right, i just installed my first distro of linux today and i'm still finding my feet with it. i've been trying to get sound working but in YaST i always get an error when manually selecting the soundcard (USB Audiophile). the error is as follows
An eror occured during the installation of
Audiophile 24/96
The kernel module snd-ice1712 for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
anyone got any ideas on how to resolve this?
cheers,
costello

Hi folks,
AMD Athlon54 X2 512Kx2 socket AM2 3800
slamd64-11.0
Just completed installing the captioned OS with everything installed except GAME. This is an experiment. slamd64 is now running on the box.
I'm going to setup virtual mail boxes on this server, allowing my friends using the mail server sending and receiving mails. Please advise;
1) how to check whether sendmail is running and configured properly.
2) how to setup virtual mail boxes. Where can I find relevant tutorial.
TIA
B.R.

Upgrading the Kernel |

Ok, heres the situation. Linux (meaning Fedora Core 5) is installed perfectly fine on my desktop (an old Dell Dimension) and it works fine but when I install it on my laptop (an HP Pavilion dv6110us) it has all sorts of problems. From vanishing mice, to just not booting at all. After looking around for a while, I saw where I could solve the mouse problem by booting to runlevel 3 and then starting the x server there, but this didn't address the problem of it freezing during bootup at times. I downloaded and installed FC6 but it had the same problems that FC5 had so eventually, after trying several other distributions, I found FOX desktop which seems to always boot and operate properly except for the sound card and wireless NIC thing.
This is where I'm at now. It appears that Fox is based on FC4, so I assume that the problem with the drivers is that it uses an outdated kernel. My question now now are:
1. How does one check to see what version of the Linux Kernel is being used with his distribution?
2. How does one download and upgrade to the most recent one? I may be able to handle the download part, but upgrading the kernel on my own is way beyond my abilities at this point I believe.
3. If I upgrade the kernel to...say the kernel that FC6 uses, should I expect Fox to behave in the same way that FC5 and 6 did in that it'd pick up the habit of booting only if it feels generous?
Another reason for wanting to upgrade the kernel, though I'm not sure if this actually has anything to do with it, is that when trying the firefox installation instructions that was given by hybrid, it wouldn't work in Fox but later after I tried it in FC5 on my desktop, it worked perfectly. Any help would be appreciated, even if it was with the previous problem of FC not booting at times.

But I require CAD programs similar to AutoCAD, and electronic circuit simulators, and PCB Layout software similar to OrCAD... additionally I need to create Microsoft word compatible documents, which I assume open office will allow me to do...
Am I going to be able to make the switch??

alright so I finally came to a conclusion...i'm going to use gnome exclusively
here's the problem, when I uninstalled kde, rebooted my machine, and logged in I got the msg asking me if I wanted to make gnome.desktop my default. sooo I says sure, and it loads up the ugly non-functional basic desktop that you get from installing x.
can I just re-yum gnome or is there going to be some accrobatics I'm going to have to go threw in order to get gnome back?

ok so stuck in the windows xp disk to re-install windows... but it never runs installer im not sure as to why. it analyzes my hardware then the screen goes black and does nothing. so i dunno if its linux confusing it or what but how do I uninstall fedora or just remove it from my computer so i can attemp at running xp?

I just had Suse Linux 10.0 installed on my Computer by CompUsa. They installed the Linux Operating System using their 15" monitor I'm guessing. I have a 19" monitor, so when I got home I plugged in my monitor and the highest resolution I can go to is 1024x768 which is crap. How do I fix the OS so I can go up to 1600x1200(which my monitor CAN handle)? Another question:I have Windows x64 installed on a raid 1 setup and linux installed on a separate 80g Hd, does linux have a program equal to window's device manager? I want to see where it says what video cards I have, cause I have dual 6800 Ultras in Sli, I'd also like to check the monitor and maybe install a monitor driver.
