File handling in linux

Hi.... I'm karl. I'm working in unix for first time so i'm new to it. Right now, i'm using Ubuntu 10.04(lucid lynx).

I need help in opening, reading and writing files(Ascii or text). I want to seperate the contents of the original file in different files. Plz help

Yesterday I bought a new computer, it's a Acer-aspire one. I have got Linpus Linux Lite V1.0.15.E on it. This IM-chat thing that is om Linux really sucks. I would like to download aMsn to my computer, but I can't. Every time I try, I can save it, but I can't install it...One person told me that I have to have Ubuntu to be able to have aMsn. Is that true? If so, what will happen if I download ubuntu? I know that the design will change, but what about the content? Will the games and writing programs disappear?

Please help!

Ubuntu 8.04 Dual-Boot Issues (Windows XP)

Hello everybody, I'm not going to lie and say that I'm not new to all of this so I figure I'll just admit it.

Over the past couple of days I had some hard drive issues and thought this would be as good of time as any to try this whole Linux thing again... (had some issues with a Vista dual boot at one point in time absolutely hosing the drive, though that was Vista I'm fairly certain)

So I installed XP back on the new drive that I found but only partitioned 150 GB for XP. The remainder of it I left for a Linux Distro in this case Ubuntu 8.04. I used the rest of it during the Ubuntu install process. I then rebooted the computer and everything went downhill from there. I can get into Windows XP just fine, however whenever I try and boot into Ubuntu it gets to

running boot scripts local /etc/rc.local [OK]

but after that the screen will just turn black and sit there and do nothing else. The version that I select in Grub is

Ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel 2.6.24-21-generic

However the other options that are available are Ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel 2.6.24-21-generic (recovery mode), Ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel 2.6.24-19-generic and Ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel 2.6.24-19-generic (recovery mode) there is also a selection for Ubuntu 8.04.1, memtest86+

I'm assuming the last one is just to check the drive integrity. Any assistance would be great as I'd love to be able to actually use Ubuntu, but obviously cannot if I cannot get into the system itself.

OK, so this is a little bit of mindless self-promotion, but...

I've put together a printable two-sided guide to installing software under Ubuntu. It's aimed at the absolute beginner to Ubuntu, perhaps a switcher from Windows. It details how to download and install software from the Add/Remove Applications method as well as downloading .deb packages manually and installing them that way.

Problem with screen resolution in 8.04

Okay, so I installed Ubuntu 8.04 with WUBI and everything was fine except for one major detail: I wasn't able to select any resolution above 800x600 in the display settings (they just weren't there to select).

I figured this was because I didn't have the driver for my graphics card installed, so I let Ubuntu grab it for me and restarted my computer, but all this did was restrict me to either choosing between 320x240 or 640x480 resolution!

Here's the kicker, though: I uninstall 8.04 and install 7.04 (once again, with WUBI) and my resolution is fine, so this leads me to believe that 8.04 could be bugged when it comes to my graphics card.

Here's my rig:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+

XFX Nvidia GeForce 7950GT 512MB

2GB DDR2 4200 RAM

250GB HD

Soundblaster SB Live Soundcard

Come to think of it, I believe I had Ubuntu 8.04 64bit installed, I'll install the 32 bit version and see if the problem is there. In the mean time, though, any help would be appreciated!

Ubuntu Noob vs Error 17

Greetings all.

I'm brand new to Linux and I've hit my first (technically 2nd) big snag. After googling around and overcoming the wonderfully entertaining "Error 18" villain, I rebooted only to get the much more wicked "Grub Error 17" message. I've googled around and there almost doesn't seem to be any single answer on how to fix this. I've tried a few different things and nothing's working for me. I can run Ubuntu from my live CD just fine but every time I try something to fix it, I reboot and ol' "Error 17" smacks me in the face.

Help would be greatly appreciated and guarantee you some good computing karma I'm sure.

This is meant as at ip for people installing ubuntu on a computer with the Intel BG 2200 WLAN card.

Before you install Ubuntu on the computer, make sure that this WLAN is Enabeled in BiOS (Dafault should be ON, not off).

This will save you a lot of work later on.

After this do the following to save yourself a little work:

sudo gedit /etc/modules

Insert this line:

save and close.

Your card should work every time after this.

Black screen on boot

I just recently installed Feisty Fawn and did a bunch of installing, updating and so forth. It was after installing Nvidia files that upon boot-up, my screen goes black and won't continue on to anything. Any ideas?

Well, now I have tinkered a bit to much for my own good. When I try to boot I get these messages:

init: Unable to execute "/bin/sh" for rcS: No such file or directory

init: rcS main process (2397) terminated with status 255

I need a really noobish explanation on how to fix.

Hi, I'm a person who has dabbled with Ubuntu since Dapper Drake. I'm interested in learning Linux and I chose Ubuntu because it seemed like a distro I could use with the family computer. I enjoy Ubuntu, especially the latest release 7.04, but I can not switch completely because there are programs that I need Windows XP to run them (ex. Daemon Tools, some games, Adobe Flash, etc.). Currently, I have a dual-boot setup with Ubuntu on Partition 1 and Windows XP on Partition 2. Windows XP was already installed on the computer, so it was only a matter of installing Ubuntu. At first, I could easily switch between Windows XP and Ubuntu, but the next day I came back and suddenly I could no longer boot into Windows. On GRUB, Windows XP (SP2) appears as an option, but when I select it, it displays a message saying "Starting up.." with a blinking cursor then does nothing. I'm not sure what is causing this and I want to wait before I reinstall GRUB since I see that as a last resort.

Computer Specs:

model: HP Pavilion m7640n

Hard Drive size: 300 GB, SATA. The partitions are split in half, with a 500 MB swapfile. I did the partitiong through the GUI installer.

Video Card: NVidia 6100 Integrated

Memory: 2 GB

Windows XP version: SP2
