Hello I am a new user of the FC6 OS,I need to install a virtual machine using Vmware.The virtual machines must run the Windows XP OS and then both must be connected using Samba,But every time I try to acces the Linux machine windows keeps telling me its not in the network and the name "localhost" is a duplicate.

I've gone over the configuration of the smb.conf and I find no mistake I have even used the test smb.con that samba.org offers
Dear All,

I am an absolute beginer and have just installed Fedora 6 . I am not happy with its default ODF reader as it is too slow, loads each page one at a time so I would like to switch to Acrobat Reader. I would like to know the individual steps to install it as I am totally unfamilior with the commands and codes. Need help .

PS The help I got from this forum in Installing Mplayer was very very good. It was just the stuff a beginer needs.

Well , if you have tried like me to install the VMware Server or WorkStation on a new kernel [ kernel 2.6.20-1.2948.fc6] like me & had no luck !!!

Here is the Solution.

I have tried this tutorial which is at http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_server_fedora_core_6 which did not work for me cause whoever wrote that article is outdated now & will not work for you either (with all my respect to whoever wrote it) .

If you have a new kernel like me kernel 2.6.20-1.2948.fc6 (where they are talking about 2.6.19-1.2911.fc6), this is how i got it working.

1)Register to get your free serial number(s) to start using VMware Server & then download http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmser...-44356.i386.rpm.

2)Make sure you have the following or updated

* gcc

* gcc-c++

* kernel-devel

* xinetd

& if i was in your shoes i will also install

compat-gcc-34

compat-gcc-34-c++

which will not harm your box (FC6 includes GCC 4.1 compiler. Some applications will NOT compile in GCC 4.1)

install GCC 3.4 to allow compiling applications which do not yet support GCC 4.1

yum install

3)uname -r & it should spit 2.6.20-1.2948.fc6

4)rpm -q kernel-devel & should spit [kernel-devel-2.6.20-1.2948.fc6]

5) rpm -i /home/user_name/VMware-server-1.0.3-44356.i386.rpm

6)VMWare server is installed & for your box to use it you will have to configure it

7)$ su -

# vmware-config.pl

this is what you get:

In which directory do you want to install the mime type icons ?

[/usr/share/icons]

What directory contains your desktop menu entry files? These files have a .desktop file extension. [/usr/share/applications]

...

In theory , you can valid & confirm each section.

8)End of installation if you have no errors !!! your configuration should look like this

The configuration of VMware Server for Linux for this

running kernel completed successfully.

You can now run VMware Workstation by invoking the following command:

"/usr/bin/vmware".

Enjoy,

--the VMware team

as root

/etc/init.d/xinetd start

9)Now if everything went wrong & the vmware-config.pl aborted to configure with something like this

Using 2.6.x kernel build system.

make: Entering directory `/tmp/vmware-config0/vmnet-only'

10) Rendez vous at this page & download http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/vmware-any-any-update109.tar.gz which is a patch to fix this problem where it will save you a great big headache.

11)put this file in your /home/user_name & -> tar -xzf vmware-any-any-update109.tar.gz

12)After the file has been extracted, change to the /vmware-any-any-update??? directory and run:

13) ./runme.pl

14)During the configuration, which automatically follows right after the patch has been applied, I accepted all of the defaults to the questions that are asked, meaning the paths to directories that were listed,
I loaded up fc6 x86_64 and did the usual new OS stuff. After setting up the servers and using konquerer in superuser to view the maillog file "by right clicking on the file and edit with kwrite" I closed konquerer and did a yum update. After a reboot I went back to check the mailog file and got the following error KDEinit could not launch 'kwrite'. I tried to view the maillog file with a different editior and still the same error only with the selected editor name where kwrite was. I tried to use krusader but got the same error. After a little while I started looking on Google and discovered that this not only happens in fedora but in other distribution as well and it most often happens after a major upgrade (mephis,suse,knoppix) KDE. After trying several things that were posted on Google and finding most them worthless I came across this:

open terminal session as user and execute the follow at the prompt:

xhost +local:0

after I did this everything seems to work find now. If anyone knows more about this issue please follow up so I and others can learn something.

Greetings,

Due to popular demand, i.e. anyweb, I'm writing this guide to help those who are having issues installing Linux on any system with the nVidia GeForce 6150 chipset (North Bridge), and the nForce 420 MP (South Bridge) chipset, in my case, the Compaq Presario V6000 laptop. In my case here, I'm installing Fedora Core 6, which is why I've posted here.

For those of you, like me, who have tried many times in the past to install a Linux distro on such a system, will have come across an issue where-by the system locks up after booting up all the system's services. This is due to the Ethernet drivers. The actual chipset its self, nVidia reports, is not at fault, but instead the drivers are.

So, how do you get around this little announace? It's actually rather simple... remove any network cables you have plugged into any NICs in your system, then boot up. Basically, what's happening is the OS is trying to obtain an IP from any DHCP servers that pick up, i.e. your router, and this for some reason causes the system to lock up.

Once you've booted up and logged in, you'll need to obtain an IP - it's also now safe to plug in your network cable, which you should do now - bring up a terminal and 'su' you to root and type "/sbin/dhclient eth0", this will get you an IP from your DHCP server/router and you should be all up and running.

At this stage, I'd suggest running over to nVidia and downloading the graphic card drivers and other drivers for your system.

I hope this helps someone out there as I was pulling my hair out over this for days.

Regards,
It is designed to be highly flexible, extensible, and portable, all the while keeping in mind that the users know how they want their desktops to act better than we do.

I recently starting exploring different windows managers and wanted to try Enlightenment on fc6. While looking for information about E16 I came across the following website that has a yum repo for E17 which is updated weekly. Check it out it's pretty neat.

http://sps.nus.edu.sg/~didierbe/index.html

To aquire Enlightenment E17 for FC6

Download and run the following RPM to install the yum repo:

http://sps.nus.edu.sg/~didierbe/share/dc-f....fc6.noarch.rpm

Then open a terminal session and type: yum install enlightenment

Then log out of the current session you are in and log back in changing your session to Enlightenment!

Check out the links and other information on the main page. Also it's important to remember that this is not released yet although it has been in development for a while now.
