Updating from Fedora 12 to Fedora 13

today I decided to upgrade from Fedora 12 to Fedora 13 to see what the new release was like,

to do so I did as follows

open a console and logged in as root

su -

then downloaded two Fedora 13 release files needed for the next step

wget ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/fedora/linux/releases/13/Fedora/i386/os/Packages/fedora-release-notes-13-3.fc13.noarch.rpm

and

wget ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/fedora/linux/releases/13/Fedora/i386/os/Packages/fedora-release-13-1.noarch.rpm

then

rpm -Uvh fedora-release-notes-13-3.fc13.noarch.rpm fedora-release-13-1.noarch.rpm

once done

do

yum update

this takes a while, i had 1130 packages to update

Fedora 13 Delay Fixes Linux GRUB Bug

No, Fedora 13 Linux is not coming out today (and if you read my blog last week you'd know that!). The release was pushed back by a week to fix a number of blocker bugs, among them is an interesting one that many users might simply consider to be just a papercut nuisance.

GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader), the loader that most Linux users see when they first boot up, had a very small issue in it that might have affected users. For some users (myself included) GRUB is a critical screen where you can select which operating system you want to load. That could be a different Linux kernel on the same OS, a different Linux distribution altogether or even Windows.

Usually the way GRUB works by default is the user gets to select which kernel/OS they want to load with a time delay before a default kernel OS loads. That's where the GRUB bug comes into play.

Fedora 13 (Goddard) Beta Released

The Beta release of Fedora 13 (codename "Goddard") blasts off today, true to its namesake, scientist and liquid-fueled rocketry pioneer Robert Hutchings Goddard. The Fedora 13 Beta release gives an early peek at free and open source technologies that reach new heights of functionality and usability. The Beta milestone is when the Fedora Project encourages users, developers, and administrators of all types to download and try out the release early. While generally the Beta is reasonably stable, this is the time for users to exercise their favorite parts of the system and report any lingering bugs before the final release.

Fedora 13 Gains Features, Progresses

Phoronix has covered some details on the progress of Fedora 13 development before and now has more details on the recently approved features. Features are approved by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee, a fully elected community of members in the Fedora community. The full list of Fedora 13 features is here and it is planned to be released on May 11, 2010
