  My Gentoo Installation (Work in Progress)
Posted by: mechtn - 2007-02-21, 09:15 PM - Forum: Gentoo - Replies (19)

My Gentoo Installation (Work in Progress)

I've finally decided to really dedicate myself to learning Linux and using Linux more than I currently do. The first step is taking the main computer (my laptop) that I use all the time and converting it from Windows XP to Gentoo.

Laptop Specs

Dell Inspiron 6400

Intel T7400 - Core 2 Duo 2.16Ghz

1GB of RAM

60GB Hard Drive

ATI X1400 Video Card

Conexant HDA D110 MDC V.92 Modem

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Contoller

Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

Standard SD Host contoller (Secure Digital Card)

SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec

Intel USB2 Enhanced Host Controller

So, I started doing this research to figure out some common things that I'm going to have to know when I do my gentoo installation based on these specs. So far I've determined, thanks to the help of #gentoo on irc.freenode.net that i'll need to use the following for my processor to take full advantage of it. Special Thanks to FunnyMan3595 for his help!

Code:
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=nocona -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
MAKEOPTS="-j3"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

USE Flags = mmxext sse2

It was suggested to use -march=prescott because it 'might' be faster, however Intel recommends -march=nocona. I found that prescott was origionally suggested in a gentoo forums debate for core duo processors. Since then Core 2 Duo has come out and it's recommended nocona. Another note I found was "As of GCC 4.3, you can set -march to "core2". This also enables the SSSE3 instruction set, also new in 4.3. However, gcc 4.3 is only available in the gentoo 'toolchain' overlay and given it's stability level (pre-alpha) you'd be mad to use that right now."

You can continue to watch the Gentoo Safe_Cflags page for updates.

From here I'm going to continue my research on other applications I plan to run and what flags or options I'll need to use to customize my system for the best performance. More to come....

  Grub error 17
Posted by: sieggie - 2007-02-21, 08:56 PM - Forum: Grub and Lilo - Replies (1)

OK this is a long story. I had originally installed Ubuntu on my computer to dueal boot with XP. Grub had worked fine until i got a new Sata HD. The other HD's had both been IDE one had windows on it the other had Ubuntu. When i plugged my Sata drive in I recived a Grub error (don't remember # this was about 2 months ago). I was able to boot into windows or linux when i unplugged the sata drive. When i booted into windows i had installed Acronis boot selector. This allowed me to use my sata drive at the cost of ubuntu. So now after a windows crash i decided to reinstall windows and then ubuntu on my Sata drive (I also uninstalled Acronis). They both are installed on 2 partitons on my sata drive. I now try to load into Grub and the menu loads however every option i choose for linux gives me Grub error 17 and Windows gives me NTDFS is missing.

I have gone looking for help and was told on the grub command line type:

Code:
root (hd2,1)
setup (hd0)

the root command goes through however the setup command gives me error 17 again. I do not know what to do anymore that is the most information i am able to get on how to fix this problem. My Hd's are set up like this:

hd0 = hda

hd1 = hdb

hd2 = sda (2 partitions 1=windows, 2=ubuntu)

PLease if anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated. If you need anymore info just ask but please bear in mind i'm a really large linux noob so i need to know the commands to access most of the files. Thanks to anyone if they can help

  Network Install of Ubuntu using PXE and tftp
Posted by: metalx - 2007-02-21, 03:21 AM - Forum: Feisty Fawn (7.04) - Replies (2)

K so I have a computer running win server 03, dhcp capable of bootp and tftp (for my networking class), I just want to know how to do a net install of Ubuntu or fc6 or whatever so that it will use a local copy of he OS rather then downloading from the internet. I have a feeling it has to do with the netboot.cfg file. If theres a tut or a topic on this a link would be greatly appreciated.

As always I appreciate all the help and look forward to the time I can help others.

  Wireless in SuSE 10.2: I have a solution!
Posted by: kabifff - 2007-02-21, 01:07 AM - Forum: SUSE - Replies (10)

I noticed there were upwards of 800 views to my previous post about wireless in SuSE 10.2, and zero responses. I dug and dug and dug, and finally, at www.opensuse.org of all places, they had a fix for me. I will post it here as verbatim as I can, otherwise you can see it in full by clicking here. . Please note that this will only work with BROADCOM cards, not atheros or any other brand. Be warned.

