Dynamic DNS with static IP |

Hi All,
I have a Linux machine having static IP configuration ( without DHCP). And if this configuration is changed, should this information be updated in the DNS server?
In short, does Dynamic DNS make sense with static IP configuration?
Any comment in this regard is highly appreciated.
With Regards,
nsv

Firefox 2.0 runs from GUI not terminal |

Hi there,
I sort of installed FF 2.0: it runs from the applications menu and the "web browser" button in the GUI, but if I run 'firefox' from the terminal, I still get version 1.08.
Here was my procedure:
Downloaded the tar.gz archive from firefox's site to /home/
Untarred to home:
cd
tar -xvzf firefox-2.0.tar.gz
then ran the firefox file in the directory
I also lost my bookmarks in the old version.
Can someone tell me what I did wrong?
Thanks,
Nic

Why did acpi=ht fix my network problem? |

Hello,
I ran a search for acpi=ht, but didn't get any hits on the forums. I'm hoping someone can help me solve a mystery.
I was having trouble reaching the network with FC4. I had already configured other machines just fine, so I was stumped. On booting up the eth0 would get an IP address just fine, and in the network configuration screen the eth0 was active. I went over the configuration again and again, but neither Firefox nor the update program could connect.
Then, using a suggestion from forums.fedoraforum.org/archive, I changed my grub config from this
title Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.1369_FC4)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.img
title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
to this
title Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.1369_FC4)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 acpi=ht
initrd /initrd-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.img
title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1
Now I can connect just fine. Great. Trouble is I don't know why. The other forum doesn't explain what acpi=ht is or how it fixed the problem. Can someone here help?
Thanks a lot,
Nic

ifup eth1 |

When i installed fc6 it used my PCI NIC wich was defined as eth0, but after install i changed to my nforce on-board lan card wich is defined as eth1.
Now, every time I boot linux i have to type "ifup eth1" to get an ip from DHCP and be connected to internet. How can I fix this so it happens automagically? :)This is BTW a question I've been wondering for years so please help me someone.

When you finally discover Linux there is a rush of making it work for the first time:
Quote:> Dutch-Lin [~*@*.nl]#linux-noobDutch-Lin | good morning!!!!
Dutch-Lin | Hey ZNX is here!! (actually I wasn't just my client was!)
Dutch-Lin | I am running Linux dudes!!! Fedora Core 6! With WiFi on my laptop!!
Dutch-Lin | The only thing I wanna get running is playing encrypted Dvd's
Dutch-Lin | P38 helped me out a little
> P38 [e911@rl0.net] #linux-noob
Dutch-Lin | p38 is back! (actually he wasn't it was just his client rejoining!)
Dutch-Lin | uhm...can anyone tell me what plugins I need with Xine to play dvd's? Or what do I need to play encrypted dvd's in Mplayer
Dutch-Lin | Ai...... no sound....but it played an encrypted DVD :)
Dutch-Lin | Watch me!!! I'm goin!!!
Dutch-Lin | ow...it wasn't encrypted :P
Dutch-Lin | I think I'm the only person that's awake atm....
Dutch-Lin | well dudes I better get goin' gotta go to work! see ya'll later!
* Dutch-Lin has signed off IRC (Quit: Ik ga weg) #linux-noob
Woot! Once we see him again tonight on IRC, we will help him with the rest of the settings! So if you are waiting or still deciding to change, its possible! You can get it and once you do it is soooo much fun :)

I will host the game friday/saturday/sunday night CET (that's central european time)
you are VERY welcome to join in and have a frag
watch out for miss_lia though (slapper) she has a mean rail_gun
to join simply be on the #linux-noob IRC channel and see the invite
the ip will always be whatever www.linux-noob.com resolves to, and with the default UDP port
anyone interested in making this an event ???
fun ??
