Gaim Has Been Renamed Pidgin
#1

Quote:Gaim, the ubiquitous open source instant messaging program, in order to settle a lawsuit with America Online, was renamed "Pidgin" last week. The derivative projects, libgaim and gaim-text will be renamed libpurple and Finch respectively. The new website is at pigdin.im, but it's currently pointing to the Gaim sourceforge site. Pidgin 2.0.0, in development for well over a year, is expected this week.

if you ask me the name is a bit daft, ok If they had to change it how about changing it to something that people would understand like 'ossmess' or something...

Don't knock the name change, this sounds like they have been under a lot of excess stress caused by AOL not closing out the threat. Most disappointing.

I think the name is fine, bit odd about the libpurple (why not libpigdin?) sigh. Oh well another big company feeling threated by the Open Source revolution!

The name is pidgin (odd) but the website is pigdin? Or was that a typo? ;)

Tha name says nothing to me at all... Does it mean anything?

It sure does!

It's not daft either, it's a very clever name actually.

It's a pun on Carrier pigeons ( see wp:Pigeon_post ) used to carry messages and on pidgin languages - both very relevant to instant messaging, and as a pidgin is a language used by people who speak different languages to communicate with each other - it's a rather appropriate name for a program that allows you to communicate with people using different chat protocols!

Personally I am really relieved that the name has finally changed after all these years!

AOL/Time/Warner is a VERY unethical company ( just have a look for "boycott AOL" on Google and see how many different groups have serious issues with them and for how many different reasons! )

I stopped using AIM years ago, will not use ICQ, and always hated the fact that GAIM had an AIM like little yellw man icon and AIM in its name - I was ashamed to have those graphics on my box, and it was inappropriate branding for me because that's the one protocol I never wanted to use it for - it was there for me for Jabber, sometimes IRC (although I'd rather use Epic4 or Chatzilla), Yahoo!, MSN and Sametime.

I'm not suprised in the slightest that AOL would take action against a free software group - that's just the sort of money grabbing uncharitable thing a company like that does! GAIM never hurt them - if anything it got them more customers because it encouraged people to use their chat network by it giving them access from other platforms - thereby meaning AhOLers didn't have to switch over to M$N Messenger to avoid being left with nobody else to talk to.

I think Pidgin and the purple pigeon logo are the coolest!

There... that's set a cat amongst the pidgins!
