Currently using Ubuntu 25.1. I'm trying to get it to work on my laptop, but I've had this same issue on an HP desktop and a desktop I built myself. The issue is the same each time, no matter which distro I use and which PC I use:

I boot up, Wi-Fi works great. If I stop interacting with it for 5 minutes or so (like during a network transfer), the system stops recognizing my Wi-Fi and it doesn't work again until I reboot. Then the cycle just continues.

It makes torrenting impossible and I can't use network file transfers because they all take longer than this timeout bug. This happens on Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, and Debian. What am I missing here? How do I fix this?

I tried doing a search for vpn but it wont let me search under four characters so i will be so bold as to start a new topic.

I've been exploring the wonderful world of linux for a while now and since lately i got myself a vpn connection from ipredator which i use at all times when connected to the internet

I've been doing some scripting to have all relevant processes killed and the network disconnect in case the vpn goes down, i guess i'm just a bit paranoid. But all that works just fine.

Now i've been monitioring traffic on both ppp0 and wlan0 interfaces with this nifty little tool called ifstat.

What i notice is that at any time i am connected and traffic goes through the ppp0 interface i get about 10-15% more through my wlan0 interface. I have no clue where to ask about this and can't find the keywords to google the relevant information.

So, if anyone can help me out here? is it normal to have that much more traffic on the wi-fi than what goes actually through the vpn connection? Is it to do with the fact that the data's being encrypted or something? Anything to make me wiser about it or point me in the direction where i can find more info about this specific situation would be greatly appreciated.

I put a small portion of the output of ifstat here on pastebin : http://pastebin.com/9NEa8Zar

Go easy on me, i know a bit or two about computers but this is completely new to me.

Also, i can't seem to find anything about firewall rules to have a single program/process blocked from using anything but the ppp0 interface, all i can find is allow ip-ranges and open-close ports, anything for dummies on that subject would be most welcome as well

I reinstalled my whole system cuz I wanted some changes. So I reinstalled kvm and installed a virtual pc.

However I do not get a network connection, my virtualpc doesn't get an ip adress. I checked to see if kvm

created a bridge and it did:

virbr0	Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 52:54:00:FB:2B:21

I tried creating a bridge manually that causing the loss of all my network connections but I made a backup

of the config file luckily. I then tried doing selecting a different virtual network card in kvm for my virtualpc.

Same results. I then thought, well let's try installing virtualbox again and see what happens. So I create

my virtual pc and install a system and I have the same thing, my virtual pc doesn't get an ip. Not in any

network setting. So I figured that the problem is not with kvm and not with virtualbox. But be something

else on my system, but find it strange after a fresh install this happens. I don't want an answer, cuz I'd

like to figure this out myself but just writing it out to think it through. Cuz I want to be able to learn

to fix things myself. So I know it's not the virtual software that's not working right, but have to look

somewhere towards my networkcard/network connection. You can reply for tips, but I'll post as

soon as I get a bit further.

My proxy/webfilter is running great. Just thought it might be better to have it set for all devices connected on my internet network. So that I don't have to set it up mannually for every device. I have Linksys WRT160N, and I read that the standard linksys router software does not allow setting up a proxy. But that I need to use dd-wrt . I found an instruction on how to do it and it doesn't look that hard. But how smart is it to do. Cuz I always go by the saying for computer stuff: "don't fix what ain't broke" or I could buy a second network card, have my internet connection on it so that I could filter/proxy it and connect another router too it, and to the second router I could connect all my devices. or something like that? Not too great in networking. That acuatually sounds better if it is possible. Because I don't really like messing with router firmware if it's running fine.

So if I wanted to do it without messing with the firmware I would probably want to setup like this?

Downstairs(modem)-->router1--mypc(nic1)---proxy/filter-->mypc(nic2)--->router2(make this gateway for all connecting devices)

Does that sound correct? But I have no idea how I would be able to connect two nic's. would have to do some research on that.

I have recently replaced Slackware Linux 10.1 with 13.1 and I am experiencing a local remote networking issue over FTP. When I am transfering data over a local route, whether it is to or from the server, the connection stops - all data transfer drops to 0.0k/sec, and even SSH locks out remote access when this occurs. I can still use the local machine in all its functions, but I cannot reconnect via FTP or SSH until I reboot the server.

I have tried to find a reason why this is occuring and I cannot. Transfer speeds are relatively healthy - 50-65 megabytes per second writing to the server and 60-90 megabytes per second reading data from it. If I throttle the transfer speed, it still times out regardless.

My local backup dumps over FTP to the server without locking up. I can retrieve from the FTP through the backup software as well without an issue. Yet still, direct FTP transfer using FlashFXP to ProFTP drops and locks out remote connections.

The only error I can find is in the ProFTPD log:

Jul 09 18:10:32 raven proftpd[1911] localhost (192.168.x.x[192.168.x.x]): USER <hiddenuser>: Login successful.

Jul 09 18:29:00 raven proftpd[1911] localhost (192.168.x.x[192.168.x.x]): sendfile transmission aborted

Jul 09 18:29:31 raven proftpd[1911] localhost (192.168.x.x[192.168.x.x]): notice: user <hiddenuser>: aborting transfer: Unknown error 4294967295

Jul 09 18:31:29 raven proftpd[1911] localhost (192.168.x.x[192.168.x.x]): Client session idle timeout, disconnected

Jul 09 18:31:29 raven proftpd[1911] localhost (192.168.x.x[192.168.x.x]): FTP session closed.

This error appears in the logs prior to locking out remote access, but I have yet to find out what the flux is causing it!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a wireless net between an outbuilding and my house. The ISP service comes into the WAN port of a router in the out building. A WiFi bridge in the house connects to the external router, the bridge is connected to the WAN port of a second router which creates the internal home network.

Inside the house on the internal network I have a Linux appliance with an attached USB drive for storage. It supports SSH but not FTP (and no repos to pull additional protocols from, so adding software requires compiling or hacking).

I have forwarded port 22 (soon to change) through my internal router to the appliance. From a workstation on the outside network in the out building, I can open a remote terminal on the appliance using

"shh <exteral_IP_of_inside_router> -l <username>", but using the same parameters and the FISH (FIle transfer over secure SHell) in Krusader returns "Error: Could not enter folder". Krusader (and WinSCP) connect to the appliances storage fine on workstations on the internal network.

I've also discovered that both SCP and WinSCP via WINE can access the appliance across the inside router, but with widely fluctuating transmission speeds and dropped connections.
Hello everyone,

Firstly let me say that I've tried su - and /sbin/ifconfig it's not there. For some reason I seem to have "lost" it or something because ever since I installed the distro a while back it hasn't been there. I'm running Debian. I do have iwconfig, which for most of my needs works but I'm trying to get the loopback (lo) interface running but without ifconfig that's kind of difficult

I do have commands for ifup and ifdown but they don't work because (I'm assuming from reading error outputs) that they call on ifconfig.

If someone could help me out on how to fix/get ifconfig i'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you
I'm only partially new to Linux. I'm running Fedora 11. I've just set up two machines, I thought to be identical. Evidently I missed something. I had some problems getting the network started on the second machine, and I must have forgotten a name change somewhere. Anyway, after doing lot's of comparisons between the boxes, editing and renaming and re-linking the ifcfg-GigaStorey file, they are both functioning. The problem is that whenever I start or restart the network on box 2, it reports the following error:

Code:

Bringing up interface GigaStorey: RTNETLINK answers: File exists
