Sound works in Knoppix but not in Debian |

Hi,
I have a Maestro-3 Allegro-1 ESS1988 soundcard which works great in Knoppix.
However in Debian I keep getting "sox: Can't open output file '/dev/dsp': No such device" whenever it attempts to play sound.
So, I do a sndconfig and the following comes up:
"You don't seem to be running a kernel with modular sound enabled. (soundcore.o was not found in the
module search path). To use sndconfig, you must be running a kernel with modular sound, such as the kernel shipped with Red Hat Linux or a 2.2 or greater kernel."
When I do a "locate sound.o" I get the following:
/lib/modules/2.4.18-bf2.4/kernel/drivers/sound/sound.o
/usr/src/linux-2.6.5/sound/core/sound.o
/usr/src/linux-2.6.5/sound/core/.sound.o.cmd
I've recompiled the kernel for module support as well as sound (ALSA) support but still it doesn't work. I don't know what to do... please help!!!

Help with Firestarter firewall/router in Fedora |

Hi everyone. I posted earlier about not being able to get online with Fedora. After a lot of help in #fedora on Efnet, I've been able to set it up.
Now I've got 2 NICs in the fedora box and am running it as a firewall/router for my LAN. I configured my XBox and can connect on XBox live, my XP machine can surf and play games, almost everything is good.
The problem right now is that eth1 (internal) keeps going Inactive for no apparent reason. I can hit activate in the network configuration window and everything works just fine, but it will eventually turn itself back to inactive, and the LAN cant use the net. Is this a software problem, or should I replace the NIC?
The other issue I'm having is configuring Outlook XP to work through Firestarter. I've set my send/recieve servers to the IP address instead of a hostname, but I still can't send or recieve mail. I've allowed all services to run through Firestarter. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks again.

Ok I have Red Hat 8 on 1 harddrive and XP on another. I want to duel boot without having to reinstall XP. Is this possible? Also I am wanting to try other Linux distros with this same setup.

My name is James Taylor, no not the singer. I am 31 and live here in Utah with my wife and 2 kids, Sarah (3) and Karen (1 month). I am in the USAF and work with Munitions (bombs, missiles, bullets, etc...). Been doing this from 12 years now with only 8 to go until I retire.
Well I guess you can say I am an one of old timers when it comes to computers. Got my first computer in Oct 95 and I still have pieces of it laying around. Infact my Linux Box is using the 4X CD Rom.
I know windows inside and out. At work everyone come to me for help fixing their home computers and work computer due to the fact the computer guys here suck. And now my Dad and brother keep bothering me with their problems.
I have worked with Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, XP Home and Pro, Dos 6.22 and Unix. At work, about 5 years ago, I work with Unix on a AT&T 3B2 system for the USAF. At that point I tried Slackware. That wasn't the easest thing to do with only 1 computer when you need help. Well thanks to Leo who is on TechTV's The Screen Savers I downloaded and install Red Hat 8. Man it is so easy.
Now I am a gamer so I depend on Windows to get my daily fix. If they would make games I like (BF 1942, Nascar 2003, and Joint Ops) for Linux I would change my Desktop over to Linux.

Here's a command that shows your public IP, no matter whether you're behind a router: :)
Code: wget -q www.whatismyip.com && grep displaycopy index.html|cut -d\' -f2 && rm -f index.html