Situation

Situation 1 - You have a Broadcom WLAN card based on BCM4306 chipset but the card is not active because of the missing Linux Driver (Version 9.3 - 10.0). See "ndiswrapper procedure".

Situation 2 - You have openSUSE 10.2 and you have a Broadcom bcm43xx series chipset listed in YaST > Network Devices > Network Card. Note: openSUSE 10.2 was distributed with the BCM46xx driver but not the firmware for legal reasons.

openSUSE 10.2 Option 1 - You can use the orginal drivers distributed with openSUSE 10.2, however, the bcm46xx drivers only support 11 Mb/s. Users who need/want the original drivers need to load the firmware for the chipset using bcm43xx-fwcutter. See "Original Driver Procedure"

openSUSE 10.2 Option 2 - You can maximize your wireless hardware to 54 Mb/s in most cases using the ndiswrapper, however to use this option you will need to remove the bcm46xx drivers and blacklist them from being reloaded again using the "bmc43xx Removal Procedure" then use the "ndiswrapper procedure".

[edit]

ndiswrapper Procedure

Note: In 10.2 you must first remove the original bcm43xx driver according to "openSUSE 10.2 Option 2 - bcm43xx Removal Procedure", prior to using ndiswrapper, see below for removal procedure

1. You need to check if ndiswrapper is installed through: Yast > Software > Software Installation and search for ndiswrapper. 2. Start the shell console (Kmenu >System > Terminal Program > Terminal) and login as root with the command:

sux -

and type in the root password. Afterwards create a directory with:

mkdir /lib/windrivers

You need to download the Windows driver for BCM4306 from the following link: [/url][url=http://www.silfreed.net/download/hpzt3000cto/SP23107A.tar.gz]http://www.silfreed.net/download/hpzt3000cto/SP23107A.tar.gz and place them under /lib/windrivers:

mv PATH_TO_DRIVER /lib/windrivers

From the console change to the directory with the drivers:

cd /lib/windrivers

Afterwards execute

tar -zxvf NAME_OF_DRIVER.tar.gz

for example tar -zxvf SP23107A.tar.gz then

cd NAME_OF_DRIVER

Check if threre are no other ndiswrapper modules loaded with:

ndiswrapper -l

if there are some, remove them with:

ndiswrapper -e NAME_OF_MODULE

After this install the Drivermodule with

ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf

and load the module with

modprobe ndiswrapper

Reboot. Now you can configure your WLAN card through YAST > Network devices > Network card and configure a new wireless card and use the module name ndiswrapper. The other options here depend on the network system you want to use. (Fixed IP or DHCP, encryption etc.)

You can check if the card is active as from the console [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [F1] as "root" and type in

iwconfig

or

ifconfig

to see if the interface is recognized.

[edit]

openSUSE 10.2 Option 1 - Original Driver Procedure

1. You need to check if the bcm43xx-fwcutter package is installed through: Yast > Software > Software Installation and search for bcm43xx-fwcutter

2. Find the windows driver for your wireless chip. An example windows driver was titled bcmwl5.sys Also note if you can't find yours try doing a google search for wl_apsta.o (SUSE worked with both the orginal windows driver and the wl_apsta.o at the time of this WIKI post). Put the driver file on your desktop in SUSE.

3. Start the shell console (Kmenu >System > Terminal Program > Terminal) and login as root with the command:

sux -

and type in the root password

Extract your firmware files from your wireless chip and store them in the firmware file by typing in the following. (Note: Swap out the name of your driver accordingly...in this example it is wl_apsta.o):

bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware ~/Desktop/wl_apsta.o

Now that the firmware is extracted and ready for the driver to use, load the module by typing the following:

modprobe bcm43xx

6. Reboot and now you can configure your WLAN card through YAST > Network devices > Network card

[edit]

openSUSE 10.2 Option 2 - bcm43xx Removal Procedure

Only use the procedure below if you plan on removing openSUSE 10.2's original bcm43xx driver and installing the unsupported ndiswrapper driver.

