30 days with PCLinuxOS,

Day 23

Well what better way to start the last week with a screenshot of my beautiful Desktop

Days 24-27

well the days are flying by and i've not got much to report other than one crash, could be my own fault though, i closed the LCD and when I came back to it the machine seemed unresponsive, so I had to do a hard reboot again

not good ! a quick look at dmesg showed some lost data too, and that is definetly not good. Why it froze I don't know, but it did and that's twice now in the trial period.

once back in PCLinuxOS wireless was dead again, I popped back into /etc/rc.d/rc.local and added dhclient to the list of commands so it now looks like this

# Provides: rc.local

# X-Mandriva-Compat-Mode

# Default-Start: 2 3 4 5

# Short-Description: Local initialization script

# Description: This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.

# You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't

# want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.

touch /var/lock/subsys/local

modprobe ndiswrapper

i wconfig wlan0 essid wireless key 7177713332

i'll do a reboot soon to see if that really works

apart from that nothing to report, PCLinuxOS has definetly grown on me and I like the distro !

today i decided to see if I could listen to radio live, but it was FM104 in Ireland, and I've had problems in the past listening to this in Linux, so I popped over and they actually had a listen.pls file, which opened up straight away with Amarok, no need for any plugin, it just worked.

To test it further I tried the Windows Media player link, and this opened up the mplayer plugin for mozilla which after a delay of what seemed like a minute, started playing the radio, I was impressed !

here's today's PCLinuxOS screenshot for you :)

Day 28

so there I am trying to download an ISO via ktorrent, the actual torrent works fine, no need to tweak anything however I wanted to edit my upload/download speed so I checkout the ktorrent preferences, that brings up a window which is not resizable in the vertical direction, meaning that I can never apply my settings as I cannot see the apply or OK button. This is annoying, and ok, I'm using a KDE application in Gnome but that's what PCLinuxOS fired up when I clicked on the torrent.

well it turns out that all I have to do is to press Enter after making the changes, however it still strikes me as odd (and annoying) that I cannot resize the window, is this a ktorrent bug or something else, I don't know...

Day 31

woah, 30 days have passed and I should really be finishing this up but as I had some major diversions during this "30 days with PCLinuxOS" I will give it another few days before wrapping things up.

Today (and yesterday) I struggled with the CUPS web based interface for setting up a printer in PCLinuxOS. I say struggled because first of all I havn't seen this interface before in any other distro (usually a program) and secondly when I figured out how to use the web based interface, making any changes was slow and cumbersome (ie: annoying). On my fourth try I finally got a page to print, but it's not in colour (colour laser network printer), which sucks, so i'll have to experiment some more with the drivers, at least it prints now :).

If you want to change one thing about the printer you've just setup, you have to go through all the steps again, so in order to change the printer driver to one that will print in colour (i'm using generic pcl6 drivers) I have to go through 4 or 5 steps first. Oh and in case you also have a network printer and you can't figure out how to get it to print in PCLinuxOS then try adding it as a samba (windows) printer, and when the URI screen pops up paste in lpd:// and change the ip address to the one that your printer is using.
