mysql and hyperthreading |

We all know Intel hyped this hyperthreading BS.. now there are some application that actually get improved performance with it on.. most things really don't though.. and even are slower with it on. In all my tests.. mysql is one of them. I used mysql bench and the standard /etc/my.cnf that comes installed with the rpms
HT on
Code: alter-table: Total time: 11 wallclock secs ( 0.06 usr 0.03 sys + 0.00 cusr 0.00 csys = 0.09 CPU)

TOTALS 1257.00 319.99 108.41 428.40 3425950
doing the math.. we see that mysql with HT off performs almost 6-7% better. So if you are looking to run a high volume SQL server.. turn HT off!

*@"!ING WINDOWS!!!!! |

Im really gonna need some help here if im not gonna end up paying another $150 to Microsoft FOR MY THIRD GODDAMN COPY OF WINDOWS.
Basically, my windows computer was OEM, i won it at a raffle, and someone set it up like a complete jackass. In light of this, and the fact i was completely overwhelmed with spyware, adware, and trojans, i decided to reformat my drive and reinstall. Pretty basic, shouldnt have been a problem. It wasnt, until it asked for my Product code, which I have, right on the side of the box (i never got a sheet of paper, but it shoudl be the same right?), and windows just says invalid cdkey or something like it.
now when i boot with ANY boot disks, in the drive, even when i take the hard drive off of bios for booting, IT STILL GOES TO WINDOWS WHERE IT REJECTS BOTH MY LEGIT KEYS. Im downloading the Fedora core right now, but ive got a feeling i wont be able to do anything with it once i get it, since this goddamn windows installer overrides anyother boot disk i put in my comp.
In sum: I had a version of windows freaking out on me so bad i had to reformat my drive, then it wouldnt let me install it, even though i rightfully own TWO copies of windows. Now this is the kicker, now i cant install any other OS, so im left with a really fancy box that M$ has taken a big old shit on.
I'm about to tear my hair out, when i asked M$ support (with one of my two free tech supports) they just told me i cant install my windows on two computers. BULLSHIT, they didnt even bother to read my whole email, besides, this freshly formatted harddrive was never on the internet, and previously had this windows on it. there is no way this computer would be aware of another computer that used that key, EVEN if there were one, which there isnt.
Im getting allittle of topic here, and just venting my INFINATE FRUSTRATION, but if anyone could give me some advice that would help me get out of this hole (so i can boot off a Fedora disk and if you could, tell me how to deal with my product id problem so i could do a dual boot.)
Thanks to anyone who read my whole POST OF ANGER!

I'm installing Fedora Core 5 as a web server.
I need to access NTFS drives on my computer because i'm working with Adobe Photoshop.
I've followed several instructions to mount NTFS partitions on my computer but the "mount" command always response "unknown file system ntfs" (or something like that).
I've followed the instructions in two sites:
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-fc5.html#ntfs
http://www.stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_...notes.html#NTFS
Am i doing something wrong???

My old computer (667 megahertz), running Win 98se, keeps freezing while surfing so my son loaded Mandrake 9.2 to check if the problem was hardware or software. Freezing continued -- in fact started freezing even off the Internet, even freezes in KDE Help, for pete's sake.
But I like this linux and want to try using it. I want to change my start page so went to Settings then Configure Konqueror then typed in a new home URL. Yes, pressed Apply and OK but same old start page persists. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hey, I just recently installed FC4 on my small server, and it seems that the imagemagic, or the GD-lib wasnt installed :(.
Is there a way to add this lib to apache without reinstalling? I also dont have internet connected to the server, so i probably got to download stuff and apply it?
Im just using the box for making webpages and scripts, and i got to an stop when i could not use the imagetools :\
I dunno how to describe this problem any better but i bet you understand it? (or what, znx?)
Heh.