1. Start the shell console (Kmenu >System > Terminal Program > Terminal) and login as root with the command:

sux -

and type in the root password

See if you have the bcm43xx drivers still installed:

lsmod | grep bcm43xx

Any response means it's installed, so remove it:

rmmod bcm43xx

Now blacklist it from being loaded again by adding the line "blacklist bcm43xx" to very bottom of the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file. To open the file with Kwrite type:

su -c 'kwrite /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist'

Also edit /etc/sysconfig/hardware/(your nic card) to change the module. Change 'bcm43xx' to 'ndiswrapper'

su -c 'kwrite /etc/sysconfig/hardware/hwcfg-bus-pci-xxx

2. Now follow the instructions in the "ndiswrapper procedure" above to setup your wireless card using ndiswrapper.

  learning linux

Hi I am not the normal windows user... I love the cotnrol I can have with my computer and am not bothered by the command prompt and really have little interest in an interface as I think it should come later. I loved dos as it gave me sheer power with the right programs and gave me more functionality than xp does today... I still use it for things, like to wiew this webpage and post this I am using a dos based web browser called arachne... and am listening to music with another program running in the background called jet audio... it is all 64 bit as well with an athalon 3200+ 64 with 2.0 gig of ram and 330 gig of hdd space I play the occasional games on xp like ut2004 and soon 2007. As for the most part I use dos 6.22 with addons and support programs. I have both DOS and Windows XP running on Reiser FS as it doesnt fragment at all and is faster and more stable then ntfs and fat... I love to toy with my computers as it helps zone me out after a long day at work. Id love to learn to code and hack and just want the Linux kernel a really good command prompt grub bootloader to boot my machine up I want the control and am sick of all these prebuilt distros with hundreds of unneeded bs apps I will never ever use. Yes one day, like buying a cellphone wich I have yet to do, will probably switch to a graphical desktop but I have heard you can do everything if not more with the command prompt than with a gfx front end. The gui actually bothers me and to me is an annoyance, like cellphones, seems unneeded, unhuman, hard to use, and an insult to me and my intelligense... sure I will have one for some sake of my wife to use internet the way she knows how... but maybe someone to hold my hand at first and provide some documentation or some links to it. But for me the starting point isnt some preconfigured mess someone else said this is a quick fix for a windows user... I want the knowledge of how to configure it. apps front ends and prettiness comes later I need to know how to build the engine before installing seats... Ya sure I can goto honda and buy an accord family car but I already did that and wanna know how to build a racecar or a vintage hotrod I can take to events and lan parties or just tinker with as my thing...   Domain + VPN Setup
Posted by: cyris - 2007-02-14, 03:49 AM - Forum: Network Problems - Replies (1)

Hey everyone,

First off I'd like to say thanks to everyone in #linux-noob on efnet for helping with my day-to-day linux admin questions, znx has helped me a few times with some (id call nasty) shell scripting.

I work for a company who has 150+ staff spread out around the city in about 12 locations. Each location has 1-3 windows xp pro workstations.

These 12 locations are setup with the same network topologies, all have broadband connections (2 cable, the rest ADSL) and all are behind a dlink router.

My co-worker and I are finding administration to be a bit of a pain now as desktop configurations are not standardized and its getting harder to maintain patching and anti-virus updates, not to mention that staff share a public account on each machine they use (just not secure anymore as staff turnover is high). so I have been given the ok to setup a VPN and a PDC.

The VPN setup was a breeze with IPCOP and I found an excellent guide on howtoforge for setting up a PDC.

My problem is that we only have a 1MB upstream at our office and Windows XP profiles are about 2-3MB in size.

I think roaming profiles are out of the question, as downloading and then uploading the profile on logoff would make things slow for the user. Mandatory profiles seem like a better way to go, as the profile never gets updated when the user logs off but its still requires a download of the profile. I was looking for something more suited to my situation that would use the least amount of traffic and i came back to local profiles :S.

Is it possible for me to load a mandatory profile on all our machines, setup the machines to auth against our DC but load the mandatory profile from the local machine?

I'm also asking for any TIPS or TRICKS or what not.

Thanks!

hi,

i was going to install linux on my laptop but in the end I've decided to make a cheap desktop to run it on instead.

I don't really have much idea about hardware. I understand it but am not sure what motherboards go with which processors.

So I'm asking you guys if you can recommend some cheap hardware that can easily run linux.

I need the full load of:

case

motherboard

processor

memory

hard drive
