Wireless Networks

I am new to Linux, I have Ubuntu, Is there an addin that can be used to locate wireless networks? And configure them?

Basically I've attempted to find the networks which I know are there and I continue to recieve the message

 

~$ iwconfig

lo no wireless extensions.

 

eth0 no wireless extensions.

 

pan0 no wireless extensions.

 

 

 

iwlist scan

lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

 

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

 

pan0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

hi what wireless card have you got in this machine ?

 

try lspci to list your pci devices or if its usb, try lsusb

 

paste the results here

Thanks, I am still trying to figure out everything with this system....I converted my HP Pavilion over about a week ago. any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

here's what i got

 

 

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

 

in addition to the wireless not working i only have one of three usb ports working. i am trying to learn more about how these things function and whatnot, so that when i do encounter problems like this i know what is wrong and how to fix them. i'm definitely a noob though.
