How To Get Xscreensaver Properly Running in KDE Environment |

I've been having a lot of headaches with the screensaver in my Suse 10.1 installation using KDE. Sometimes the screensaver would work, other times it wouldn't. Sometimes it would fade in/out in a cool effect, sometimes it wouldn't (I'll show you that little trick as well).
For the most part, I think I got it covered, and I'd like to share how I managed to 'fix' it up a little by reading a FAQ from the xscreensaver site:
Quote:Instead of using the usual xscreensaver mechanisms, the KDE folks have chosen to roll their own screen saver wrapper that is inferior to the xscreensaver-demo way of doing things in any number of ways.
The only sensible (and secure) way to use a screen saver under KDE is to turn off KDE's built-in screen saver, and use xscreensaver instead. How you go about this is explained in the "Using KDE" section of the xscreensaver manual.
The GNOME people used to have the same class of bugs as the KDE folks now have, but the GNOME crew finally came to their senses, and we worked together to come up with a solution that resulted in their being one and only one xscreensaver configurator, instead of two: mine and theirs.
Will the KDE people wise up and do the same? Only time will tell. I encourage you to encourage them.
Here are the steps that I took to resolve it. It's not very tricky, so this shouldn't take a lot of time at all.
1.) I opened "Personal Settings" (AKA "Control Center" Located in "My System" in the KDE Launcher or Kicker).
2.) Then I clicked on "Appearance and Themes".
3.) Then I clicked on "Screensaver" and disabled the screensaver by unchecking "Start Automatically".
4.) I closed the "Personal Settings" window and opened up the "Run Command" by pressing ALT+F2.
5.) I typed in "xscreensaver-demo" to open up the true xscreensaver wrapper.
6.) I picked out my favorite screensaver (XAnalogTV) and then set the time to be "Blank After" 3 minutes and then exited the "xscreensaver-demo" program.
Ta-da! Finished. Now at least the screensaver should work a little better!
There has been some note to add a file called xscreensaver.desktop to your /home/[username]/.kde/Autostart directory with this as it's contents (I can't confirm or deny that this step is needed):
Code: [Desktop Entry]
Exec=xscreensaver
Name=XScreensaver
Type=Application
X-KDE-StartupNotify=false
Now for the Fade in/out trick. It's a lot easier than you would imagine, but it sure adds a nice touch to the desktop.
1.) Open the "xscreensaver-demo" window again by using ALT+F2 and typing in "xscreensaver-demo".
2.) Click on the "Advanced" tab next to "Display Modes"
3.) In the "Fading and Color Maps" section of this tab, make sure that the proper options are checked. The rest is self explainatory I believe.

Fedora Core Release 1 Yarrow |

I work at a school that has the following setup
Cable Modem
with ethernet going into
Dell Computer running Fedora Core Release 1
from which one ethernet goes to a machine running windows server 2003
and another ethernet cable goes to a different machine running windows server 2003
These two servers are the domain controllers for the Teachers and Students servers
The servers have completely different IP addresses (one is 192.168.xxx.xxx and the other is 172.27.27.xxx)
This system has been running for a few years with no one taking care of it. The last IT person who knew how to use this system (a teacher) left on bad terms apparently, and did not leave any of the log in information behind. Since he left, another IT person has come and gone, but they never had anything to do with the Fedora machine, they only knew how to log into the two Windows Server 2003 systems.
The school is now involved in an international project called Rock Our World (www.rockourworld.org) which requires iChat to be used so classes around the world can communicate.
At home, the Apple iBook connects to iChat (using AIM) instantly. There are no problems. At work, it is not able to connect. I imagine this is a firewall problem.
I plugged the iBook directly into the Cable Modem at work (disabling the Internet connection for the rest of the school) and iChat worked right away. I then connected the iBook to one of the ethernet cables coming out of the machine running Fedora and iChat wouldn't connect. This happened again when I tried the other ethernet cable. This leads me to believe that the Fedora machine (which I know nothing about) is blocking the ports that iChat needs to see outside. Is Fedora operating as a firewall for the system?
I have been trying to figure out what on earth to do... The Fedora computer's monitor is just a bunch of numbers (mac addresses etc). When I try to type something, a log in prompt comes up. Sadly, I do not know what username or password to use. It is impossible to get this information. I have never had any exposure to Fedora or Linux before, but there has got to be some solution...
Does anyone have any suggestions? A lot of kids will be pretty thrilled if this gets figured out.
Thanks,
R. Johnson

Hello!
As promised, we have pushed FC6 prerelease images to the trackers:
http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/
The following install-blocking bugs have been tested and should be fixed
in these images:
#206876: GRUB claims initrd is too big for memory on x86_64
#206453: installed x86_64/ppc system missing initrd, cannot boot
#206202: Anaconda traceback during lvcreate on ppc64
#206913: Anaconda exception on upgrade from FC5
#208080: ahci/ata_piix mixup causes Anaconda to not find SATA disks
This is not a complete list of bugs fixed, just some of the most
troublesome installer bugs from Test3.
There *is* a known bug when trying to install using Fedora Extras in
this release. Luckily we already have a fix for it that you can use with
these images! Just follow the directions here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Anaconda/Updates
You can get the update image from here:
[url=http://people.redhat.com/~katzj/updates-fc6pre.img]http://people.redhat.com/~katzj/updates-fc6pre.img
This will also help us test the Anaconda Update code, so if you're
thinking of using Extras, please give it a shot!
Another note: the keyboard won't work in firstboot. The mouse is fine,
though, so you can click your way through. I believe we already have a
fix for this, but it just didn't make it in time for this release.
Enjoy the updated images, and happy testing. Be sure to keep your
newly-installed FC6pre systems up to date and keep on testing as we make
the final push towards the release of FC6!