Can't Install from DOS. Please help me. |

HI. My lapotop has no floppy, no cd-rom, no network, can't boot from usb.
So my only way is installing from dos using Loadlin.exe.
While in windows, i created
a) 4.5gb ext.2 partition for Slackware
B) 500mb swap linux partition
c) temporary 2gb fat32 partition - i extracted there contents of both 2 installation .iso files (10.2 version) - so that it would be accessible from dos and from setup.
Here's what i did:
1) I copied bzimage file to c:\ (c is fat32). I took bzimage file from BareAcpi.I directory on cd1
2) I copied initrd.img file to c:\ from \isolinux direcotry on cd1
3)Start Win98, At the very beginning press F8, and choose "command prompt only"
4) Started Loadlin, using this command:
Code: loadlin.exe c:\bareacpi\bzimage initrd=c:\initrd.img root=/dev/ram rw load_ramdisk=1
Here is what i get:
Code: .....
...
..
Uncompressing Linux...
invalid compressed format (err=1)
--System halted
I took this parameters from some guide on loadlin.
I also tried some other parameters, but notheing works.
I'm newbie in linux.
PLEASE HELP ME.

Getting rid of GRUB |

Hi
I fully installed Ubuntu Breezy onto my computer as my Windows ME seemed to fail on me. I tried to work in Ubuntu but found it to difficult and I stumbled across the Recovery Disk and Master Disks to restore my system back to ME. I ran these disks and after the remastering has finished.. upon loading the hard drive.. i get GRUB trying to load up. I get about 2 minutes of "GRUB GRUB" running down my screen and then eventually "GRUB FAILED". Does anyone know how to get rid of the grub system. I have tried formatting my hard drive via the Restore disk and then ran the remastering but found the same problems.
At the moment I have a very nice empty box of a computer... please help me get back to the dreary Windows Millenium Edition days.

Fedora Core release 5 Extras |

this is inspired by the very useful post from Randall for Fedora core release 4 extras
as root (su -) install the current livna rpm to get access to livna's goodies
Code: rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/5/i386/livna-release-5-4.noarch.rpm
now let's add freshrpm's to that list
Code: rpm -ivh http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/5/i386/RPMS.freshrpms/freshrpms-release-1.1-1.fc.noarch.rpm
let's install the MP3 plugins
Code: yum -y install xmms-mp3 gstreamer-plugins-mp3 libmad libid3tag
for CD ripping, you can use grip so lets install it
next up, lets install the Flash plugin
use vi to create a new file
Code: vi /etc/yum.repos.d/flash.repo
now copy the below and paste it into the file
Quote:[macromedia]name=Macromedia for i386 Linuxbaseurl=http://macromedia.mplug.org/rpm/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://macromedia.mplug.org/FEDORA-GPG-KEY
save the file with :wq
Code: yum -y install flash-plugin
Next up for multimedia action and DVD playing we will install xine
Code: yum -y install xine xine-lib xine-skins
and a Fedora install would not be complete without my favorite video player mplayer, so let's install it
Code: yum -y --disablerepo=livna install mplayer mplayer-skins mplayer-fonts
and now we'll install the windows codecs for mplayer
Code: wget http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/essential-20050412.tar.bz2
gtar xjvf essential-20050412.tar.bz2
mkdir /usr/local/lib/win32
mv essential-20050412/* /usr/local/lib/win32
now we need to install the mplayer plugin for web browsers
Code: yum -y install mplayerplug-in
To install Java, open your web browser (asaa normal user, eg: anyweb) and paste in the following link
http://jdl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=10148
save the file locally.
Make the file executable
Code: chmod +x jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586-rpm.bin
and 'run' it
Code: ./jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586-rpm.bin
now as root, lets install the extracted rpm...
notice the path below to /home/anyweb/Desktop
that's where I downloaded the file above
Quote:[root@localhost ~]# rpm -ivh /home/anyweb/Desktop/jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.rpmPreparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:jre ########################################### [100%]
now lets patch the internal refs to java with some symbolic links
Code: unlink /usr/bin/java
ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_04/bin/java /usr/bin/java
ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_04/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
now to verify that Java is installed correctly in firefox in the address bar type
scroll down until you see the lenghty Java references !
that's it
have fun :)
cheers

Suse and the web |

I've encountered a strange problem with Suse 10 and the internet. Whenever I try to connect to a website, there's always a 20-30 second delay before loading the site. Even after the site is loaded, it lags pretty bad. This happens with Mozilla, konqueror, and firefox. I also tried the gnome desktop, but to no avail. Same Problem. Now, here's the catch. When I load windows in VMware inside of suse, the windows version of firefox does NOT have the same problem, even thought it's using the Suse internet connection. Again, dubya tee eff?
