Hi, I'm new to linux (Fedora) at the moment (1:25PM GMT) I am downloading the Fedora Core 6 "Zod", this will be my first time using linux properly, (been a windows guy for to long), I've a couple of questions if someone could answer that'd be great, cheers.
Q1: Can I play DVDs out of the box (just put the disk in and watch)
Q2: Can I burn CDs/DVDs out of the box
Q3: Will OpenOffice come on the DVDiso or will I need to download/install it seperatally
Q4: Can I do photo editing (like adobe photoshop)
Q5: Can I play MP3s
Q6: Can I play .rmvb's or another format like .wmv
Q7: Is updating fedora as easy as updating windows/mac-osx
Q8: Can I download torrents on fedora just like on windows

First off, let me say, this is a great website. I've spent a couple of days lurking in the dark reading. I have recently formatted and killed windows and installed FC5. Then I turned around and upgrade to FC6 a week later. I am Unix Admin for Travelocity so I have a little experince, but most of my back ground is in Windows. I must say I prefer Unix/Linux. So I decided to move to a Linux desktop at home. I learned Windows by using it, so may as well take that approach with Linux. It's amazing how reading reviews of Vista will cause people to jump ship, not that I wasn't sick of the viruses and spyware anyway.
Anyway, I hope you guys/gals don't mind stupid questions.....

FreeNX (Fedora Core 5, 6) |

Free NX is the solution that MANY of us all needed:
I'm on a windows or linux box, and need to remote control another linux box... securely... over ssh only... SSL secure... oh, and with GUI too!
Enter NX...
Server Setup:
On your linux box (nx server)
Open terminal, and su to root
guess what - that's it! The yum install does ALL the config for you!
You should only need to copy the client.id_dsa.key from /etc/nxserver to your client,
then properly import the key into the client setup
Client Setup:
Windows Box
Download the Windows client from www.nomachine.com
Install - take defaults all the way through.
Linux (Fedora core 5, 6)
download linux client from www.nomachine.com
remember where you saved the file - I saved mine here: /home/dan/nxclient/
open terminal and su to root:
Code: yum localinstall nxclient*.rpm
You have to do it this way, because of dependency issues - it took me forever to figure this one out - you can't install just by rpm -ivh ...
that's it, now config the clients...
Client Configuration (Win & Nix):
The Session wizard:
Code: Session name: what ever you want to call it...
Host: IP address or DNS name of your server
Port: 22
Internet connection - slide to your speed
Next>
Code: Drop down boxes:
Right one is Unix
Left one - depends on you desktop environment - choose KDE or Gnome
Size of your remote desktop: select your resolution
**** Check the box for Enable SSL encryption of all traffic ****
Next>
Code: Check the box for Advanced Configuration dialog
Finish>
Advanced Configuration dialog:
Code: Click the "Key" button, then Import.
Browse to the client.id_dsa.key file you got from your server setup.
Save>
Save>
That's it!
If I didn't make myself clear on the client config, click here for a video showing how to do it...
NX Client Config - Video
Mirror on google video - Not as clear, but works better than mine...
Be patient - it's a 6 MB video file
Enjoy!

Problem with mplayer |

Right - maybe this is due to me messing around with the ATi X driver before noticing the FC6 script, but I did the yum-install of mplayer (using the instructions from this site) and unfortunately it seems not to want to play ball...
Launching from the applications menu gets nowhere, so I thought "ah, probably segfaulting or something equallly as irritating" so launched it from the console - and get the following error:
"mplayer: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied"
I'm pretty much full time windows so I'm really none the wiser on this - the reason I think I've broken something installing the ATi drivers without the FC6 tweaks is because it references to libGL, which I presume may be part of either the ATi distro or something to do with FC6 which I have now buggered!
Anyone shed any light? I was logged in as root when I got the error, I've yet to try it as a standard user.
Cheers :)

Just Installed Ubuntu 6.06LTS, from a downloaded ISO. was connected to the net during install and all looks good, I have used "Synaptic package manager" to add some bizzo and ticked all the repository boxes so I could get Aircrack and Kismet instaled. That much was surprisingly easy for someone who has only ever installed fedora and red hat, but never been able to do much with them, however Ubuntu has my interest and I want to do more.
I intend to do some security checking of Wlans, my own first, I am told these two apps (Aircrack and Kismet) can crack a wpa-psk in under an hour. I have downloaded the Atheros drivers for the Cisco-CB21AG pcmcia card I intend to use but am a bit stumped as to how to get them into the notebook (IBM thinkpad R52). Following the newbie guide at aircrack-ng. I would get an error message in the terminal telling me that "make" was an unknown command, so I went back into synaptic and found "make", "makedev" and "makedepend". I installed these and now make tries to run but gives me...
tsp10402@SN-GHG:~/Desktop/madwifi-0.9.2$ make
/bin/sh: line 0: cd: /lib/modules/2.6.15-27-386/build: No such file or directoryMakefile.inc:89: *** /lib/modules/2.6.15-27-386/build is missing, please set KERNELPATH. Stop.
tsp10402@SN-GHG:~/Desktop/madwifi-0.9.2$
I assume I am missing some of the kernel files but don't know what they are or how to get them installed.
Thanks for any assistance.

