going to catch up my skills on Linux stuffs... (i am mac user have use Unix commands) but going back on Linux as good old time..
There is a lot of things has been going on with my life.. i had my wonderful life for while... now all screw up..
so.. I am going back on IRC like old time. and keep it all up to date with Linux issue. i am far behind. But i am going to study and catch up! that my way of study! :)
I have a standalone drive that I'm trying to access from Linux (Fedora 7).
In Windows, I access this drive by entering "\\netdrive\public" in the Explorer address bar.
I'm new to Linux, but I think I would need to mount this drive using smbmount or mount -smb or something similar; recent googling seems to indicate that smbmnt is no longer in Fedora, so I need to use mount -t cifs instead.
I've tried various parameters with mount -cifs. I think I want to do something like:
Code:
mount -cifs //netdrive/public /mnt/netdrive/public -o username=myname
but I get:
mount error 111 = Connection refused.
Can someone provide some help in configuring this? I'm not sure if the problem is with my use of mount -cifs, or if I'm even seeing the drive on the network.
I'm an advanced user... in windows lol.. I've been using windows since Windows 98 So i have many many questions.
I have just installed Fedora Core 8, this are my specifications:
- AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8 Mhz
- 512 Mb DDR ram (i use to have 1 GB, but one memory get trucked up)
- GeForce 7300 GS
- And an ASUS MB.
btw... i use the software in the spanish version, so i may not translate all the panel and menu options, ok?
Now... I want to use the Desktop effects. I just go to system-> preferences -> visual-du-no-wa and du-no-who-> Desktop efects, then, clic in Activate Desktop Effects, and... Desktop effects could not be enable.
Reading in previous pages i find that the newest nvidia controller must be installed, ok. How to install? I find that first i need to install or configure or something, the "livna".
To do so i go to the terminal and writed (as a super user):
After upgrading to Fedora 8 from 7, I am no longer able to play online poker games through any of the browsers: Firefox, Galeon and Konqueror. I think it is a problem with Flash but I am not sure how to solve it.
The website requires both the Java Runtime Environment and Shockwave, both of which seem to be correctly installed. When I enter the "about:plugins" this is what I get:
Code:
GCJ Web Browser Plugin 1.4
File name: gcjwebplugin.so
The GCJ Web Browser Plugin executes Java applets.
I get a positive result: Java Version 1.7.0 from Sun Microsystems
With Shockwave, I am confused because I am able to play YouTube videos diirectly from the site without a glitch but when I load this site to test http://www.explorelearning.com/View/vCorp/shockPop.html it, I get a failure and a message that tells me to download the plugin. The link leads me to the Adobe download page but it presents me with the following message:
Code:

Hey I'm kitkat. Or Caitti. I'm completely new to Linux so if you have any advice for me that would be great help. Distro= Fedora core 6
I was going to install it tonight but I actually decided I'm going to wait and get my new computer first. I was wondering if anyone could help me find a lug because I'll need as much help as I can get. I've heard rumors of there being a St. Cloud area one but so far I'm not finding anything but invalid links. Also if anyone knows about one in Mankato that would also be helpful.
Hi, complete noob here. I am running a dual boot system with Gusty Gibbon (Ubuntu 7.10) and am trying to use my Logitech THX Z-5300e 5.1 speakers but am getting nothing. Everything is fully updated as far as I can tell, the speakers work when I boot into Windows (I needs my gaming), and when I plug my old stereo speakers into my front audio jack they work fine. I see myself using Linux quite a bit as time goes on and would like to be able to listen to music while I do so.
I do not need the actual 5.1 settings (that is really just for games), if I could even get just the front two working I would be happy. I really do not want to end up needing to plug in a second set of speakers just for Linux.
I got Ubuntu about 2 weeks ago on my PC. So i'm just getting used to some the features. I wanted to be able to watch MOV, DIVX, etc files so I downloaded Mplayer and removed Totem
After downloading and extracting Mplayer, a set of binary libraries from the mplayer.hu website, and a skin. i created a folder, /usr/lib/codec, for the libraries and placed them there. when i run ./configure i get the following terminal response:
if you go to http://www.pclinuxos.com and choose 'getpclinuxos' you'll get the options to buy, download or try out the community remasters. As I wanted to get stuck in, I chose the download option and burned the ISO to CD. That CD was a PCLinuxOS 2007 liveCD which you can boot off and end up with a nice KDE based desktop.
while i'm not particularly fond of KDE (ok I admit it, k3b rocks !) I moved onward to see how this distro would progress in my hands.
As you can see below from the default livecd bootup, there's a nice KDE desktop with at least one thing some Windows users are used to, and that is the FireFox icon.
My first surprise occured while browsing through the 'PC' menu, and then choosing Internet followed by Remote access. While I expected to find a 'terminal' program I was instead blinded by a familiar Windows Icon (for anyone that uses both Windows and Linux and ssh) called putty. I clicked on it and putty started, I was impressed but also confused, I guess I need to find out exactly what market PCLinuxOS is aimed at (I'm guessing Windows users with some limited linux experience).
Anyways, it was getting late in the night and it was a long week so I decided to get started by clicking on the 'Install PCLinuxOS' icon. that action brought up a Draklive-Install Enhanced wizard, which for Mandrake sorry Mandriva users should be familiar enough, so I did the predictable and clicked on \next'
followed by choosing 'Normal Hard Drive (ide, sata)' and then next. This now gave me the option of removing the Windows Installation that was already there, or for dual booters, use the free space on the Windows partition and why doesn't it spell this out as dual boot.
I chose to dual boot (second option) and after clicking next was given a warning which stated
Quote:WARNING!DrakX will now resize your Windows partition. Be careful: this operation is dangerous. If you have not already done so, you first need to exit the installation, run "chkdsk c:" from a Command Prompt under Windows (beware, running graphical program "scandisk" is not enough, be sure to use "chkdsk" in a Command Prompt!), optionally run defrag, then restart the installation. You should also backup your data. When sure, press Ok.
As this was a test machine and I didn't care about the installation of Windows that was currently on it (Windows XP sp2) I clicked next. Now I was given the option of how much space I should reserve for Windows, as this was a 40gb hdd, I chose half or approx 20gb.
After clicking next, I was informed that because of resizing the partitions, my next boot into Windows would encur some filesystem checks (chkdsk), the next screen that popped up worried me as I can imagine that noobs would not know which window to click on or may panic and give up.
One window told me that a new medium has been detected (20gb Media) and the window directly behind that had a BIG warning symbol on it with
a warning in red which said 'The partition/s you have selected will be formatted. All the data will be wiped. I clicked on next.
after some time it finished its job and presented me with yet another wizard choice, this time for grub. Strangely the programmers didn't bother to consider long 'hard disc serial' names (look at boot device) so I ended up with a scroll bar which makes the wizard look.... unfinished. Anyway, I went with the defaults but before doing so I clicked on the 'bootloader to use' option only to see that grub was offered with graphical, text and also lilo was offered. Cool.
If anyone knows how to do the above pelase tell me. While I scratched my head I clicked on finish.
After pressing the power button and being greeted with a reboot option, I chose it. Cool. After the reboot I was indeed presented with a grub menu similar to what I saw in the installation, so I chose windows to boot. This option did get windows to start chkdsk so the PCLinuxOS had described things correctly. Once done checking, windows rebooted, and PCLinuxOS itself, booted (as I made no further selection within the next grub that appeared.
However once it loaded, I could immediatly see that my desktop was set for a really small screen (640x480 perhaps ?)
