  Wireless Internet in Suse 10.2
Posted by: kabifff - 2006-12-17, 06:09 AM - Forum: Wireless - Replies (1)

I posted the same issue on the SuSE forum, but I thought I would pick the brains of you other users too. Suse 10.2 Claims to have native broadcom wireless support and it has absolutely no problem finding the wireless cards in my HP Pavilion zx5060 or my Dell Latitude D610. They do not, however, work.

I wasn't expecting great things from the broadcom driver and support built into suse, and I'm grateful that it detected my cards, but I at least thought NDISWrapper would work. It won't. I configured it just like I configured it in 10.1, using the same drivers and whatnot, but it won't work at all. Has anybody played with this and if so, what have you found or learned? Even if you don't have a solution, let me know what you've at least tried. Any feedback at all will be greatly appreciated.

I do know that both my dell and HP use the same driver, bcmwl5a.inf , but that's not what comes with SuSE. It's another broadcom driver.

Thanks guys.

  Wireless Internet in Suse 10.2
Posted by: kabifff - 2006-12-17, 06:01 AM - Forum: SUSE - No Replies

I can't for the life of me get any sort of wireless to work in Suse 10.2 The "native broadcom support" is worthless in both of my laptops and where NDISWrapper used to work it doesn't anymore. I reformatted and did a clean install of Suse using all new NDISWrapper settings and still I get nothing. Has anybody out there gotten this to work? It's making me crazy and it's the only thing holding me to windows right now. I really want to get this going and any help would be appreciated.

  My Gnome/Ubuntu custome theme.

I dig it, and just to update...as per the suggestion...

I obviously removed some of the standard panel bars, and updated the icon/theme packages.

The Icon Package I am using is Dropline Neu!.

The Apple-like taskbar at the bottom was taken from the basic install of gdesklets StarterBar. It was relatively easy to setup.

how do i get firefox to play videos via mplayer plugin
Posted by: anyweb - 2006-12-16, 08:36 PM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 6 - Replies (17)

hi guys,

i'd like my media to play in mplayer instead of totem.

when i click on some (usually mms or windows video links) totem starts and then complains that it can't play the file.

if i run the file via cli (the terminal) as below, then it works fine in mplayer

Quote:[anyweb@localhost ~]$ mplayer mms://a1441.v165327.c16532.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1441/16532/v0001/nhl.download.akamai.com/16532/wm.nhl.na-central/comp/best_of/07/bestof_theweek_vol_7_700.wmvMPlayer 1.0rc1-rpm.livna.org-4.1.1 © 2000-2006 MPlayer Team

CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1

Compiled with runtime CPU detection.

mplayer: could not connect to socket

mplayer: No such file or directory

Failed to open LIRC support. You will not be able to use your remote control.

Playing mms://a1441.v165327.c16532.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1441/16532/v0001/nhl.download.akamai.com/16532/wm.nhl.na-central/comp/best_of/07/bestof_theweek_vol_7_700.wmv.

so my question is, how can I force firefox to use mplayer instead of totem for these files ?

cheers

It's been a while since any major action has taken place with RPM (the command itself) so it was pleasing to see this:

RPM is moving forward for the future .. good to hear :)

  Firewall/Router/VPN
Posted by: psyferre - 2006-12-14, 05:31 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (4)

Hey folks,

I've been searching the forums and will continue to do so, but so far I haven't found any posts pertaining to my question... and no good info on the net that isn't 4 years old. If I've missed an entire topic devoted to this subject please forgive me and point me in the right direction :)

I'm looking to setup a linux box as a firewall/router/VPN endpoint for my company. We have a small network ~18 machines running OSX and Windows XP. We have a static IP and will be running several switches and WAPs behind it, along with a centOS box running trixbox.

As a linux n00b I'm trying to find a solution that maybe isn't completely terminal based, and probably a full distro vs ipcop, since I want to easily add-on stuff in the future. The VPN would need to be able to have remote client's connect from mac or pc, and possibly another VPN endpoint at some point in the future.

Does anyone have any recommendations for which distro to use and whether to download/purchase CDs or ftp install?

Thanks,

Psy

Just got anywebs email, sorry for not logging in, since I upgraded to FC6 and opera I simply forgot, I have been visiting as a guest ;)

Anyway, FC6 is amazing, and I've not booted windows for 12 months since installing fc4 (then 5 now 6), I have vmware / wine for the two windows apps I still use (ftp-rush under wine and nokia phone software on vmware) but here is my fc6 desktop, just to let you know the help i got in the beginning from here and the fedora forums really helped..
