Linux Kernel 2.6.20 Released
Posted by: anyweb - 2007-02-05, 09:17 AM - Forum: Kernel Related - No Replies

After two months of development, Linux 2.6.20 has been released. This release includes two different virtualization implementations: KVM: full-virtualization capabilities using Intel/AMD virtualization extensions and a paravirtualization implementation usable by different hypervisors. Aditionally, 2.6.20 includes PS3 support, a fault injection debugging feature, UDP-lite support, better per-process IO accounting, relative atime, relocatable x86 kernel, some x86 microoptimizations, lockless radix-tree readside, shared pagetables for hugetbl, and many other things. Read the list of changes for details.

  more on installing Firefox 2.0
Posted by: Jennifer S - 2007-02-03, 06:46 AM - Forum: Web Browsers - Replies (4)

How embarrassing. Eight years ago, I had sysadmin powers at my university and knew my way around unix backward and forward. Now I've installed Fedora Core 6 and I'm still relying on the GUI to take care of most of my business.

At present, I'm trying to install Firefox 2.0.0.1. I un-tarred the compressed file and put it into a directory, /home/jennifer/firefox. That should be enough, right? Well, I execute "./firefox &" in the console window while in that directory, and ... Firefox 1.5.0.9 invariably runs. All I can guess is that in spite of explicitly stipulating that I wanted to run the version of firefox in /home/jennifer/firefox, it's defaulting to a system-wide link that refers to the old version.

How do I overwrite Firefox 1.5.0.9, obliterating it so that only Firefox 2 is left?

Thank you so much for helping out this noob.

  Fedora 7 Test 1 Released
Posted by: anyweb - 2007-02-01, 08:15 PM - Forum: Fedora 7 - No Replies

Quote:Announcing Fedora 7 Test 1 (6.90)Submitted February 1, 2007

Fedora 7 Test 1 has been released today. For this particular release, we only did a Desktop spin of the package collection. We are still fine tuning targetted spins of the collection as part of the merger of Core and Extras. We also produced a LiveCD that has the ability to install to your harddrive, should you wish.

oh, and a reminder

Fedora 7 will be the next release of Fedora. It is highlighted by the elimination of the distinction between Fedora Core and Fedora Extras entirely; there is only Fedora.

  Installing Firefox 2.0
Posted by: ZackaryNix52 - 2007-01-25, 10:27 PM - Forum: Web Browsers - Replies (6)

Ok, so I downloaded firefox2.0 and now I can't install it. I'm a total n00b to the entire linux world so bear with me here. I was able to download and install the flash and java plugins for firefox 1.5 due to detailed installation instructions, but all I get from the firefox site with regards to installing 2.0 is:

Quote:Installing Firefox 2

Please note that installing Firefox 2 will overwrite your existing installation of Firefox. You won't lose any of your bookmarks or browsing history, but some of your extensions and other add-ons might not work until updates for them are made available.

Yeah. As one can see, it doesn't exactly state how to go about it for us hopelessly new users. Any help would be appreciated.

Next problem, didn't want to go create another topic while I still got this one, is that I can't get my sound to work. I get this error message everytime I log on.

Quote:Sound server informational message:Error while initializing the sound driver:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

My wireless also doesn't work.

Assistance again please!

P.S. I'm using an HP Pavillion dv6110us, dual booting between Windows Media Center & Fox Desktop 1 lite.

Specs for laptop are:

Processor

AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-50; 1.6GHz

  Linux on an OLD machine
Posted by: Dutch-Lin - 2007-01-24, 11:51 AM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - No Replies

Hey peepz!

I just got this old Celeron 433Mhzmachine which has 64 mb of ram.

I was wondering if it would be possible to get a Linux on there with a desktop enviroment (GNOME, XFCE, KDE, whatever!)

I also want to to stream image+sound from a TV-Card over LAN.

I heard I can use VLC Media player for that.

What Linux Distro should I use on this old machine, which will run quite smooth and stable?
