There are some pretty awesome new GIMP reviews posted on lots of websites now, like inatux.com. linux.com, etc., I think it would be a good idea to post like links to all these reviews so that the people looking to update will be able to find a long list of reviews they can read before doing so.

Ubuntu 8.04 Dual-Boot Issues (Windows XP) |

Hello everybody, I'm not going to lie and say that I'm not new to all of this so I figure I'll just admit it.
Over the past couple of days I had some hard drive issues and thought this would be as good of time as any to try this whole Linux thing again... (had some issues with a Vista dual boot at one point in time absolutely hosing the drive, though that was Vista I'm fairly certain)
So I installed XP back on the new drive that I found but only partitioned 150 GB for XP. The remainder of it I left for a Linux Distro in this case Ubuntu 8.04. I used the rest of it during the Ubuntu install process. I then rebooted the computer and everything went downhill from there. I can get into Windows XP just fine, however whenever I try and boot into Ubuntu it gets to
running boot scripts local /etc/rc.local [OK]
but after that the screen will just turn black and sit there and do nothing else. The version that I select in Grub is
Ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel 2.6.24-21-generic
However the other options that are available are Ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel 2.6.24-21-generic (recovery mode), Ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel 2.6.24-19-generic and Ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel 2.6.24-19-generic (recovery mode) there is also a selection for Ubuntu 8.04.1, memtest86+
I'm assuming the last one is just to check the drive integrity. Any assistance would be great as I'd love to be able to actually use Ubuntu, but obviously cannot if I cannot get into the system itself.
Thanks
Jonathan.

Anyone moved to Fedora 10 Beta yet? I've been running it since its release, most recently as my only Fedora install and a daily user. This release is shaping up to be the best yet. It has been rock solid on my laptop since it was installed.

Block groups in squid (connected to AD) |

Hi all, long time reader first time poster, I have finally transfered our Squid proxy over to Active directory and have it logging perfectly, in a few words the server is almost perfect.
There is only one thing keeping me back and that is banned groups. We run close to 200 groups with around 5000 users, and 2 groups need to be banned from proxy access.
The problem?
I have no idea where to start, the server is setup to AD so thats the main problem out of the way, our logging is working fine, the in house web front to the log access is working perfectly.... but I cannot ban groups.
I dont have any code to go by for you, I have taken over the Linux side of the company and am still learning, I have managed to get samba, kerberos, squid and winbind talking and logging, squidGuard is blocking bad sites. The old system was all done around eDirectory with some good ldap lookups which I cannot change to suite AD because it falls over.
So in short.
Does anyone have any links or ideas for a code which will allow me to run a acl for bannedinternetusers from Active Directory.
I have tried external_acl_ldap etc and it really confuses me

disabling unneded services |

hi
I have a Damn Small Linux Box that I use in my car, its an Pentium 2 with 256MB ram and nothing but the Harddrive, Mobo and the built in soundcard/videocard
I don't use a monitor and XMMS plays my music library on start-up, I control everything with a Keyboard
I have 2 questions
1)is there a way to disable services so that DSL boots faster?
I don't need it searching for ethernet devices on start-up and such it takes 1 min 37 seconds to boot (a lot of that time is the ancient bios loading and waiting 15 seconds for the grub to selct DSL) I have already disabled all POST stuff and disabled everything in the BIOS but keyboard and HDD.
2) also is there a way to create my own keyboard map?
I hate having a large keyboard in my car just to change tracks/shuffle ect, is there a method to use a USB number keypad and remap it so that "x"=1, "c"=2 ect ect
or how about away to create custom keyboard short-cuts in XMMS though I'd need a new way to shut down DSL...
I'm all ears and up for suggestions
thnx
