Dynamic DNS Issue |

Hi All,
While testing the DDNS server configuration with proprietory DHCP and DDNS client, I noticed a strange thing. Any help here is appreciated.
Pre-condition:
----------------
DHCP and DDNS server are running on a single LINUX machine having following version:
Linux ns1.testdns.com 2.6.9-34.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Feb 24 16:54:53 EST 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
The DHCP server was able to generate the dynamic IP Address as specified in the dhcpd.conf.
DDNS server was able to add the entries in the forward and reverse zone files eg : testdns.com and 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa
This ensures that DHCP and DDNS server settings are correct.
Test Condition:
---------------
I modified the client host name and restarted the named service so that changes are reflected in the zone files. The forward zone file was expected to be updated with the modified host name.
Results:
----------
Forward zone had two entries viz; one with old host name and other with new host name.
Analysis:
------------
I have found that this is happening because in DDNS client code,
before updating the server database with modified host name, we are checking whether a record with

Enabling Desktop Effects in FC6 w/ ATi RS482? |

Howdy,
I'm a super Linux n00b here and need some help.
I'm trying to enable Desktop Effects in Fedora Core 6 but I'm told that Desktop Effects cannot be enabled. I've been told in passing that I need to install the ATi Open Source Driver.
Not only do I not know where to get it, but I wouldn't know how to install it even if I did. I can't even manage to install Firefox 2 at the moment. :P
Anyways, help in the form of a nice little step by step would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys. B)

Did they break yum? |

Did the Red Hat guys break yum in FC5 because of the release of FC6 or is it just me?
I'm getting the following output from a yum update:
Code: Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Update Process
Setting up repositories
updates [1/4]
Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: updates
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: updates
I will be moving over to FC6 soon, but I might not be finished with FC5 yet!?
Anyone else have this problem?
(on an unrelated note - posting this from Firefox 2.0 - absolutely awesome!!)

Fedora Wireless |

Hey all,
well I installed fedora core 6 :) and my internal network and orinoco card don't work :(
my Internet Wireless card gets picked up as lspci shows:
Code: 06:02.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 [AirForce 54g] 802.11a/b/g PCI Express Transceiver (rev 02)
However when trying to active it via neat I get the following error messages:
Code: Oct 24 21:55:06 localhost kernel: SoftMAC: empty ratesinfo?
Oct 24 21:55:06 localhost kernel: SoftMAC: empty ratesinfo?
Oct 24 21:55:06 localhost kernel: bcm43xx: set security called, .active_key = 0, .level = 1, .enabled = 1, .encrypt = 1
Oct 24 21:55:06 localhost kernel: SoftMAC: Associate: Scanning for networks first.
Oct 24 21:55:06 localhost kernel: SoftMAC: Associate: failed to initiate scan. Is device up?
Oct 24 21:55:06 localhost kernel: bcm43xx: PHY connected
Oct 24 21:55:06 localhost firmware_helper[2984]: Loading of /lib/firmware/bcm43xx_microcode5.fw for bcm43xx driver failed: No such file or directory
Oct 24 21:55:06 localhost kernel: bcm43xx: Error: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed.
Oct 24 21:55:06 localhost kernel: bcm43xx: core_up for active 802.11 core failed (-2)
I can also see my orinoco card in lspci:
Code: 07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5211 802.11ab NIC (rev 01)
However this is not picked up with the neat or if I issue the iwconfig command I only see the
internal wireless card.
Any ideas?

5 easy steps to installing Fedora Core Release 6 goodies. |

thanks Randall for reminding me to do this :)
Please note this is for the 32 bit installs
if you find this article useful, then I'd appreciate if you'd digg it !
as root (su -) install the current livna rpm to get access to livna's goodies
Code: rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/i386/livna-release-6-1.noarch.rpm
now let's add freshrpm's to that list
Code: rpm -ivh http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/6/i386/RPMS.freshrpms/freshrpms-release-1.1-1.fc.noarch.rpm
ok, done. Now lets have some fun:-
1. let's install the MP3 plugins (currently gstreamer-plugins-mp3 is BAD so will error, but try again in a day or two)
Code: yum -y install xmms-mp3 gstreamer-plugins-mp3 libmad libid3tag
2. lets install the Flash plugin
use vi to create a new file
Code: vi /etc/yum.repos.d/flash.repo
now copy the text below and paste it into the new file (press I to INSERT text...)
Quote:[macromedia]name=Macromedia for i386 Linuxbaseurl=http://macromedia.mplug.org/rpm/
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://macromedia.mplug.org/FEDORA-GPG-KEY
save the file with :wq
Code: yum -y install flash-plugin
3. Next up for multimedia action and DVD playing we will install xine
Code: yum -y install xine xine-lib xine-skins
4. A Fedora install would not be complete without the coolest video player mplayer, so let's install it
Code: yum -y --disablerepo=livna install mplayer mplayer-skins mplayer-fonts
and now we'll install the windows codecs for mplayer
Code: wget http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/essential-20061022.tar.bz2
gtar xjvf essential-20061022.tar.bz2
mkdir /usr/local/lib/win32
mv essential-20061022/* /usr/local/lib/win32
now we need to install the mplayer plugin for web browsers
Code: yum -y install mplayerplug-in
5. Install Java !
Download Java JDK 5.0 Update 8 (not 9 as it causes problems)
Get over to Sun's Java download site and choose the Linux RPM in self-extracting file version.
Linux RPM in self-extracting file jdk-1_5_0_08-linux-i586-rpm.bin 45.48 MB
Open a Terminal.
Become root:
Change back to your home directory (instead of root's home directory):
Where "username" is your normal username.
Run the file that you downloaded, by doing:
Code: sh Desktop/jdk-1_5_0_08-linux-i586-rpm.bin
It will display a license agreement. You can press q to skip it.
Type "yes" when it asks you if you agree. Then it will install Java.
Finally, you can enable the Java plugin for your web browser:
Code: ln -s /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_08/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
cheers

I can't for the life of me get any sort of movie to play in Suse 10.1 I can't get an AVI, Mpeg, Quicktime, or even a DVD to go without some software. Can anybody help me on this? I don't know how to install anything, and whenever I try I get stuck in dependency hell.
