Posted by: anyweb - 2007-03-21, 11:45 AM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Quote:The One Laptop Per Child program reported today that after 303 builds, it finally has a satisfactory version of its Red Hat Linux-based Sugar operating system that is considered stable, according to OLPC president for software and content Walter Bender. "After a final few bugs that had hidden in corners were driven into the light, we issued Stable Build 303 along with Q2B76 firmware this week," Bender said in his weekly email report.

  File access log/audit and alerts
Posted by: FC6Secure6 - 2007-03-21, 05:26 AM - Forum: Security and Firewalls - No Replies

I am runnning into problems with building a log for files (such as text files) to show when they were accessed (read updated or deleted); I have tried using Seedit http://seedit.sourceforge.net/, Snare http://www.intersectalliance.com/projects/Snare/ , and few other small utilities with no success on building the logs. Does anyone know of any other utilities that might help me with this or maybe a guide on what I might be doing wrong with Seedit or Snare, I believe my relative lack of knowledge concerning Linux is the main reason I am having such a hard time. Also I am trying to find a way to be alerted in case these files are accessed by someone who should not have access, I am not quite sure how to be alerted and I was hoping someone might have some suggestions. Any help is a appreciated, thank you.

Murdock: Debian 'Missing a Big Opportunity', Joins Sun
Posted by: anyweb - 2007-03-20, 09:55 AM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Quote:Debian Etch moves ever closer, and Ian Murdock - the project's founder - has been interviewed about Debian's politics, its lack of strong leadership, and Ubuntu's ever-growing fame. He feels that Debian is too enveloped in process and politics, making it impossible for anybody to make big decisions, thereby hindering the pace of development. In addition, on his weblog Murdock has announced he is joining Sun.

So far the easiest way to add users is in a terminal and use the useradd -m login name then to set the password you use the passwd login name

Red Hat Plans Linux Desktop Offering 'for the Masses'
Posted by: anyweb - 2007-03-19, 08:21 PM - Forum: Linux News - No Replies

Quote:Red Hat is planning a packaged Linux desktop solution that it hopes will push its Linux desktop offering to a far broader audience than exists for its current client solution. The move is designed in part to compete with Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 platform, which includes SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, which were released in July 2006.

How to edit video on a Linux system
Posted by: hybrid - 2007-03-19, 07:06 PM - Forum: Linux News - Replies (1)

Linux.com have an article about editing video on Linux:

Quote:Shooting, editing, and producing video clips has been my passion for about 10 years. As a free software adept, I always tried to perform this process on Linux. This year I have finally found a set of tools that work for me. This article provides a brief tutorial on home video production.

The process consists of several steps. First, you transfer the video source material to your Linux machine (video grabbing). Next, you edit the video, possibly mixing it with other video and audio material, and then render it into an output video file. If your goal is to upload a file to the Web or share it with your computer-savvy friends, then this is the end. Sometimes, however, you want to create a DVD suitable for conventional DVD players. In those cases the final step is authoring the DVD.

Bring on the bling with Beryl
Posted by: hybrid - 2007-03-19, 07:45 AM - Forum: Linux News - Replies (2)

Quote:Desktop computing technology has evolved considerably since the first graphical user interface was developed by researchers at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center in 1973. Thirty years after the conception of the window and the cursor, developers are now challenging conventional interface paradigms in order to provide users with a whole new generation of visually responsive and aesthetically provocative software technologies. Microsoft's Aero Glass, Apple's Quartz 2D Extreme, and Sun's Project Looking Glass are all poised to transform the way that users interact with computers. Also at the forefront of innovation, the Linux community has some prodigiously impressive new user interface technologies of its own. Beryl, a new open-source window manager for Linux, features compelling visual enhancements like support for transparent windows and elaborate window animations. Based on David Reveman's Compiz window manager, Beryl leverages hardware-accelerated rendering to provide support for unique and innovative graphical functionality.

A nice article about Beryl and the associated technology around that, including a brief look at how to install it and some of its features too!
