Hey everyone,

I'd like to upgrade our old FC4 server to FC7, however this machine is our production mail server/web server. I can have a few hours of down time but I'd rather not rebuild from scratch.

Can I upgrade from yum or the install DVD ?

Anybody know of a similar kind of software that will work on FC4? I've checked the fuji website, but they only make it for Mac & windoze.

With this software, when I connect up a digital camera, I can auto save it and this software makes a folder and re-names each photo to my chosen name or date etc.

Would appreciate if anybody could recommend an appz that will work in a similar way
Please bear with me, complete noob to linux :/

Just loaded FC4 for the first time las night. First mission is to get it connected to the net

My laptop hasn't got a network card init (yet) but for the moment I am connected via a USB network thing (According to my network configuration, under Hardware, its a Pegasus/Pegasus II USB and yes, its Ethernet). The light on this is flashing, so I know connection is going into there.

I've tried pinging 192.168.0.1 in terminal and all I get back is "Network is unreachable". I've also tried the browser, can't connect.

I've logged into my router (which is a Netgear DG834G) and looked at connected devices and it only shows up as this desktop being connected.

Any idea's how I can get connected?

Well, I've download and burned the i386 version of Fedora Core 4 for one of my older computers. For some reason I can't get it to boot from the disc at startup. I know it is the computer for sure because I can get the disc to load the boot screen on another computer. I was just wondering if maybe someone had any ideas as to what might be wrong. I've went into the BIOS to make sure it loads from the CDROM but for some reason I don't think it even trys...Is there a Linux Boot Disk or something I could put on a floppy to just force it to try to read from the CDROM. I've actually put in the older win 98 boot disk and with CDROM support in and tried to get it to read the disk that way and... I don't know if you need to know anything that would better help you understand the situation I'll be more then willing to provide it. The computer has Pentium 4 1.8Ghz and 256MB FYI.
I've recently bought a new machine with the following hardware. Before I install Fedora on it, I'd like to know of any precautions/compatability issues (such as drivers) I may come across and/or need to know about so I can overcome it while I'm setting the machine up.
To keep the mbr intact, at the fedora installation, in the bootloader avanced option select to

install the bootloader to the first sector of the / partiton (/boot). when installation complete

you can install from fedora with linux rescue or from windows xp with Wingrub.

Put the first cd of linux (fedora) in the boot prompt type:

linux rescue

follow the instructions untill you get the login prompt, to change to your linux system , type:

chroot /mnt/sysimage

open the /mnt directory to open your linux system, now copy the first sector of your /boot

partition to the current directory with:

dd if=/dev/hdax of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

need to copy the bootsect.lnx to C drive, to mount the C drive, make a directory in

/mnt/windows:

mkdir /mnt/windows

mount the C drive on /mnt/windows:

mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows

if the file system is ntfs change the vfat(fat 32) to ntfs, to copy run the command:

cp -fv bootsect.lnx /mnt/windows

other way is to copy the bootsect.lnx to any removable media like floppy and then to the

C drive.

Start windows xp, open the dos, change to the C drive, open the boot.ini in the notepade:

C:\>notepade boot.ini

add this line to the boot.ini:

C:\bootsect.lnx="Linux"

save and exit, this will add the linux to windows xp ntldr.

Hi all.

I've just installed FC 4 (for the 3rd time) in order to isolate a problem with the console display. Briefly, running up2date or yum breaks the monitor. The display is fine through the boot, even looks like 1280x1024, but when it hits the xdm (gdm?) the screen is whacked. A green line crawls across the top left to right, slowly spreading. The middle is white and the bottom fifth or so is blue.

During the post-install/initial boot setup my video card (3Dfx Voodoo 4500) and monitor (Acer AL1715) are both recognized. All is fine after the install.

On my first two attempts to build this box I grabbed everything in up2date. Result: same busted monitor symptom. The latest kernel (kernel-2.6.15-1.1830_FC4) was not out during the first two installs, so I was grabbing the one prior. This time I updated yum to use livna and installed yumex and launched the latter, forgoing up2date. The latest kernel and kernel-devel rpms were listed.

This time around I only selected the kernel and kernel-devel rpms. The dependency check required udev-071-0.FC4.2, so what choice did I have. I ran the update, rebooted, whammo! same prob. Since booting to the original kernel doesn't help, I gotta finger udev as the culprit. Erasing the udev rpm screws the system royally (no X) as one might suspect, so I added udev* back using yum. reboot. Jacked-up monitor returns. Familiarity begins to breed contempt.

I can VNC into it fine, so again, all signs point to udev (vs. some xorg thing; went down that road on install #2). Some Linux rag article on udev states that /etc/dev will be repopulated dynamically on every boot. Since I have no /etc/dev, perhaps he meant /etc/udev. Regardless, I'm clueless how to proceed. Another install seems ... stupid. Hoping one of you smart, not-pissed-off folks can lend a hand.

In the meantime, that PC's got some BOiNC # crunching to do. In WinXP. It's a sad day. I hope I awake to a nugget of truth under my virtual pillow.

TIA.

PS - Tried searching bugzilla.redhat.com but that site is about as whacked as my console.

PPS - under Desktop | System Settings | Display the video card and monitor are correctly identified (this gleaned from a VNC session)

PPPS - I'm currently running the first major rpm update (using yum | yumex), in which the latest xorg-X11 stuff is included. I did this as part of install #2 and it did not help, which leads me to think that this sticky post: https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1808

does not apply. Since the # of rpms is massive and yumex appears hung (probably just churning away in the bg), I can't say this for certain, however.
