How do you remove those "tabs" on top of the window, I've never had these before, but now they suddenly appeared when I reinstalled my system?

I've changed session.tabs: true to session.tabs: false in my init file, but they were still there.
On a lot of screenshots, this for example:

https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/uploads/p...-1131153963.png

I've seen a small menu-bar like that on OSX, this screenshot seems to be fluxbox, which I currently use,

since I don't have it, I assume it's some other program providing it, like idesk (?) for desctop icons..

Wherther my assumption is true or not, what's it called and how do I get it?
Ok, so you want to use nautilus for your file manager in fluxbox. simply install nautilus and add the following command to your fluxbox menu: nautilus --no-desktop... Now you are using nautilus as the file manager, problem is it was made for gnome. There is an easy solution if you see nautilus stop working... Simply killall nautilus ( i've added this also to my flux menu ). Then you can use nautilus --no-desktop and it should work fine....
I have built a working rpm for fluxbox 0.1.14 for fedora. I was able to successfully install and run the newest fluxbox on fedora core1 with it. http://grep420.net/rpms/fluxbox-0.1.14-1.i386.rpm.

If your default runlevel is 5 you need to add the session to dm. Here is an example of my session file. Make sure it is chmod 755 as well.

[root@xwing jsw34]# cat /etc/X11/dm/Sessions/fluxbox.desktop

[Desktop Entry]

Encoding=UTF-8

Name=Fluxbox

Type=Application

Icon=

Exec=/usr/local/bin/fluxbox

[root@xwing jsw34]# ls -al /etc/X11/dm/Sessions/fluxbox.desktop
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root           95 Jan  7 12:19 /etc/X11/dm/Sessions/fluxbox.desktop

For those of you with default runlevel 3, then you need to create an .xinitrc file in your home dir.

[jsw34@bullpen jsw34]$ cat ~/.xinitrc

#!/bin/bash

/usr/local/bin/fluxbox

don't forget to chmod +x ~/.xinitrc

so here is the howto direct from fluxbox

How do I add fluxbox to my sessions menu in Fedora.

The fedora distribution uses a different setup again. Instead of the dm-specific locations, it requires session files to be in /etc/X11/dm/Sessions.

So, to get Fluxbox into its session menu, create the file: /etc/X11/dm/Sessions/fluxbox with contents:

[Desktop Entry]

Encoding=UTF-8

Name=Fluxbox

Type=Application

Icon=

Exec=fluxbox

You may need to put the full path to fluxbox in the Exec line if it is in a non-standard location.

This is a barebones entry. Hopefully one day we will be able to make a version with translations available in the main source distribution.
I've installed fluxbox (http://www.fluxbox.org) in Red Hat 9 and Red Hat 8.0 and for those of you who haven't tried it yet perhaps now is the time

If you want to install Fluxbox in Fedora then read this instead

Fluxbox is perfect for those with old video cards... and new video cards too

To installl Fluxbox in Red Hat 9 (or 8.0) do this:-

First go here (click on the link)

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/fluxbox...x-0.1.14.tar.gz

Once you are done, gunzip it and then untar it to some local folder.

cd to the folder you have untar'd it in and do this:-

./configure

then login as su and do

make

then

make install

Now you probably want to add fluxbox to the 'session' part of your login screen in Red Hat 9.

To do that, login as su and do:-

cd /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions

cp GNOME Fluxbox

vi Fluxbox

Leave the first line alone and change the second line so that it now just reads

exec fluxbox

save by doing

:w

:q

Logout of Gnome (or whatever) and now, at the graphical login screen click on 'sessions' you'll see Fluxbox listed there alongside Gnome/Kde etc...

then

make install

Now you probably want to add fluxbox to the 'session' part of your login screen in Red Hat 9.

To do that, login as su and do:-

cd /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions

cp GNOME Fluxbox

vi Fluxbox

Leave the first line alone and change the second line so that it now just reads

exec fluxbox

save by doing

:w

:q

Logout of Gnome (or whatever) and now, at the graphical login screen click on 'sessions' you'll see Fluxbox listed there alongside Gnome/Kde etc...
