, .vcd)

MPEG2 PS Format (.m2v, .svcd)

Quicktime Format (.mov, .qt)

The first step to this guide is to install the livna repository. If you don't know how to do this you can have a read of [/url][url=<___base_url___>/index.php?showtopic=2533][/url][url=<___base_url___>/index.php?showtopic=2533]https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2533 tutorial which

shows you how to install the livna repository. Once you have installed the livna repository you can install the xvidcap utility, which is the program we will use to record your desktop

Code:

yum -y install xvidcap

Once xvidcap has been installed you can simply issue the following command to start recording your desktop:

Code:

xvidcap

If you want to specify a larger region of the screen to record you can simply issue the following;

Code:

xvidcap --cap_geometry 800x600

--file test.avi
hi,

you might be wondering why im asking for the windows media player installation whereas there are mplayer and vlc. yes, i already have those on my fedora core 6 and they are working properly.

my problem is im using a transcription tool called express scribe that can only be run on linux thru wine. i was able to run mp3s and dss files but except for wav and wma due to codec problem. so, i thought on installing windows media player to get the needed audio codecs to play wav and wma.

initially, i installed vlc thinking that it can 'share' its codec with express scribe but to no avail it seems vlc has exclusive use on its built in codecs.

thanks!

Hey fellow linux users!!

Since a week I have my laptop fully running Fedora Core 6.

Fedora Core 6 comes with the "Sound Juice CD-Ripper" which I couldn't get to rip to MP3.

Since I have a PSP and I would love to rip my cd's to MP3....this is how I do it now:

Tools I use are:

- K3b (yeah the burning software)

you can get it by going into SU mode in the terminal and typing:

yum -y install k3b

yum -y search k3b mp3

After that's done, download and install this:

[/url][url=ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/carroll.cac.ps...0-1mdk.i586.rpm]ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/carroll.cac.ps...0-1mdk.i586.rpm

After that is installed FEDORA CORE 6 will tell your there is 1 new update. install that, open up K3b.

Open the "Settings => Configure K3b" window and goto the CDDB settings.

Change it (if it isn't like that allready) to access the external cddb (for titles and such)

After that open a new AUDIO-CD project and in the upper-left navigator click your cd-rom/dvd-rom station where your Audio-cd is inserted in.

After that, select the tracks you wanna rip, goto "Projects => Convert Audiofiles"

Change the "WAVE" into "MP3 (lame)", choose a destination folder and your all set!!

Press the start button and let it run.
