Can`t connect to the internet..

I`m quite a noob, just installed Fedora Core 1. But I can`t connect to the internet, I have 2 NIC`s , one onboard and one external, both work fine and get detected by Fedora, but I cant activate them.. They both stand as inactive, when I try to activate them I get a message like " Check cable" or so. Tried using rp-pppoe too, but when I try to connect I get the message: "Child process exited abnormal" help would be appriciated!

try redhat-config-network

also run lspci as root and see if they are listed