Red Hats response ! |

Quote:Red Hat responds.
The opportunity for Linux just got bigger. Oracle's support for Linux reaffirms Red Hat's technical industry leadership and the end of proprietary Unix. It's no accident that Red Hat was chosen #1 in value two years running. Want to know what else we think? Read on.
Red Hat & Oracle Partnership
Q: Does Oracle's recent announcement change Red Hat's partnership with Oracle?
A: No. Red Hat has had a productive 7-year relationship with Oracle. Red Hat will continue to work closely with Oracle to optimize Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss middleware subscriptions for Oracle products, and to support joint customers.
Red Hat & JBoss Subscriptions
Q: Does Oracle's announcement include support for the Red Hat Application Stack, JBoss, Hibernate, Red Hat GFS, Red Hat Cluster Suite, and Red Hat Directory Server?
A: No. Oracle does not support any of these leading open source products.
Hardware Compatibility
Q: Oracle says their Linux support includes the same hardware compatibility and certifications as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Is this true?
A: No. Oracle has stated they will make changes to the code independently of Red Hat. As a result these changes will not be tested during Red Hat's hardware testing and certification process, and may cause unexpected behavior. Hence Red Hat hardware certifications are invalidated.
Software Compatibility
Q: Oracle says their Linux support includes the same software compatibility and ISV certifications of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Is this true?
A: No. Oracle has stated they will make changes to the code independently of Red Hat. These changes will not be tested during Red Hat's software testing and certification process, and may cause unexpected behavior. Hence Red Hat software certifications are invalidated.
Binary Compatibility
Q: Will Oracle's Linux support be binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux so that my applications continue to work?
A: There is no way to guarantee that changes made by Oracle will maintain API (Application Programming Interface) or ABI (Application Binary Interface) compatibility; there may be material differences in the code that will result in application failures. Compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux can only be verified by Red Hat's internal test suite.
Source Code Compatibility
Q: Will Oracle's product result in a "fork" of the operating system?
A: Yes. The changes Oracle has stated they will make will result in a different code base than Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Simply put, this derivative will not be Red Hat Enterprise Linux and customers will not have the assurance of compatibility with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux hardware and application ecosystem..
Updates
Q: Oracle says they will provide the same updates as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Can they do this?
A: There are multiple requirements to building binary compatible software. One piece is the source code; another is the build and test environment. While Oracle may be able to take the source code at some point after a Red Hat update release, obviously their build and test environment will be inherently different than that of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. For similar reasons, there is no guarantee that the source code for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux update will work correctly when integrated into Oracle's modified Linux code base.
Support & Maintenance Lifecycle
Q: In order to get support and maintenance for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, do you need to upgrade to the most recent version?
A: No. Red Hat subscribers enjoy support and updates for all versions for up to 7 years. Throughout that time, Red Hat provides regular maintenance releases as part of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription. This is supplemented through our support services by a 'hot-fix' process that provides critical bug fixes on a customer-specific basis. Oracle "reserves the right to desupport certain Enterprise Linux program releases" as part of their Oracle Enterprise Linux support policies.
Support Level Flexibility
Q: Does Red Hat allow you to tailor your support level to your workload?
A: Yes. Many customers match their Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription level to their application SLA requirements. For example, customers may choose a Basic subscription for non-mission critical file and print servers, while selecting Premium subscriptions for database servers. Oracle does not allow this flexibility - their support policy reads: "If acquiring Enterprise Linux Premier Support, all of your Oracle supported systems must be supported with Enterprise Linux Premier Support."
Security
Q: Can Oracle produce timely security updates to Red Hat Enterprise Linux as they stated?
A: No. There will be a delay between the time a Red Hat Enterprise Linux update is issued and the time the source code makes its way to Oracle. There is no guarantee that the source code for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux update will work correctly when integrated into Oracle's Linux code base; this integration and test will take additional time. In the case where the update corrects critical security flaws, Oracle customers may be exposed to additional risk.
Linux Assurance
Q: Red Hat Enterprise Linux has government security certifications including Common Criteria Evaluated Assurance Level (EAL) 4+/Controlled Access Protection Profile (CAPP). Will Oracle's version of Linux inherit these certifications?
A: No. Common Criteria evaluations are conducted on a specific configuration of software and hardware. Any changes to the software such as those Oracle has announced will invalidate certification.
Customer Collaboration
Q: Will Oracle's Linux customers have the same degree of influence over Oracle's Linux as Red Hat's customers do with Red Hat Enterprise Linux?
A: The support we provide for Red Hat Enterprise Linux starts when Red Hat and its customers collaborate in the design of new versions. This collaboration extends through the development, testing, and production deployment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Vendors of a derivative distribution are simply not positioned to provide their customers the same collaboration opportunity.
Support Partners
Q: Hardware vendors such as Dell, HP, and IBM provide support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. How is Oracle's support offering different?
A: Red Hat's hardware partners provide front line support to customers, backed by Red Hat. Red Hat has a close contractual relationship with these partners, which requires training, well defined escalation paths, Red Hat back-line support, and cooperative customer issue management. Our joint customers enjoy the same degree of collaborative participation as any Red Hat customer.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison plays rough with the leading Linux software distributor.
October 26, 2006
Oracle's bid to steal business away from Red Hat has thrust the world's largest Linux software distributor into an extremely challenging position. It might even signal the beginning of the end for Red Hat, industry analysts and insiders said.
Red Hat's shared tumbled 25 percent Thursday after Oracle, the giant database software company, said it would offer support services for Red Hat's open source Linux software

Enabling Desktop Effects in FC6 w/ ATi RS482? |

Howdy,
I'm a super Linux n00b here and need some help.
I'm trying to enable Desktop Effects in Fedora Core 6 but I'm told that Desktop Effects cannot be enabled. I've been told in passing that I need to install the ATi Open Source Driver.
Not only do I not know where to get it, but I wouldn't know how to install it even if I did. I can't even manage to install Firefox 2 at the moment. :P
Anyways, help in the form of a nice little step by step would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys. B)
