Screens and Graphics Preferences - Mythbuntu 7.10 (Ubuntu)
Posted by: wyrdR - 2008-02-17, 12:46 PM - Forum: Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) - No Replies

Since switching to Linux, I've got a million and one problems, most of them stemming from my complete noobiness in Linux. I smugly thought I was a bit of a geek since I know Windows fairly well. But none of my Windows-smarts seem to make a difference with Linux.

1) How do I get HDMI to work at 1360 x 768?

I have a HD LCD tv plugged into my ATI Radeon X1250 (in-built) graphics card via HDMI.

When going through the ATI drives in the Screens and Graphics Preferences I can't get of those to work. I even downloaded and (eventually) ran ati-driver-installer-8-02-x86.x86_64.run but I don't see what it did (a slightly more experienced Linux noob suggested I do this). It didn't seem to help (I probably goofed up somewhere).

I can only get it to work with VESA drive (Generic) and I'm stuck with 1024 x 768, though 1360 x 768 is supported by my LCD TV and preferable since the image would not be stretched horizontally.

I'm running Mythbuntu 7.10 (Ubuntu that boots into MythTV).

2) How do I detect and configure Dual Screens?

I also have a monitor plugged in via D-SUB that supports upto 1280 x 1024. But Screens and Graphics Preferences only seems to detect one (no idea which). I do dual screen in Windows all the time, but Ubuntu has me stumped.

3) What driver should I actually be using?

  I'm a noob again...
Posted by: wyrdR - 2008-02-17, 12:21 PM - Forum: Hello - Replies (1)

G'day All.

Recently set up a media box for my lounge room, and decided to give Mythbuntu a shot. A week of on and off dabbling, and I'm starting to wish I could just stick in the disks that came in the box and just plug and play.

My feeble skills mean very little in the Linux world... Windows has spoilt me.

But, a bit of googling, and I see there's a whole community out there that have long ago embraced Linux, and many other Linux noobs out there, giving it a go.

So far, I have a media box that will play some DVDs and others not, it's remote control does next to nothing, and omnious black screens and silence when I try to watch DTV.

Anyway... see ya round. :)

My name is Carl and I am somewhat new to Linux. I have done specific tasks with Debian, RedHat, Fedora and Ubuntu. I still consider myself a noob at linux in general. I hope to learn alot from this forum and share my experience.

  incomplete shut down
Posted by: Charles Anthony - 2008-02-12, 02:32 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (3)

How do I configure my computer to turn off completely?

What file contains that configuration?

Right now, with the shut down, my computer terminates all the processes but the screen just stops at the "Sytem halted" message. I have to press the power button to turn it completely off. I do not want to have to turn the button off every time.

  Removing Openoffice 2.0
Posted by: doncorleone - 2008-02-12, 12:26 PM - Forum: SUSE - Replies (2)

Hello,

I'm trying to to remove my Openoffice 2.0 that was came with my SuSE 10.0. I've installed the Openoffice 2.3 but do not know how to remove the old version so that I can use the new version as default.

Can you please give me tips on how to use Openoffice 2.3 as my default? I can easily remove the old version but I'm skeptical until I'm able to sort out the new version.

Thanks

basically if you read a post/news/blog/article/solution/question/whatever here on the forums that you'd like published on digg or facebook or myspace or.... (you choose) then click on the relavant icon and the rest is automagic

To be more specific: If I recieve a syslog-message with some speciel text e.g "thingy". I want the syslog-server to send an email.

Is this something that can be done using only syslog-ng and sendmail???

  Fedora 9 Alpha review

Quote:On this Super Tuesday here in the United States, Red Hat has this morning released the first and only alpha release for Fedora 9. This ninth Fedora release, which has been codenamed Sulphur, will ship in April and go head-to-head against Ubuntu 8.04 LTS "Hardy Heron", but what features can one expect in this forthcoming release? Among the features being worked on are encrypted file-system support, updating the KDE spin to KDE 4.0, PackageKit integration, and switching to upstart initialization. In this article, we are taking a brief look at Fedora 9 Alpha and the features planned for Fedora 9.

  centos 4.5 Installation problem
Posted by: abhishek77 - 2008-02-06, 07:45 PM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (1)

I am trying to setup centos 4.5 on one of my hard drives.

I burned the image file to a DVD disc.

So during setup, it asks what type of media contains the packages to be installed?

I select the local cd rom option.

Next screen is that centos-4 i386 cd was not found in any of your CD rom drives.

I tried looking for solutions online but to no help.

can anyone help here?
