  media/file server
Posted by: p_o_b - 2006-11-19, 10:44 PM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - No Replies

Ok, here is the setup: Macbook Pro(main pc) running osx(main os) and MCE via bootcamp (for gaming and pushing media to...) an Xbox360 all connected via 802.11g. I have an older pc that I want to turn into a file/video server for pushing video thru mce to the 360. I am completely new to linux having only played with the desktop version of ubuntu.

1. what is the best version of linux to go with? (I have tried ubuntu server and freenas so far and with ubuntu server I seemed unable to get my wifi setup though it seemed to configure properly on setup and freeNAS would not boot after install)

2. has anyone done this or anything similar?

3. I would also like to have the server box handle bittorent downloads so I don't have to leave the notebook on all the time.

any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Help!!! I cant get lots of things to work!
Posted by: Ace of Azrogoth - 2006-11-18, 05:29 AM - Forum: How Do I? - Replies (2)

Okay. Several problems.

1. I have followed the directions to get all the extras such as livna, mplayer, and flashplayer, and they work fine mostly.

The problem is that other than basic desktop notification sounds, audio seems to be disabled somehow. All my applications make no sound whatsoever, including flash and mplayer. The only exception was the Rhythmbox Music player but now that does not work either.

2. I have figured out how to install rpms, but can not get yum to install a file I have downloaded. I have tried many variations to commanding yum to insall a file, but yum always says that "nothing to do"

code: yum install -x /home/asa/desktop/et-linux-2.60.x86.run

Loading "installonlyn" plugin

Error: Need to pass a list of pkgs to install

any suggestions?

Quote:009 fixes9 update This update contains updated versions of OpenSSH (version 4.3p2), OpenSSL (0.9.7l), Apache (1.3.37) and Squid (2.5.STABLE14). This update also contains a kernel update to version 2.4.33.3. It also tightens the firewall script to correct a potential problem if hostile machines are directly connected to the RED network.

ubernoob -- what distro is best for gaming n graphics
Posted by: ubernoob - 2006-11-16, 01:11 AM - Forum: Just Starting Linux - Replies (5)

two people want to start using linux --

my son because XP sux -- but he wants to still be able to play Counterstrike and WOW (World of Warcraft)

I do graphics and hate XP.

I've already investigated several linux graphics programs that I want to use:

Gimp

cinepaint

blender

inkscape

xara

I was thinking to use ubuntu but I don't really know what to use.

There's a couple of Windows graphics programs I'd like to port over to linux, so I was going to try and use Wine to do so.

I want to use Macromedia MX studio (Flash and Dreamweaver)

I'd like to be able to port in Corel Painter IX.5 and a few graphics programs I have that ran on Win 98

But the truth is I don't know a damn thing about linux and don't even know how to install it on a computer. My son's computer sits ready to have it installed on it now.

I hope someone here will know something about a direction to point us in for our needs. I'm especially concerned about peripherals and drivers, since I have a scanner, printer, tablet, card reader, external hard drive, etc. etc.

  slight outage
Posted by: anyweb - 2006-11-15, 06:53 PM - Forum: Site News - No Replies

hi guys, the site was unaccessable due to replacement of the firewall,

it was producing journal io errors and the advice was to replace the hard disc, which meant taking that server down, replacing the hdd and starting it up again, reconfiguring it and then changing all the dns pointers for my domains to the newly acquired ip

all should be ok now, downtime was approx 30 minutes.

  XGL in windows?
Posted by: kabifff - 2006-11-13, 04:06 PM - Forum: Windows XP - Replies (2)

I've fallen in love with the XGL Interface in Linux, but is there anything comparable for Windows XP? I would love something that could at lease mimic the wobbly windows and otherwise. I'm not so concerned with Aero Glass since I don't have the proper graphics card, but XGL runs great on here. Is there possibly a skin I could use?

I like the way that Vista goes online and automagically installs drivers for any device not installed during setup, nicely done !
