  wifi_on_Atheros AR5005GS_wireles network 802.11b/g
Posted by: jsn06 - 2006-12-02, 11:30 AM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 6 - No Replies

Atheros AR5005GS Wireless Network Adapter (802.11b/g) in this machine is supported by the MadWiFi driver.

Code:
# su -
# vi /etc/yum.repos.d/livna.repo

Then add this:

Code:
[livna]
name=Livna for Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base
baseurl=
http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/
http://livna.cat.pdx.edu/fedora/$rele...$basearch/
http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/livna...$basearch/
http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirro...$basearch/
failovermethod=priority
#mirrorlist=http://rpm.livna.org/mirrorlist-5
enabled=0
gpgcheck=1

(NB that i have the "enabled" bit set to "0" (off) in this file so that the livna-stable repository will not conflict with our RPMForge repositories for automatic updates.)

Be sure there is a carriage return (blank line) at the bottom of the file. Click the "save" icon in gvim or save with :wq

When all is done:

Code:
yum update && yum install madwifi

Wait until it gets installed with no errors.

Now check and see if you have in your network connection the Atheros Communicator detected. To open network connections just type 'neat' as root, then Hardware section and you should see Atheros in there.

Manually load the module with:

Code:
/sbin/modprobe ath_pci

Manually create the configuration files, network interface configuration scripts are located in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and are named ifcfg-xxxx, where xxxx is the name of the interface.

MadWiFI driver creates an interface named ath0, so you should create a /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ath0 with:

Code:
vi /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ath0

And its contents:

Code:
DEVICE=ath0
NAME=ath0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes
MODE=Managed
ESSID=

Again save with :wq

ESSID entry should be set to the SSID of the wireless access point you are trying to connect to. If you omit this line, the card will simply attempt to connect to the most powerful access point. If you want to know what access points are available you can use the iwlist command:

Code:
/sbin/iwlist ath0 scan

Start up the interface.

Code:
/sbin/ifup ath0

Then "Hello Wireless World" on fedora with Madwifi driver!

I just love this free world and many thanks to this forum and #linux-noob @ efnet!

  linux-noob.com inaccessible last night
Posted by: anyweb - 2006-12-02, 08:22 AM - Forum: Site News - Replies (1)

last night for some time linux-noob.com was inaccessible, and here's why, the nameservers that point the ip to linux-noob.com was being DDOS'd...

Quote:Posted by davidu at 12:52pm PST on 9-28-2006

Latest Update: Our webserver just got way overloaded and was pretty hard to access over the last couple hours. I've rebooted the machine and it's doing fine. I'll monitor the machine and we're going to ensure that it's stable. We will also ensure a failover webserver is properly configured in the future at a different location. There was no DNS outage during this problem as the web server does nothing besides serve webpages and do some email for us.

and see below (email from me to the person who runs everydns.net)

I've read your updates here

where you say there was no DNS outage,

well I was experiencing it, so that's why I'm emailing you, on IRC I asked a few friends from different parts of the world to ping linux-noob.com (they couldnt) and then to ping the everydns name servers (they couldnt)

you can see snippets of that conversation below

so, this email is to wish you good luck in fixing this issue and also to inform you that DNS was inaccesible for me and others last night.

  using mount --bind with vsftpd
Posted by: anyweb - 2006-12-01, 12:26 PM - Forum: FTP Server - Replies (2)

if you've ever setup vsftpd and noticed that when you login it defaults the user to their home directory

eg: user anyweb will ftp in to

/home/anyweb/

then how can you let that user access another folder outside of their home ?

using bind !

here's a quick example

Code:
[root@www anyweb]# mkdir ftp2
[root@www anyweb]# mount --bind /ftp2  /home/anyweb/ftp2
[root@www anyweb]# mkdir ftp3
[root@www anyweb]# mount --bind /ftp3  /home/anyweb/ftp3

now when you ftp in, you'll see the contents of /home/anyweb PLUS ther'll also be two additional folders called ftp2 and ftp3 and anything you dump in there or read from there comes directly from the 'real' directories

/ftp2

and

/ftp3

got it ?

thanks to jY in #linux-noob for this tip

cheers

  Fail to visit homepage
Posted by: satimis - 2006-12-01, 03:19 AM - Forum: LAMP - Replies (18)

Hi folks,

Ubuntu-6.06.1-LAMP-server-amd64

Apache2

Domain: satimis.homelinux.com

(registered with dynsdn.com)

Apache is running on this server which is for test purpose.

On browser

[/url]http://satimis.homelinux.com

https://satimis.homelinux.com

satimis.homelinux.com

http://satimis.homelinux.com:443

https://satimis.homelinux.com:443

satimis.homelinux.com:443

http://satimis.homelinux.com:8080

https://satimis.homelinux.com:8080

satimis.homelinux.com:8080

all of them failed to visit the homepage on /var/www/. They only hung there until time out.

Both ports 443 and 8080 are open and not stealth. I have them checked on;

[url=http://www.grc.com/]http://www.grc.com/

SheildsUp

# cat /etc/hosts

Code:
127.0.0.1       localhost.localdomain   localhost
192.168.0.100   sever1.example.com   server1
ubuntu

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1     ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

However

//localhost

//localhost:443

//localhost:8080

all displayed the homepage.

There is no hardware firewall between server and Internet. The server is connected with a CAT5 cable to an ADSL modem. Another end of the ADSL modem is connected to telephone wall socket with a telephone line. The ADSL modem is supplied by ISP and does not require setup.

Please help. TIA

  new service to our members !
Posted by: anyweb - 2006-11-30, 10:54 AM - Forum: Site News - Replies (15)

hi guys,

first of all thanks to Ritter for pointing this out to me,

secondly thanks to znx and grep for testing it, and thirdly thanks to google for providing the service !

quick FAQ

1. what is this ?

it's a gmail account with a difference, instead of yourname@gmail.com you'll get yourname@linux-noob.com

2. how do I sign up ?

contact anyweb@linux-noob.com directly (for now) with the following info

desired username=

firstname=

lastname=

3. how do I access it ?

Once you have been provided with the temporary password to login, please go to

[/url][url=http://email.linux-noob.com]http://email.linux-noob.com and login !

please note: this is still in TESTING phase at the moment but I hope to have it rolled out properly soon.

4. known issues ?

currently until i redirect mail provider, you can only SEND mail using your new username@linux-noob.com email address,

replies to that address will not reach your inbox,

I will fix that soon.

feel free to test this by emailing ME with your new email account and the subject 'testing email@linux-noob.com'

  Are my hard drive(s) dying?
Posted by: hybrid - 2006-11-25, 12:53 PM - Forum: Fedora Core Release 6 - Replies (12)

Almost every boot of my FC6 system, I see these errors:

Code:
hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
ide: failed opcode was: 0xb0
hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdb: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }

(from dmesg | tail)

Are both hda (newish Western Digital) and hdb (older Maxtor) dying or is there something else going on?
