  Access My Jump-Drive
Posted by: Navrax - 2006-03-08, 05:34 AM - Forum: Filesystem Management - Replies (1)

I have a 128MB Lexar Jump Drive that I can't access from my winbox because I shared it once and everytime I try and access it the system just hangs. Lame. I want to access it on my linux box but I forget how. I did it once before, and all I can remember is it has something to do with a 'by-id' folder.

If anybody knows it would be greatly appreciated. Maybe after I mount my jump-drive someone will help me set it up in fstab! :)

  vnc Problem
Posted by: Navrax - 2006-03-07, 05:36 PM - Forum: Remote Access - Replies (1)

I'll start ssh

Code:
/etc/init.d/sshd start

Then, from my winbox I'll start PuTTY, load my vnc settings ( The forwarded ports, etc) then I'll open and log into my box via ssh. Yay! BUT, when I open vncviewer on windows, and try and open localhost:1 it just hangs! Normally I would get dialogue to input a password to vnc! :(

note:

I use tightvnc. I do it through ssh.

For some idiotic reason I ended ssh with pkill. After that, I was having trouble starting it up.

Code:
/etc/init.d/sshd zap /etc/init.d/sshd start *Starting sshd...

The above code fixed it. But other than ending sshd with pkill I also pkilled Xvnc, which ended all the vnc stuff. That's where i'm confused.

Could that be why I can't vnc from my winbox? I could before! The only reason I can think of is that I pkilled it.

Any tips ? I can't vnc to my box I messed up! Gah!

  Nautlius question
Posted by: hybrid - 2006-03-07, 04:55 PM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 5 - Replies (2)

I've just installed Fedora Core Test 3 and it seems that by default the file manager opens a new window for each folder opened. I've looked through Edit > Preferences, but not being a regular GNOME user I don't know where this option is (or what it's called).

Could anyone point me in the right direction? [img]<___base_url___>/uploads/emoticons/default_rolleyes.gif[/img]

Fedora 5 does look absolutely awesome, though, I love the new logo and the logon screen :) Will it replace SUSE? :)

  Installing Linux Fedora
Posted by: Grim - 2006-03-07, 01:11 AM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 4 - Replies (7)

Well, I've download and burned the i386 version of Fedora Core 4 for one of my older computers. For some reason I can't get it to boot from the disc at startup. I know it is the computer for sure because I can get the disc to load the boot screen on another computer. I was just wondering if maybe someone had any ideas as to what might be wrong. I've went into the BIOS to make sure it loads from the CDROM but for some reason I don't think it even trys...Is there a Linux Boot Disk or something I could put on a floppy to just force it to try to read from the CDROM. I've actually put in the older win 98 boot disk and with CDROM support in and tried to get it to read the disk that way and... I don't know if you need to know anything that would better help you understand the situation I'll be more then willing to provide it. The computer has Pentium 4 1.8Ghz and 256MB FYI.

Just wanted to say hello to everyone!

I have been reading around the forums a bit mostly topics such as "What distro to download" and I finally decided to try out Fedora. I'm not sure what to think of Linux so I'm going to install it on another computer for now. You will be seeing me post some easy(Atleast easy for most of you) questions around the forums and any response to them you can give in advanced are most apprecaited. Also, I'll be joining you in IRC sometime to see whats up. Looking forward to what Linux can do and hopefully a helpful guide. :/

Linux noob,

Grim

  host ap problem
Posted by: yokosucks - 2006-03-06, 03:06 PM - Forum: Wireless - No Replies

using a linksys WPC11 (rtl8180 chipset) with the stock drivers that came with opensuse 10. it goes into master mode OK, and after being brought up with ifconfig, it can be seen with kismet from another machine. i edited an iptables example masq rc.firewall and loaded it manually. i then set up the AP on the compaq laptop as so:

Code:
iwconfig wlan0 mode master iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys iwconfig wlan0 key off iwconfig wlan0 channel 6 ifconfig wlan0 192.168.2.1

this gives me resulting code from ifconfig and iwconfig (respectively):

Code:
linux:~ # ifconfig wlan0 wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0F:66:72:ED:3C inet addr:192.168.2.1 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::20f:66ff:fe25:af0b/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:1044 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1661 errors:690 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:57993 (56.6 Kb) TX bytes:87376 (85.3 Kb) Interrupt:11 Memory:c4eb4000-c4eb4100 linux:~ # iwconfig wlan0 wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"linksys" Mode:Master Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:0F:66:72:ED:3C Bit Rate=11 Mb/s Retry:on Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Link Quality=30/100 Signal level=-31 dBm Noise level=-186 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

then i set up my other laptop with this:

Code:
ifconfig eth1 down iwconfig eth1 essid linksys iwconfig eth1 key off ifconfig eth1 192.168.2.199 route add default gw 192.168.2.1 route ping -c 3 www.yahoo.com

route hangs for 20 seconds, spits out something, hangs for antoher 15 seconds and spits out some more, then exits. ping hangs.

i do the same with ifconfig and iwconfig on the client laptop:

Code:
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:90:21:42:FE:2D inet addr:192.168.2.199 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::202:2dff:fe93:7bd3/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:29 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:33 errors:565 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:4532 (4.4 Kb) TX bytes:34492 (33.6 Kb) Interrupt:3 Base address:0x100 eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"linksys" Nickname:"HERMES I" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.457 GHz Access Point: 44:44:44:44:44:44 Bit Rate:11 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity:1/3 Retry limit:4 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality=0/92 Signal level=134/153 Noise level=134/153 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

note the access point value in iwconfig of eth1. also note the link quality value.

i'm stumped. is it the card? is it the driver? is it... me? am i stupid? please help.
