looks like they have rpms for the new kde 3.2. The one review i read of it was good. I still won't use it though :)

Hello,

I have a 98 Machine and I Linux Fedora machine. I can see the linux machine in my windows network neighborhood but when I double click on it this error keeps coming up. "The computer or shared name could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly and try again." I know it is a Samba setting that is wrong but I am new to Linux and need some help.

Thanks Joe W :(

The Quest for a movie player..
Posted by: Lem0 - 2004-02-04, 10:28 PM - Forum: Audio and Video - Replies (10)

My number one grievance with having converted to linux is that I can't seem to get to my videos.

Here's how far I've progressed so far:

- downloaded divx and unpacked it to a folder

- tried in vain to install divx with "./configure && make && make install"

- downloaded various parts of mplayer, a promising-looking app with codecs that runs off rpms

- installed all packs it calls for to be able to run:

-- mplayer-vidix-nvidia-1.0pre3.20040125-0.1

-- mplayer-1.0pre3.20040125-0.1

-- mplayer-vidix-1.0pre3.20040125-0.1

-- mplayer-codecs-win32-1.1-1

-- mplayer-common-1.0pre3.20040125-0.1

-- mplayer-codecs-win32-mjpeg2k-1.0-1

Here are my obstacles:

- divx doesnt have a config file to run, "make" returns a no target found, and "make install" only turns "install.sh" into "install" --both of which copy files to a few directories but not in a way i can call divx from a command line

- mplayer returns one warning and one error when i call it from console:

--

Code:
Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes
CPUflags:  MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 1 3DNow2: 1 SSE: 0 SSE2: 0
Compiled with Runtime CPU Detection - WARNING - this is not optimal!
To get best performance, recompile MPlayer with --disable-runtime-cpudetection.

--

Code:
vo: X11 running at 1024x768 with depth 24 and 32 bpp (":0.0" => local display)
It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.
Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support and read DOCS/HTML/en/devices.html#xv!
See 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers. Try -vo x11
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

It is a rather ardous and tedious task, but believe me when I say that I would not have posted it if I had means to solve it on my own...

:)

Oldest distro around ? yes.

Best distro around ? Oh yes.

Most misunderstood distro around? Hell yes.

Give it a try - you might find it quite surprising.

How to get Gnome and Enlightenment co-existing?
Posted by: bstevenson - 2004-02-03, 07:58 PM - Forum: Xorg Problems - Replies (1)

I've just done a clean install of RedHat 9 and I've only chosen to install GNOME (as KDE gets grumpy about not being a WM) - I was wondering how I can install Enlightenment so that it will be my WM, but GNOME still acting as my desktop. I did it years ago (circa 1999) - but so much has changed since then.

Any ideas? :(

I have set up my network connections in red hat. I am able to ping in both directions.

I can not seem to login from w2k box and get needed file on red hat box.

My w2k box is set up as a work group. I believe i my not have the host(s) set up correctly on the red hat 9 box. My red hat book offers little help.

Thanks!

  red hat updates
Posted by: sneaker - 2004-02-03, 01:29 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (2)

I had purchased red hat 9 back in dec of 03. I puchased a new box and told that all hardware in the box was suported by red hat 9, it was not. So i have now installed in a different box which has all of its' hardware supported by red hat .

My problem is that my 30 day basic support ran out and i can not afford to purchase a new service contract. I would like to know if there are any sites/mirrors that i can get updates for red hat 9.

Thanks!
