Hi all!

This is my first post, and my second linux distro. I started with Ubuntu, liked it, but had to scrap it due to the fact that I'm a total noob, and right now I don't have the time to get it working juuust right. So I'm back to WinXP on my desktop.

However, I've decided to put Knoppix on my laptop. It installs just fine, but at boot-up, I get the lading screen, and a message telling me "no block devices found" . WTF is going on?

The laptop (a Toshiba Satellite 1800-S253) is about 8 years old, has only 128MB RAM, and I don't really know any of the other specs. My fiancee has graciously allowed me to appropriate it for my tabletop gaming usage. (BTW, totally off-topic, but D&D 4.0 is just WoW on paper.)

If anyone has any information that could assist me, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Okay, I'm a total newbie, but I insist on learning linux. I wanted to try it out onlive cd first, so I downloaded and burned Knoppix.

When I boot into Knoppix I get: "not enough memory to start kde, 82 mb required."

then: "using tmw windowmanager instead. Not all programs in the left-mousebutton-menu will work here."

I am running an Intel with2.70Ghz, 248 mb ram

Hd has 121 Gb free space.

Anyone have any suggestions?
Hey ,

I have Fedora core 3 but i had problems getting the CD-Burner to configure .. the CD drive was recognised yet it did not config. So i looked around a couple more distros and was told Knoppix should work ok, So i downloaded the lastest 3.6 Live-Eval and installed using Sudo Knoppix-Installer. The installation was a complete success the CD-Burner works and the sound works without any drivers, unlike windows which didnt work with the sound on the laptop. Now i have a problem "Knoppix does not ask for any user details what so ever. Now when i went to install the flash plugin I need the root password which I dont have as i never set one" Does anyone no if this is a standard thing and there is a standard password for it. Or how i can get around it and change it.
hi!

More frequently (for my work), i use XP because most Macromedia & Adobe developers don't make their products targeted towards linux-based communities (to my knowledge).

In a nutshell, my XP is temporarily "dead".

And (more then ever right now) Knoppix is the bestest thing in the whole wide world. B)

Only problem, is that i'm a complete linux N00B and because of my crazy schedule @ school i'm at a loss for copius time (or brianpower) to ingest mountainloads of linux FAQs & "How to" docs (though i am trying whenever i can!).

1.) How well can i trust Knoppix 3.36 by itself w/o a firewall (or does it have a built-in firewall? o.O)

2.) Is there an open-source firewall in the works or already out there?

3.) Besides just copying over files to my root dir (where i have my recently corpse-ified XP installed & since the data on my drive is still good with copius backups left to do!) how do i install Knoppix onto my system?

4.) Does installing a 2nd OS (i.e. Knoppix) conflict with an already-installed OS? Or am i now forced to resort to creating a partition for it?

5.) If argument = "true" to latter q.4.) , then is there a way to set up an "emergency activation of said "partition" in case of XP breakdown a 2nd, 3rd or 4th time" ? -or does that just happen in hollywood? o_O

6.) Is there decent CD-burning software on the Sourceforge/general open-source market?

7.) Is there a decent 5-in-1 instant messenger for the K! desktop?

8.) How do you extract stuff using "Ark" (for example) if you want to install kmerlin?

For now this'll be all... until i can figure out how to either get my XP back or how Knoppix or (more specifically) the "programming Linux commands" process works..

Thanx in advance!
i can complete qtparted and the installer. after everything is completed, i reboot.. nomatter which bootloader i use, and even the floppy disk will do the same, i get the same error. it looks like this:

mount: fs devfs not supported by kernel

unmount: devfs: not mounted

unmount: devfs: not mounted

pivot_root: no such file or directory

/sbin/init/: 426: cannot open dev/console: no such file

kernel panic: attempting to kill init!

i dont quite know what this means, i assume that it cant boot due to the fact that it cant see parts of the disk or the disk itself. also, when i boot up with the CD again, i can not mount the partition with knoppix installed on to it, even using the sudo command. perhapse i have to change all of the permissions on the disk first, but i wouldnt know how to preform a chmod command on a disk that i cant see. please help.

Hi,

I have a Maestro-3 Allegro-1 ESS1988 soundcard which works great in Knoppix.

However in Debian I keep getting "sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp': No such device" whenever it attempts to play sound.

So, I do a sndconfig and the following comes up:

"You don't seem to be running a kernel with modular sound enabled. (soundcore.o was not found in the

module search path). To use sndconfig, you must be running a kernel with modular sound, such as the kernel shipped with Red Hat Linux or a 2.2 or greater kernel."

When I do a "locate sound.o" I get the following:

/lib/modules/2.4.18-bf2.4/kernel/drivers/sound/sound.o

/usr/src/linux-2.6.5/sound/core/sound.o

/usr/src/linux-2.6.5/sound/core/.sound.o.cmd

I've recompiled the kernel for module support as well as sound (ALSA) support but still it doesn't work. I don't know what to do... please help!!!
