debian librairies install AND xbt trouble connection refused
#1

hi guys :))))

so, here i am , i hope i finally found the right place for some help,

its been hours and hours am looking for someone to help on my debian vps :)))))

SO, am installing a tracker, xbt tracker,

i dont really know if i installed it correctly, but, seems yes,

seems ! the point is, in fact, i cannot start it, i can see the announce log table is empty,

so i guess i did something wrong,

AND in addtion i got this error message in utorrent :

connection refused by the target machine, arrgghhhhhhhh !!!!!!!

* i checked my firewall, there are no rules, so it does allow all traffic

i went to the xbt forums for help, they told me : go away, its your server configuration,

great help, loll .......

so am here, in the hope someone will help me for real :))))

i use a gazelle frontend, the frontend is running fine as far as i used it ( 2 days )

i looked at many different tutorials up to install and configure xbt tracker,

i installed libraires, put the xbt folder along with my site folders, ....

well.

one fact i see, is this one :::::

======================

SO i found this article there :

http://filesharefrea...a-debian-server

so i ssh this :

cd to the folder where is xbt/build/

and typied this : ./autogen.sh

and the result is this :

./autogen.sh

Running aclocal...

Running autoheader...

Running autoconf...

Running libtoolize --automake...

Running automake...

Running ./configure ...

configure: creating cache config.cache checking for a BSD-compatible

install... /usr/bin/install -c checking whether build environment is sane... yes

checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p checking for gawk... no

checking for mawk...

mawk checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes

checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no

checking for g++... g++ checking whether the C++ compiler works... no

configure: error: in `/home/ ............................. xbt/build/xbtt':

configure: error: C++ compiler cannot create executables

See `config.log' for more details

seems something is wrong on my server , right ? c++ compiler ? g++ c++ ?

SEEMS i cannot JUST untar the xbt tracker and put it to my ftp like this ?

i do have to compile it ? but i got no c++ compiler installed, right ?

boiooooooooooooooo am lost guys

i really need help

:)))))))))))))))

my test site is here : top-underground.net

so seems i cannot start the xbt, if its not compiled, but what is compiled ? lollll

its not enough to unrar, or untar and put the file to the ftp ?

its not enough to configure the config file with the sql infos ?

xbt tables are in place, config file seems ok, tracker server name is well defined,

my host guys did it for me, so its tracker.top-underground.net

utorrent find the host, lol, but the connection is refused,

so would it be, due to the fact i did not compile the xbt tracker ?

arrrfffffffffffffff :))))))))))))))))

No. It's written in C++ so requires compiling. You're thinking of trackers written in PHP (or some other scripting languages) that can just be extracted and dropped into place.

XBT will require three steps to get it going:

<ol style="list-style-type: decimal">
[*]compilation of the source into binary executable

[*]configuration of the service itself

[*]starting (and monitoring) the service.

</ol>

Firstly, have you managed to compile it correctly? Check the README file that came with it - there should be some information there.

Secondly, if you HAVE configured it.. where did you instruct it to write logfiles to? Do tose shed any light as to what's going on? Have you tried the "netstat" command to see if your configured port is open?

It seems so, if there's nothing listening on the port you specified.

Again, check your logfiles then post back - something should be a bit more obvious in those.

hey mornin Dungeon-Dave !!!

haaaaaaaaaaaaaa finally someone is answering somewhere, and its HERE, coz i tried a few forum and noones answered :)))

so FIRST many thanks fot answering :)))))))))

SO i understand much better NOW, ok ok this xbt tracker must be compiled, i thought not, because in the release i got,

there are 3 folders ALREADY : bin, buld & lib, so i though it was already compiled, arrfff

SO this means i must miss something on my server coz i cannont compile, but lets talk about this point later.

HERE the netstat RESULT :::::::::::::::::::::::::

Have you tried the instructions on that site that first mention:

Code:
apt-get install cmake g++ libboost-date-time-dev libboost-dev \
libboost-filesystem-dev libboost-program-options-dev libboost-regex-dev \
libboost-serialization-dev libmysqlclient15-dev make subversion zlib1g-dev

in fact, at the very beginning i found gazelle, i started on another tutorial, this one :::

http://www.bvlist.com/gazelle/2359-how-s...erver.html

and talking with you, facing to my present troubles, am wondering about whatr i could do wrong

$ apt-get install build-essential apache2 php5 libapache2-mod-php5 mysql-server libmysqlclient15-dev php5-mysql memcached php5-memcache php5-gd php5-mcrypt subversion automake

$ apt-get install cmake g++ libboost-date-time-dev libboost-dev libboost-filesystem-dev libboost-program-options-dev libboost-regex-dev libboost-serialization-dev make zlib1g-dev

i DID NOT those, because of my vps was already installed with a few packages, AND nobody was there at my host to help me,

in case i COULD break down my vps

i got several very important websites hosted on this small server,

and i could not take the risk to put my others sites down for a long time,

IN CASE i could put my server down by ssh those :))))

SO, what do you advice me ?

SHould i try to restart from the very beginning ?

do i risk to put my server down, on any way, if i restart from the beginning ?

you know those small vps are unmanaged ... if i put my server down doin a big mistake,

they will charge me 200$ to rebuild it ! when i only pay 20$ a month, and cannot afford more than 20buxs

its because am a very very poor guy, i MUST go step by step,

if my others sites run down, am dead, arrrfffffff

on another hand, this would be the better way, restarting from the beginning ...

haaaaaaaaaaaa lalaaaaaaa

COULD i ssh some command, dat will show up all installed packages ???

AND THIS WAY, we could discover, wich one i miss ?

the other probleme with gazelle, is there are DIFFERENT tutorial, NOT telling the same procedure to run gazelle,

arrrgghhhhh

If you are running a managed server and don't have access to install those packages, at least run "dpkg" to check they're installed - that should tell you if your compilation is running into errors due to unsatisfied prerequisites.

Secondly, that Visigod tutorial isn't completely accurate: you need root-level access simply to install those packages, but you shouldn't really be compiling and running XBT as root. They just seem to be doing everything as root for the convenience of not having to worry about permissions now, but it introduces huge security holes later.

If you want to install those packages but fear for breaking your host, it may be an idea to raise a support ticket to get them installed for you. At least then the support people can safely install without breaking existing functionality.

One last point: have you considered building a local Debian test rig and trying it out on that first? If something breaks then it does so safely without bringing down your VPS. At least it gives you the chance of practising some of these commands out first before trying out the "real thing" on your live server.

Use

Code:
dpkg -l | grep PACKAGENAME

- the "-l" (lower L) should "list" packages, and "grep" will pull out specific ones, eg:

Code:
user@logan:~$ dpkg -l | grep zen
ii  zenity        2.32.0-0ubuntu1     Display graphical dialog boxes from shell scripts
