some apps seem to try to run then die, log file?

for example, i'll run freeciv or mozilla from the KDE app menu, I get the hourglass and the app appears in the system tray with the hourglass as though it's trying to load, then the process just goes away. Is there a log file somewhere I can look at to see what's going wrong? Thanks.

check /var/log/messages also try running the command from a shell, you can usually use -v switch to get more output. At the very least try program --help to look for debug options. Break away from the gui and control the apps from cli.
