Been using lftp for a bit now, and like it as a client due to nice inbuilt features and shell-like behaviour.

However, with my recent server I've noticed some strange behaviour with this client, mainly with obtaining directory listings. I can ftp into another server and perform a "dir" or "ls", but when changing directory both commands still show the old listing. Peculiarly, I can use TAB to auto-complete in a "cd" command and it will see that a different directory exists, but then refuse to change to that directory since the name doesn't exist in the (old) dir listing.

I solved this once by turning off caching and flushing it to force a re-read of the directory, but once it had obtained a listing it then stubbornly refused to update remote server listings.

This happens on one box running F9 with lftp3.6.3 - two other boxes running F8+lftp3.5.14 and F4+lftp3.2.1 are fine.

Oddly it only seems to do it over ftp: and ftps: connection to remote servers - sftp: connections are fine, working as expected.

Any ideas?

FTP Considerations

Some good advice in other threads, so I thought I'd consolidate it here:

Firstly, consider:

<ol style="list-style-type: decimal">
[*]WHY set one up? (read/write/delete permissions, and who?)

[*]WHO is using it? (authenticated/guest/anonymous)

[*]HOW is it being used? (quota checking, secure connections, archiving old files, port numbers)

[*]WHAT will the end users use for client connectivity? (FTP client/command-line/sftp etc)

</ol>

Some simple answers are:

- I'm setting one up for friends to share photos. Each friend will have upload/download access to a shared area, but not be able to delete anything. For reasons of security, they will not be able to navigate out of this area either.

- I'm running a gaming server and I want two admins to be able to drop new maps and mods into a directory that anyone can download. For security, FTPS need to be enabled so that the admin username/passes aren't transmitted plain-text, but anonymous access will not require encrypted connections - but will be subject to quota controls to prevent bandwidth-hogging.

These are what people refer to as "problem specification" - without making it clear what your end objectives are, you may well end up with something hastily-configured that's leaving you open for attack.

Some security considerations are:

FTPS = uses secure (encrypted) connections over FTP, has a slight performance overhead with the encryption/decryption process.

SFTP = can use ordinary SSH/SCP so don't need an FTP server, but means potentially giving shell access to a user.

Port num: port 20 and 21 are commonly used for FTP servers, and get regularly sniffed. Consider binding the port number to something different, such as 12321, 54321, 21021 etc, to move it out of the range of impatient port-scanners.

PASV/PORT connections: may need to punch a hole in your firewall - or advertise which port is in use - for transfer to work properly

Capacity planning: is it possible for someone to fill up your filesystem, or have you got quota management on?

Permissions: group users into roles (uploader/downloader/manager/viewer etc) then assign privs per role.

Auditing: check logfiles (use logwatch) to monitor activity, particularly for nefarious behaviour. Consider using something like AWStats to report usage.

User mapping: every file/directory under Linux is owned by a user and group; if you have virtual FTP users, who will be the eventual owner of uploaded content?

Considerations such as the above will determine your choice of FTP software. Largely speaking, there are four to choose from:

<ol style="list-style-type: decimal">
[*]WU_FTP (Wisconsin FTP) - basic, feature-light.. don't use it.

[*]vsFTPD - Very Secure FTPD.

[*]ProFTPD

[*]Pure-FTPd - my choice.

</ol>

if you've ever setup vsftpd and noticed that when you login it defaults the user to their home directory

eg: user anyweb will ftp in to

/home/anyweb/

then how can you let that user access another folder outside of their home ?

using bind !

here's a quick example

Code:

[root@www anyweb]# mkdir ftp2
[root@www anyweb]# mount --bind /ftp2 /home/anyweb/ftp2
[root@www anyweb]# mkdir ftp3
[root@www anyweb]# mount --bind /ftp3 /home/anyweb/ftp3

now when you ftp in, you'll see the contents of /home/anyweb PLUS ther'll also be two additional folders called ftp2 and ftp3 and anything you dump in there or read from there comes directly from the 'real' directories

/ftp2

and

/ftp3

got it ?

thanks to jY in #linux-noob for this tip

Hello,

I followed the topic 'Install vsftpd on fedora core 4' and completed setup. However, now when I try to log in, it rejects my username and/or password (even though I know both are correct). If I use the terminal to log in, I get the following:

ftp> open localhost

Connected to localhost.localdomain.

500 OOPS: failed to open vsftpd log file:/var/log/vsftpd.log

I have checked to see if the file exists (which it does) and made sure the permissions are not an issue. Does anyone know why it is returning this message and how to solve it?

Thanks!
If not installed yet;

go to "Desktop" > "System Settings" > "Add/Remove Applications", enter your root password (or run the "system-config-packages" command as root), then tick the check box for "FTP Server", click "close", click "update" and "continue". You may be asked to insert the Fedora Core 4 installation disk #3 to continue. Go to "Desktop" > "System Settings" > "Security Level". Provide your root password, click "ok" and on the "Firewall Options" tab make sure the checkbox next to "FTP" is checked. On the "SELinux" tab under (expanded) "FTP" make sure all the checkboxes are checked except "Disable SELinux protection for ftpd daemon". Check the checkbox next to "Relabel on next reboot". (You will have to re-configure your iptables setup after your next boot as described in the Azureus section above as the relabel process overwrites your iptables files.) Click "ok". Reboot your machine to enable the new SELinux settings.

* If you are using a router you may have to forward ports 20 and 21 in order for your FTP server to work through your router's firewall. See [/url][url=http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm]http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm for instructions.

* Register a new domain name for your Fedora box, have it mapped to your IP address, and configure your /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/network files as described in the web server section above.

* Open the terminal. Type:

su -

Hit enter. Type:

gedit /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf

Hit enter. In gedit change "anonymous_enable=YES" to "anonymous_enable=NO". Also add a line that reads "chroot_local_user=YES" just under the line that reads "#chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd/chroot_list". Also uncomment (remove the "#" from) the ascii_ lines so that they read "ascii_upload_enable=YES" and "ascii_download_enable=YES". Click on the "save" icon in gedit to save your vsftpd.conf file and exit gedit. Close the terminal.

* Go to "Desktop" > "System Settings" > "Server Settings" > "Services". Type in your root password in the dialog box that appears and click on "OK". Scroll down the list and check the check box for "vsftpd". Click on the "save" icon in the Service Configuration window and then close the window. Do this for runlevel 3 as well as for runlevel 5. Reboot your machine. You should now be able to access your home user's directory with an FTP client. The host name on your client will be your registered domain name or the IP address of your Fedora Core box. The user ID will be your Fedora Core non-root user name. The password will be your Fedora Core non-root user's password. (I recommend turning off passive mode on the client to speed up transfers. If you use gftp as a client you should edit /etc/sysconfig/iptables-config on the server and add "ip_nat_ftp" into the "IPTABLES_MODULES="" directive so that it reads "IPTABLES_MODULES="ip_nat_ftp". Then reboot your machine.)
