Hey everyone,

We have about 14 computers that VPN in from various locations around the city. I would like to keep track of what updates are install on each of these computers so I though about using WSUS on our win2k3 server.

I've setup some local office machines to pull updates from our WSUS server and it seems to work fine, however I'm wondering if it's possible for the VPN clients to just report what updates they have to our WSUS but download the updates from microsoft, not over our VPN connection :/

Any ideas?

Is there any commands to remotely execute a batch file on another machine in the network?
like say I wanted to open like note pad or execute any number of batch files on another computer on the network, what would be the command and parameters before "open notepad" ?

I want to help a friend rig up a new laptop with Linux, but preferably without wiping off the current Windows installation. The distro of choice is likely to be SUSE. The reason this is a Windows question is that there is this weird partition already on the laptop in addition to the C: drive which I don't know what does and that I haven't seen before.

Screen:

Is it safe to wipe off that second partition and put Linux in that space? If not, how will it be possible to resize the partition? I'm confused, because I never use the images of Windows that come preinstalled, I always wipe and start from scratch.

Any help would be great, thanks.

hey all. I have 2 really boring and really easy computer classes at school. Like every web-site that isnt school related is blocked, its crazy. Sometimes I use proxy sites, but those only work to a certain extent. I even tried running a Linux Live cd on the computer, and tried going on the net on that, still the web sites were blocked, which means its all on the schools sever. I want to be able to surf the web freely, and play games and stuff.

Is there anyway I could use my computer at home as a sever or something and go to the internet through it?

anyone know how to do this?

I have a 1 gig flash drive, so storing data and stuff shouldnt be a problem.

thanks.

How would I shut down a networked computer remotely, with a batch file? Im guessing it has something to do with ending the svchost.exe process. I can get to another computer, with a simple:

@echo off

start \\"network name"-"computer name" \c$\

and im able to view the files.

but I dont know how to run a command on that computer, let alone shut it down. So if anyone could give me some helpful tips, it would be greatly appreciated. Other fun things to do with batch files on networks would be awesome as well.
OK, here's a bit of background on what I'm trying to do. I need to show someone a PHP/MySQL powered website (built and tested in Linux) without uploading to a server. The only system I can get to is a laptop running Windows XP Pro, and I don't want to boot a live Linux distro.

I have installed Apache/PHP/MySQL on this laptop and they are talking to each other OK. What I want to build is a short batch script that will start MySQL, and then Apache and then launch a browser to view automatically without fumbling around in the CLI. I am running Apache *not* as a service. Here is my code so far:

Code:

@echo off
echo Now starting test server, please wait...
echo.
echo.
echo.
rem pause
echo Starting database server...
echo.
net start mysql
rem pause
echo.
echo Starting web server...
echo.
"C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\bin\apache.exe"
pause
echo.
echo Now loading Internet Explorer to show the page...
rem pause
echo.
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "http://127.0.0.1:8080"
echo.
echo The server is now started, please go to your Internet Explorer window to view the page
echo.
echo.
echo.
echo ===========================================================
echo To stop the servers, please press any key.
echo (Apache must be stopped manually by closing the CMD window)
echo ===========================================================
pause>nul
echo.
echo Stopping database server...
echo.
net stop mysql
echo.
echo Done.
echo.
echo Press any key to quit.
pause>nul

The problem is, the line

Code:

"C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\bin\apache.exe"

just causes the script to hang, as Apache is running in the same CMD window. Is there a way like Bourne Shell's & to run it in the background? I have tried using the start command, but it doesn't seem to start the server properly.

Output of the script:

Any help would be appreciated,

I have just reinstalled Windows XP Home SP2 and have got this problem for the second time. This problem has just reinforced my view that Linux is so much better than Windows . If any of you know anything that might be able to help me, I would be very grateful.

Sounds on Windows are now extremely choppy, especially this is noticable at startup and shutdown with the Windows XP sounds. Also, after logging on and using a program or two, the mouse pointer freezes and stays in one position. It still works, but you can't see it, so you have to guess by rollover effects where the pointer is. There is a workaround to use the Show location of pointer when I press Ctrl in the Mouse Properties, and this is how I'm actually forced to use Windows.

As far as I can tell, this problem started just after installing Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition (with MSDN and MS SQL Server). Since this brings along .NET Framework 2.0 and MSXML 6.0, however, I'm not sure what is doing this. I've tried removing all the components of VB2005, to no avail. I've also already just rebuilt Windows from having this problem, so I'm not very happy with Microsoft at the moment. [img]<___base_url___>/uploads/emoticons/default_dry.png[/img]

From Googling my problem, the only related thing I've found has been:

[/url][url=http://www.experts-exchange.com/Security/Q_21641382.html]http://www.experts-exchange.com/Security/Q_21641382.html

But I don't have a subscription, so I can't see the answer. I don't think it's spyware, though, because this is a completely new installation of Windows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

But I don't have a subscription, so I can't see the answer. I don't think it's spyware, though, because this is a completely new installation of Windows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

when I read dmesg, the only line that returns anything to do with: error, fail, crash, die, exit, quit, abort, etc is this:

kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno = 2

Does anyone know what this means, and if at all it would affect the way my box runs?

Thanks.
I've decided that I'm not pro enough to deal with the piles of config and compatability work in linux on a regular basis, so I'm going to boot to a XP partition.

The harddrive is currently partitioned with a spare 80gb sector I'm not using, and I plan on putting Windows there. Before I burn the cd, is there anything I need to know, along the lines of:

--will xp install peacefully within the partition, and if not, would it be easier just to reformat and repartition the entire thing then reinstall rh9 afterwards?

--what do I need to do within the rh9 burning program to make sure the disk qualifies as a boot disk?

--is there a way to store files on a third partition where they can be mutually accessed by both systems? (I remember linux has a tool to interact with windows-formatted filesystems, but I dont know if it works across a partition)
