Well, it's true, I've neglected this site for years, for various reasons including work, my Microsoft MVP commitments, and of course the sister site windows-noob.com.

You could say I've practically ignored linux-noob.com and done as little as possible to help it survive other than the bare minimum which is to keep the domain name alive and make sure the data in the site itself was protected, but the time has come to re-resurrect the site, breath new life and start afresh.

So, today I've updated the site license, and will with the help of the web server admin plan to upgrade the site to the latest and greatest version of Invision Power Board and once that is complete, start to re-energize this site and get people coming back.

Please help !

But before doing that, I need you to help me understand what exactly you want to read about on linux-noob, what should this site be about going forward ?

Do you want a complete re-birth or just move forward and start-over ?

I'd love to read your comments and look forward to the next stages !

cheers

hi all,

well i logged on this morning to see a 'database driver error' here on the site, and the usual fixes didn't help, after trying many things i had to resort to restoring yesterdays MYSQL backup for linux-noob.com

the end result of that is it has resovled the database issue, but it may mean that a post (or posts made between yesterday and today) are lost

I apologise for that and thank you for your patience
hi all,

I'm continuing to improve the site by giving people what they want, a new look and more features !

Over the next few days the site will get the final update to IPB 3.0 (it's release candidate now) and I've just purchased IP Blog (it's a yearly license) to add to the new look. Hopefully I will have all completed by the weekend

and more importantly, I hope you guys like and appreciate the changes
linux-noob.com was down for about 12 hours and lost data due to a FORCED hardware reboot (i didn't do it)

the reason for the reboot was I submitted a support ticket to the host asking why i was getting network timeouts

they rebooted my server without asking me, as a result, the database got corrupted and data was lost
hi all,

some of you may have noticed the 12 hours or so of downtime, this was because i had no time to prepare and had to move my servers data plus rent a new box in Amsterdam

well, the box is up (with Centos) and i've got the latest versions of apache/php and mysql installed, i've reimported the data from the old server so no data is lost

i have some back office house keeping still to do but the guts are there and you are here now, which is a success

cheers
due to unforseen circumstances, www.linux-noob.com will go offline tonight January 8th 2009.

At this point I cannot say WHEN it will come back online,

I received an printed letter today (2009/08/jan) stating that

1. a user has complained that an email received from www.linux-noob.com (entitled happy new year from linux-noob.com 3rd January 2009 - 10:16 PM) was spam (it wasn't, see below)

The review section is here > http://linux-noob.com/review and as you can see it needs NEW reviews.... so if you want to review your chosen distro, whatever it is, then please contact us

2. a webserver called http://linux-noob.com breaks the ISPs terms and conditions (point 4.1, appa\rently you are not allowed to have a webserver providing a service or information to others)

As this contradicts the ISP's terms and conditions, I have been given until 2009/09 at 8.am to fix it (ie: take it offline)

I apologise for this in advance and hope to have everything back online again very soon,
