What options exist when all windows are hung? |

Hi all. I'm looking for some help with a homework question that I was unable to complete.
Question: A user calls and says all of his windows are hung. He can't do anything. Describe what steps you'd take.
My answer was to ssh into the box and start killing processes. However, I only received 1/3 for my answer.
My instructor's reply was: this is OK as far as it goes, but what about the mid-range / mainframe scenario (multiple users on the same box) ?
Does anyone know what the appropriate approach is here?

After seeing the how to mount a fat32 partition I thought I'd show you how to mount a share.
First off you need to make sure the share it setup correctly on your Windows system, I'll only focus on sharing with WinXP.
Its not hard on WinXP. First off right-click on the folder you wish to share and select "Sharing and Security".
Select "Share this folder".
You can now set the Share name, you can also fiddle with the maximum number of users allowed at one time (the default is normally good enough).
If you want to heighten the security in this share you can click on "Permissions" and remove the default "Everyone" group (select and click Remove). After this you can click Add. Type the username that will be used to allow access (this has to be a valid user on your WinXP machine). Click Ok, and Ok again. The folder icon should alter and a hand will be holding the folder. This indicates a network share.
Ok so you need to know these things:
The hostname of the WinXP PC (eg winpc). Right click on "My Computer" click on "Computer Name". Look at the "Full Computer Name".
The sharename of the folder (eg shared) Do you remember what you called it :P.
A user/pass for the winxp system. This is only required if you altered the permissions (i.e. if its not sharing to Everyone).
Phew 50% of the way there.
Ok so onto the Linux system, its relatively simple:
Make the directory you want to mount the share to.
Next either...
Mount the share with user/pass:
Code: smbmount //winpc/shared /mnt/share -o username=user,password=pass,rw
Or mount the share without a user/pass (this is true if Everyone is still set)
Code: smbmount //winpc/shared /mnt/share -o rw
Hopefully thats it. Now you can use the share. You cannot create symbolic links or chmod the system (this is restriction on the WinXP side).
If you wish to allow users on the linux side access to the share then you will need to alter the options. Adding in uid= or gid= to allow access to users or groups respectively by mounting the drive with there permissions. Here's an example:
Code: smbmount //winpc/shared /mnt/share -o rw,uid=znx
This will mount the drive as if user znx had done it. Thus he will have rw access to the shared.
Hands up who I managed to confuse ;)

Hey ,
I have Fedora core 3 but i had problems getting the CD-Burner to configure .. the CD drive was recognised yet it did not config. So i looked around a couple more distros and was told Knoppix should work ok, So i downloaded the lastest 3.6 Live-Eval and installed using Sudo Knoppix-Installer. The installation was a complete success the CD-Burner works and the sound works without any drivers, unlike windows which didnt work with the sound on the laptop. Now i have a problem "Knoppix does not ask for any user details what so ever. Now when i went to install the flash plugin I need the root password which I dont have as i never set one" Does anyone no if this is a standard thing and there is a standard password for it. Or how i can get around it and change it.
:)

Good afternoon, all.
As stated in the title, I'm running fedora core 3 with gnome, kde and fluxbox.
The problem I'm having is with gnome, which is the default for the system. At first, everything was fine, but now the desktop itself won't draw, either in root or as user.
To describe what I mean: The bars and docks show, but no icons for folders, etc. and the system itself slows down. I've no problems running kde or fluxbox, however. Currently, I can get the terminal and reboot nto another wm, but its a pain in the neck. I dislike having a whole portion of my system unusable, but maybe I'll just have to change the default wm? o_O
I'm somewhat new to gnome and fedora, so I don't really know where to start repairing it or changing the default wm.
TIA
ps- also, is it possible to change the resolution outside of whats offered in the display manager? I know my adapter [prosavage] is capable of running at a higher resolution, but currently none of the desktop will let me go beyond 1024x768 or so.
