  Flash player in Konqueror...
Posted by: mephistophyles - 2004-08-03, 08:19 PM - Forum: Web Browsers - Replies (1)

Ok, I went to a few sites right after installing Mandrake 9.2 on my comp, and i keep getting this pop-up that tells me to download the Flash/shockwave player for my browser. I go to the site from macromedia and download the thing, now I have an tar.gz file, and I haven't a clue what that is or how do I use it, now i double clicked it, hoping it would install automatically (windows has spoiled me in that sense) but it opens the file, the read-me says to either use an install script (?) or manually put certain files into the browser plug-in folder, I can't find this folder, so would it be easier to use Mozilla or how does this work? thanks

  Installed wine, now what?
Posted by: mephistophyles - 2004-08-03, 08:11 PM - Forum: Wine - Replies (4)

I looked around on the internet and found a lot of reference to this wine program, so I thought I'd have a look, I particularly want to run msn or some other messenger program, e-messenger is nice, but not terribly practical. I got wine, installed it and now its under "start"(or what ever you call it in linux)>"applications">"emulators". Its nice to have notepad and minesweeper again, but I want to know how to instal other things. Beware, if you start talking about directory and stuff be prepared to explain from the beginning of things, because this is all new to me, any help will be greaty appreciated, thanks in advace!

P.S. any way to change from Kmail to evolution (worked in fedora for me) under my KDE setup?

  fedora core 2 installed!
Posted by: Guest - 2004-07-31, 10:55 AM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 2 - Replies (6)

hi, i've just installed fedora core 2 on my clean system wanting to know more about linux... and i've got quite a lot of questions so if anyone couldanswer some of them that would be real nice :)

1.i guess that the drivers installed by default for my system aren't the most up to date, is there a way to check every drivers' version, like a Hardware manager on windows ? and is there a how to for driver installation ?

2. could anyone please explain to me the way linux filesystem works ? i see a lot of directories but none make sense to me, bin, usr, bin inside user, boot, dev etc.... anyway to easily explain it ?

3. there's a flashing red ball in the tray, it looks like it's an up2date program that patches my packages, but it crashes, anyway to do this manually ?

4. what are the most common used programs and commands, is there list of commands for the terminal ?

5. i heard about kernel recompiling, what is it about ?

if any of these questions are answered else where, bare with me please :]

thanks in advance to those who answer some of the questions
