  Month On Linux
Posted by: GraySilver - 2007-06-01, 08:38 AM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (1)

Hello,

I have decided to run Linux for a month as I feel that I have out grown Windows (I have Vista Ultimate) but I until recently havn't been to sure about Linux so I decided that I would do Linux for a month. I am trying to get Fedora 7 to Dual boot with Vista (a task in itself) and I'm also trying to get Ubuntu to run live from a USB stick.

I am blogging my experiences at monthonlinux.blogspot.com. Take a look. I have pretty much started out with pretty much no knowledge about Linux (just how to install it and basic names of applications) and in several days I have actulay come quite a way.

  NMP-8602+ Issues
Posted by: foobro42 - 2007-05-30, 02:57 AM - Forum: Wireless - Replies (2)

Recently, I purchased a NMP-8602+ miniPCI. I have tried using this card in a HP ze5470us running Fedora Core 6 with the atheros madwifi drivers. The latest madwifi. The drivers compile w/o errors. I am able to bring ath0 up (sometimes) but the system locks often. Most of the time it locks when I try to use the wireless. E.g. capture wireless traffic with airodump-ng or scan for wireless APs in the area. I check the system logs...here are the messages before it locks up.

May 28 08:59:29 steve-laptop pcscd: winscard.c:219:SCardConnect() Reader E-Gate 0 0 Not Found

May 28 08:59:29 steve-laptop last message repeated 3 times

also

May 28 09:57:37 steve-laptop kernel: wifi0: ath_reset: unable to reset hardware: '' (HAL status 0)

May 28 09:57:39 steve-laptop kernel: wifi0: rx FIFO overrun; resetting

I thought perhaps it was my configuration so I tried a popular security tools live distro Backtrack 2 w/ madwifi drivers. The card was detected but the system hangs just like in FC6.

I tried another laptop I had handy to see if it was hardware compatibility issues. I just tried a L2005cu. The laptop will not boot as it detects an "unapproved" wireless card.

I though i'd try another OS. I installed windows 2000 pro on the same HP ZE5470us. I downloaded the correct Atheros drivers for this card. When I do the install on the drivers (I tried 3 versions) the BSOD appears. The message displayed "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" with some memory addresses. I tried updating the BIOS as well to be sure.

So, I'm looking for some advice. Is this card perhaps bad? Incompatible? I am going to take the card to work tomorrow and try it in a few laptops. Have you heard of this incompatibility happening to anyone else?

Thanks in Advance!

  Record your desktop
Posted by: xDamox - 2007-05-29, 08:44 PM - Forum: Audio and Video - No Replies

Hey all,

Well its been a while since I posted a guide on linux-noob :( this is due to being a bit to busy with university work, anyways I thought I would write a small guide on how to record your desktop using xvidcap. Xvidcap dose not require VNC and is capable of saving your recoding in the following formats:

Quote:X11 Window Dump (.xwd) Portable Graymap File (.pgm)

Portable Anymap File (.ppm)

Portable Network Graphics File (.png)

Joint Picture Expert Group (.jpg, .jpeg)

Microsoft Audio Video Interleaved File (.avi)

General AVI file (DIVX default) (.mpeg, .mpg)

Microsoft Advanced Streaming Format (.asf)

Macromedia Flash Video Stream (.flv, .flv1)

Macromedia Shockwave Flash File (.swf)

DV Video Format (.dv)

MPEG1 System Format (.m1v, .vcd)

MPEG2 PS Format (.m2v, .svcd)

Quicktime Format (.mov, .qt)

The first step to this guide is to install the livna repository. If you don't know how to do this you can have a read of [/url][url=<___base_url___>/index.php?showtopic=2533][/url][url=<___base_url___>/index.php?showtopic=2533]https://www.linux-noob.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2533 tutorial which

shows you how to install the livna repository. Once you have installed the livna repository you can install the xvidcap utility, which is the program we will use to record your desktop

Code:
yum -y install xvidcap

Once xvidcap has been installed you can simply issue the following command to start recording your desktop:

Code:
xvidcap

If you want to specify a larger region of the screen to record you can simply issue the following;

Code:
xvidcap --cap_geometry 800x600

You can also specify the X and Y co-ordinates of the screen as shown below:

Code:
xvidcap --cap_geometry 800x600+0+0

The above will record 800x600 in the top left corner of your screen. If you want to save your recorded desktop into one of the video formats supported by xvidcap you can simply issue the following command with the following qualifiers.

Code:
xvidcap --cap_geometry 800x600+0+250 --file test.avi --format avi

Let's have a break down of the qualifiers and what they do:

--cap_geometry 800x600

This qualifier specifies the region of the screen you want to record.

--file test.avi

This qualifier tell xvidcap what to save the file as, the default is test-001.mpeg

--format avi

This qualifier tells xvidcap what format to save the data in, for a list of formats just use
